quick random thought time:

was looking at diagram of the vg30e and figured out what helps make more power when the engine is cold... the air regulator is open letting more air than would otherwise be allowed through the fully open throttle body perhaps causing a slightly lean condition, therefore creating a hotter spark, also helping the engine warm up quicker...

i know most of you knew that already, just not sure about the how it did it:p

huh? the air regulator is after the TB, yes?

the Z32's air regulator is right before the AAC valve on the back of the motor, running off of a hose that comes from the back of the plenum and back through the side.

yeah the air regulator sits on the upper plenum... along with all the other stuff, of which most is useless:p

so how does this control how much air goes into your TB's?

DeleriousZ
12-07-2005, 07:52 PM
uh, this is all past the tb's... it controls the amount of extra airflow into the plenum at all times (even when the tb is closed) to allow for a higher idle when the car is cold... as the car warms up it heats up a bimetal heater expands and closes the rotary shutter cutting off the extra airflow and returning the idle to normal...

ok...i know all this. but lets take a look at what you said...

"the air regulator is open letting more air than would otherwise be allowed through the fully open throttle body"

you made it sounds like the air regulator how much air can be interered through the TB.

i dont get how something that sits behind the TB can control how much air can be entered trhough the TB.

DeleriousZ

"the air regulator is open letting more air than would otherwise be allowed through the fully open throttle body"

throttle body= fully open, air regulator closed=same amount of air being taken into the engine, air regulator open= more air being taken into the engine..

everyone else understood that yes?

DeleriousZ

"the air regulator is open letting more air than would otherwise be allowed through the fully open throttle body"

when throttle body= fully open and air regulator= closed, x amount of air being taken into the engine. air regulator= open: x + more air being taken into the engine..

everyone else understood that yes?

like i said...YOU made it sound like that because of the air regulator, more air can enter the TB. your explaining sucks!

i know what an air regulator does...i was just making you clarify it better.

i am actually quite confused now...and i dont think you are right.

i dont really have the urge to go to a strip club. why pay a lot of money to watch a girl strip and not get anything out of it and she wont even be there the next day when i have a girlfriend that i can watch strip, i will get some from her, and she will be there the next day. but i might go to one just to say i have been to one.

no, i made it sound like the car was able to suck in MORE air when the air regulator is OPEN than when the air regulator is CLOSED. when the car is COLD the air regulator is OPEN therefore allowing air to be sucked in from the intake tract BEFORE the throttle body THROUGH the air regulator and INTO the plenum. this creates a slightly LEANER situation (more air) when the car is cold and operating in closed loop. this creates a hotter spark, allowing the engine to warm up faster

now

as the car warms up, it heats up the bimetal spring and slowly spins the rotary shutter CLOSED therefore CUTTING OFF the excess airflow to the engine. this then returns the idle to its normal position.

on the z31 anyway.... is that clear enough?

k3smostwanted
12-07-2005, 08:52 PM
how old are you?!?!
19...why? i am getting up there...i know. :D

DZ: i see what your saying but i really dont think the Air regulator has the ability to block air into the plenum. i dont see how its possible...

on the Z32 the air regulator is located on the back driver's side of the plenum...a hose leads from the plenum into the regulator, then there is a hose going from the regulator into the AAC valve, and the from the AAC valve back into the plenum.

the AAC valve doesnt need to be active when the car is cold...therefore nissan lined this up behind the regulator. when cold, the regulator is SHUT, increasing pressure in the plenum, effectively forcing more air into the engine...increasing your idle.

once the car is warm the regulator opens relieving this pressure and circulating it through the AAC valve.

this is how the Z32 works and i was doubtful that the Z31 works any different. but you seem to be very presistent that the Z31 has a totally different inferior (:D) setup.

so we will leave it like this...

BTW: if you click this link...you can clearly see how the Z32's AAC valve and Air regulator system is lined up.

26, i'll be 27 in two months.

last year, on my birthday, i woke up with a 2 3/4 inch hair coming out of my eyebrow that i swore wasn't there the night before.
can't wait to see what odd things my old carcass will do this year, ear hair maybe?
atleast i still have all the hair on top of my head, my step-brother started going bald in his early twenties,
he will be thirty this year and is completely bald on top. thank god i don't share those genes.

not just any pipes and mufflers...titanium pipes and mufflers. makes the difference. i expected it to be alot more expensive than that...

BTW: single exhaust on a Z32 is retarded and worthless. people want true dual exhaust...you have to and want to go single.

yeah man, even if the single exhaust flowed 15hp better on a z32 i'd still shun it to death because it looks ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE coming out the back of it... just not right! it'd be interesting to see if you got into some ground clearance issues with the pipe being 3.5" or bigger... just doesn't seem like that 3" pipe would cut it you know... maybe if it was converted to a single turbo or something... still, looks like ass

Huh? I coulda swore I just saw a recent vid of Kuah's run and he still had the single....

I'm not dissing on Dual set-ups. It's tried and true and exactly what NISSAN had in mind when they designed the Z32. I heard some theories that the single works better for mid-range HP (think track-course). Who knows. I just wish someone would do some comparative dyno's already!

I HIGHLY doubt these were designed with looks in mind... function over form in this case. It just has to be proven on this side of the pond. On this side we are obssesed with peak HP and ignore the rest of the HP range below that. I really think the Japanese are onto something.
