Nope...if by "upper plenum" you mean the part that has the "Nissan 3000" on it, all you'd need is to remove all the stuff attahed to it (not hard), a screwdriver to take the screws out to get the "Nissan 3000" panel off and an allen wrench to get the screws out to get it off. It's not hard. What you want that off for?

Good luck cleaning it out...unless you have some resources involving machining and welding or "mad skillz, yo", it'll be tough. Good luck, though. Have you ever seen an Engloid (http://mywebpages.comcast.net/engloid/vg30tips/vg30tips.html) plenum? Pretty good stuff. Pretty expensive, too. Plus, I don't think he's making them any more. He has lots of good info on his site...just...BE WARNED...clicking the "home" button on the top of the link above will lead in you being directed to a pic of a VERY disturbing dude...like...ripping his ass hole open or something...why? I have no idea. But there is lots of good info on that site. Plus, he makes KILLER plenums for the VG!

No...I wasn't referring to the cover plate, I was referring to the upper plenum. It's NOT the intake manifold. The VG30E(T) has an upper plenum, the thing that has the "Nissan 3000" cover plate attached to it, and a lower plenum that feeds the cylinders. All it takes to get the cover plate off is a philip's screw driver...all it takes to get the upper plenum off (or simply "plenum", if you will...don't know if the bottom runners could technically be referred to as a "plenum" or not) is an allen wrench. To get the lower intake runner plenum off, all it takes is a screw driver. I also had to employ my rubber mallet to smack the shit out of it a few times to knock it loose. Taking the top off the VG down to the valve covers is easy.

yeah removing the plenum would have been like 500x easier if the pits where the bolts are housed weren't FILLED WITH ICE.... the '3000 turbo' plate had been removed sometime prior and with all the snow, it must have melted, pooled and froze in the cracks... making me one unhappy camper sitting there with a screwdriver chipping away the ice.. and then of course the heads of the nuts were frozen solid so i had to sit there with my needlenose pliers trying to carefully chip away the ice while not f'ing up the head...

anyway, cutting it out won't be THAT tough, it's just soft cast aluminum, so once i get the top off of it it'll just be hacking and slashing with a dremmel tool... going to make it look as much like this (http://www.lpperformance.com/images/Z31%20plenum/Perfor2.jpg) as possible... looks like a pretty simple design... the hardest part will be getting someone to weld up the top on it and welding the various ports that won't be needed on it (egr, pcv) closed.. check out here (http://www.lpperformance.com/Performance%20Parts.htm) for the full details of that plenum... pretty cool design, probably one of the cheaper ones out there too.... the velocity stacks on it are sweet :D

Cut out the middle man. Put the TB in the hose some how. Only problem with this is that the TB, unless it's GARGANTUAN, would be a big bottleneck in the path of air flow.

well LLZ i've been throwing around a few design idea's in my head when it comes to the upper plenum.. all of them are excessively complicated and probably would hurt more than help.. there's ones as easy as just hogging out the stock plenum, to completely redesigning the entire plenum setup with my own thoughts... a few that i have floating around already wouldn't work very well as they probably wouldn't allow the equal amounts of air to flow to every cylinder... i'm not sure i don't know enough about airflow to really go ahead with anything... that and i don't have the resources to carry out any of my ideas anyway... it's just fun to think about it:p

the purpose of the plenum is to help distribute the air evenly among the cylinders. you must have some sort of design to divide the air or some how deflect the air in certain patterns...

i have seen the Z31 upper plenum and it isnt a good design because it is restrictive it seems to me. but i bet the air is dispersed pretty damn evenly among the cylinders. just an idea...

As far as the plenum goes, I don't know why ANY of the designs I've seen so far are being used. If you want even flow, you'd need to divert the air in from one side...not from the front or the back...going from the front or the back, I would think, would make which ever cylinder was closest get more air cuz it had first dibs. This is why I don't think dispersion is ALL that big of a deal...espeically when you're ramming in 15 or so pounds of boost...I'd think there would be plenty of air to go around.

romulator is no good... requires the use of a bulky ass laptop.. hybrid88 (whose intake that is) is running the sds system with some pretty impressive results, or so it sounds.. making enough power to spin a bearing anyway.. negates the use of any of the stock sensors (for idle control anyway) so you can have a completely smooth plenum like he does there....

anyway the design i was throwing around was somehow creating an equalish length piping system that came almost directly off of the throttle body (sort of the reverse of what you see on the 'collectors' for the big v8's exhausts where the 4 pipes merge into 1) but the only problem is, i don't really have any idea if there would be any sufficient gains (would flow much better, but the singular pipes might act as really long intake runners) and if there is some sort of collector required to equalize everything... i dunno it's really hard to describe and like i said before, i really have no clue what i'm doing, i'm just throwing around ideas that aren't backed up with fact in any real sort... it'd just be nice to have a tech or engineer with an open mind to throw the ideas around with..

just coming up with designs for really gnarly intake mani's would be sweet... the only stanag would be finding a good mounting spot for the fuel injectors/rails so the stock or upgraded ones could be used for ease of installation.. i dunno i'm all over the place right now, i just wish there was somewhere i could go on the net to learn about all of this stuff...

Ok...back to reality...D...I had that same type of idea. Kinda like getting a exhaust manifold from an I6 and putting it on the other side. Instead of having each cylinder feeding into one collector and going to the exhaust, have the TB put on the end of the collector and splitting into seperate tubes for each cylinder. The way I see it is, well...if using an exhaust manifold of that type is beneficial on the exhaust side, it could help on the intake side, right?

When it comes time, I'm going to enlist the help of my mechanic, uncle and anyone else I need to to help with this stuff. The intake, the I/C piping and turbo layout, all that shit...

The romulator is the shit. You don't HAVE to have a computer...I'm 90% sure you can use a palm pilot, too if you use the right software. Still though...who cares? You gotta put a laptop in your car to tune it, but the flexability and usefulness of it is ENDLESS! Plus, this is one of the CHEAPER OPTIONS, if I'm not mistaken. Endless opportunity for tweaking AND on a better budget (I think)...how can you lose?

lol...one of the funniest things I've ever seen on Cops. Cops pull this dude over after a little mini-chase. Not a felony stop (where they take dude out at gunpoint and all that) but they are going to arrest dude for not stopping. Dude's a biiiiiiiiig dude...about 350lbs...easily twice the size of either of the cops there...bigger than them both combined, probably. He's getting all cranky saying the world hates him and all and starts acting like he wants to fight. So they taze him. He becomes reaaaaaaaaaaaaaal cooperative reaaaaaaaaaaaaaal quick. After being hand cuffed and all, all he can say is "damn, that really hurts"...lol. That's just classic. "I've been shot, stabbed, punched in the eye, nose, jaw...and that beats them all...that really hurts." Can't help but laugh at that...it's like...well NO FUCKING SHIT!!!

Fugu actually always has at least a small amount of poison regardless who prepares it. Actually people eat small slices of the fugu's liver which is one of the most poisonus parts. Eating fugu gives you a slight euphoria and most people have told me they can't describe how it tastes... that you just have to eat it. Always wanted to try it. Fun little fact; about a 100 people a year die of eating fugu in Japan! :p
