long live the z,
what i do to keep my insurance down is list my 89 toyota pickup as my primary vehicle and insure the fast car as a secondary "pleasure" vehicle.

it works, but from the sound of it this might not be a workable solution for you.

could be...but there alot of wheels on the market that resemble your old Gewalts.

and LLZ, how much are we talking for insurance? i wouldnt think insurance would be that expensive beings it is an older car eventhough it is a newer Z31. i got quoted $40 a month for liability on my Z31 but i pay about $250 a month w/ a $500 deductible for full coverage on my grand prix GTP and $175w/ a $250 deductible a month for full coverage on my Z32.

I'll let you know if the wheels are the same, Freak. I'm going to try to go see it sat.

As far as insurance goes, it makes NO SENSE to me...at all. Never has. Probably never will. It's all statistical bull shit, so if you're NOT like the majority, you're fucked. I'm NOT your stereo-typical, lead foot, disrespectful, moron, ass hole, 22 year old when it comes to driving. Therefore, I'm fucked. YAY...not.

I was poking around online last night and I got all DIFFERENT kinds of quotes...

88 NA 5 speed, min coverage for now and an 89 (as a pleasure vehicle) turbo 5 speed with the full coverage that the people selling it