Has to be aftermarket cuz the factory one doesn't do anything (to the best of my knowledge) about the battery being disconnected.

Speaking of post whores...lol...j/k

I like that dude's set up. I'd like to ask him why he went with an intake manifold design like that. Is he sure it's even better than stock? If he is, how so? Bigger isn't always better...

DeleriousZ
09-01-2005, 08:11 PM
way better flowing i'd guess... more equal pressure across all cylinders once air fills the manifold.. interesting that it's just an open tank.. but you never knwo, i guess we'll see once he gets his running... i was thinking of a bit more radical designs at work today, but it would take some mad fabrication and might require a custom hood which i'd rather not have to do... what i would like to do is move the turbo up closer to the front of the engine like he did.. might make piping a bit more interesting, but it definitely allows the wastegate to flow all 6 pulses of the exhaust which is definitely a plus.. i dunno about that bracing method.. looks kind of sketchy to me but whatever, if it works it works

k3smostwanted
09-01-2005, 09:15 PM
freak: you cant catch up by post-whoring. now stop it!!!

delerious: you need to go ahead and start fabrication on a new intake manifold. im tired of you talking about it...lets see it. you have a spare 300zx that you can experiment on.

longlivetheZ
09-01-2005, 09:36 PM
And I have even BETTER...a spare 300ZX TURBO engine I can play with...and I will. Just gotta get cash flowing again. Remember, I wasn't working for 2 months and some change...gimme a break...gimme some time...

DeleriousZ
09-01-2005, 10:02 PM
it's not spare if i have to drive it in a few months... once the 88 comes off the road i'll have all the time in the world (well, until winter ends and i want her back on the road lol) to experiment with things.. i've been thinking of everything from the 'surge tank' idea to splitting the intake in 2 after the tb and having 2 seperate sets of 3 pipes feeding the lower plenum... somewhat like the z32, only more compact (limited to the space above the engine.. maybe a little wider than the stock one.. who knows, they're just all ideas.. i'd rather do the tank because it will take a LOT less fabrication and headaches.

speaking of time llz, i still haven't gotten around to the mailbox yet... i just need a strong kick in the ass to get off of it and do something these days lol

freakonaleash1187

freakonaleash1187
09-02-2005, 02:49 PM
nevermind, the tire shop i took it to only charged me $12/tired. and come to find out, i had a little wooden spike logded into my other rear tire, but it was holding air, weird.

longlivetheZ
09-02-2005, 04:11 PM
You could have bought a patch kit and done it yourself for...like...89 cents or something. It works. Just an idea.

It's all good, D...whenever you get to the post office...no bid deal. I'm gunna get the thing and mail it soon...going to my parent's house today and that's where it is.

I don't want to waste time experimenting with what works. I'm gunna talk to some pros and find out what WILL work best and go from there. I can't wait to get going on it again. I gotta get you guys some pics, too.

Just called the speed shop my mechanic recommended to me to get some prices. Here's what I got:

75 honing
85 hot tanking - gets all the old oil and sludge and whatnot out of all the guides and everything.
90 bore
200 balance - a MUST...
350 3-angle valve job - if I leave the cams in.
58 milling valves - if necessary.

Estimated total...900 bucks. A basically NEW VG30ET block and heads for ~900 bucks. Not as bad as I thought it would be. After this, the refurbish would be pretty much done. After this comes the purchasing of new parts like cams and turbo and whatnot. Then, right before I start the reassembly (with all new gaskets and hoses), I might contact my mechanic and see about working out some designs for intake and exhaust manifolds.

freakonaleash1187
09-02-2005, 07:22 PM
that sounds like a sweet deal. glad you are getting everything together. and about buying the patch kit, i dont have anyway to get the tire off the wheel, so that wouldnt work that well.

Dude...what the fuck is that?

I think that I'm going to buy a street-legal dirt bike for the winter. Either that or a truck or someshit that I can destroy and not care. I bought a nice car last year and it still makes me want to weep like a little bitch when I think about the outcome of that. I think it's time for the yearly "What should I get for the winter?" poll...

What I'm gunna do with the engine is this...gunna take the heads off and the cams out. Then I can take them the block and get the work done on that. Then I can save up more money and take them the heads and get them done. I was going to take them the engine as it stands right now, heads on block, but it's more expensive like that and I'd have to pay for all of it at once. I bought a breaker bar and a hammer yesterday. Went the cheap route. Went to the Home Depot and bought a 2' piece of black pipe for the breaker bar and got a 5 dollar rubber mallet...total cost = ~6 bucks...lol...it'll work. Gunna work on it this weekend. I have a 3 DAY WEEKEND this week...have I ever mentioned I love my job? I work in a restaurant. If you work in a restaurant, you KNOW you're gunna have to work crazy hours and all days of the week cuz most restaurants are open 7 days a week. BUT...my place...only open 8am-4pm mon-saturday! It's the SHIT! I work 7-3, mon-fri! It's amazing for a restaurant. And it's easy. I just wish it paid better. When I worked at Ryan's (the last place I worked at), I was a manager (like I am now) and made 32,000/year plus overtime and bonuses...lol. Not bad for a 21 year old (thank you, degree...lol). Taking $550+ to the bank every week wasn't odd. And it was salary so it didn't vary TOO much. Now I make 11 bucks an hour. My last check was 330 something for a week. Still ok, but not great. It's a start. And if you think about it, I'm actually making WAY more now...and it's easier. If you broke my pay down hourly at Ryan's, it was MISERABLE cuz I worked so many hours. In reality, I make twice as much now...just don't take home as much. Oh well. I hope to get the block work done in a few weeks and the head work done shortly there after. Then comes the reassembly process using new parts...THAT'S when I'll REALLY start spending money. Up to now, it's all been free...all I did was took it apart. Now I gotta spend a bit of money on machining...not too bad...THEN I get to spend some REAL money on cams and turbos (and lower compression pistons...j/k, K3...lol) and all that shit. Then it gets put back together...THAT'LL be an adventure...I have bolts and nuts scattered EVERYWHERE. I'll figure it out. What I wonder is if there's a way to get a whole set of new bolts and nuts and washers and all that for the thing. Most of the ones I took off were NOT in very good shape (corroded, rusted, stripped, whatever). I know I can get a gasket kit and hose kit, and I will...but I don't know about nuts and bolts...that'd be GREAT...especially if they were all labeled as to what they go to...lol.

DeleriousZ
09-03-2005, 07:01 PM
yeah i've been doing a bit of reading on them.. sounds like they're good to around 300 awkw or 400 awhp... after that they prettymuch max out... but that should get the car running extremely fast as it's so light... i dunno, i've still got a lot of decisions to make ahead of me...

Never seen one of those in my life...what the HELL is it? I know it's a nissan and it's a GTI-R. SPECS, MAN...What IS it? I think it looks cool as fuck. Looks kinda like the Civic hatchbacks of the mid-late 90s (I think)...the rounder ones, but a bit bigger. I like it. PLUS...it's apparently AWD instead of FWD...usually, small cars like that are FWD and I HATE FWD.

And...went to work on the engine today. What a disaster...broke a wrench (craftsmen...sheared the little nipple the socket attaches to clean off!), spilled a good 2 quarts of oil ALL over my storage space and had NO way to clean it up (turned the engine over a bit cuz I was going to take the oil pan off and oil started spilling out of...somewhere...dunno where...thought the thing was empty...) and I got NOTHING done. STILL can't get the crank pully off...even using the biggest wrench I have and a friggen hammer. Couldn't get the crank pullies off, either. I could deal with that. I can bring the heads to the speed shop with the pullies on...that's no big deal...but I can't get the heads off at ALL without getting the crank pully off. Open to suggestions...

tried a pulley puller?

you need something that pulles out on the pulley while you push in on the shaft that the pulley sits on.

you could probably make something that would be real effective with some long bolts and some thick metal.

delerious: i would just rebuild your car...think abotu it this way. how much will that GTi-R cost? how much do you pay in gas money a year? compare these 2 numbers and im sure you will see...that buying the Gti-R will not benefit you for a few years when it comes to saving gas money. this is waht keeps me from buying a bike...a bike i want will cost me around $5000. i spend about $1500 on ga s a year...so i can spend my same $1500 or spend $5000 on a bike and then maybe $1200 on gas. simple logic...its what i do best. :D

DeleriousZ
09-03-2005, 10:11 PM
a gtir will probably cost me 9k clean and clear, it it will not only be way better on gas, but i can actually haul things in it.. go skiing with it, put a large subwoofer in it:D and when i've got all that stuff out of it i can embarrass v8's to no end.. more later dinner now

I just found out a little bit about what is different between the GTi-R's SR20det and the 'regular' SR20det.

The most publicised improvements is the valvetrain design. Instead of standard hydralic lifters you get solid post lifters. This allows you to revs higher for longer with less risk of bounce or losing arms. It also uses different rod bearings. They are 19mm instead of the standard 17mm. The extra surface area is better at coping with greater cylinder pressure.

Oh yeah... and the quad throttle bodies.... :naughty:
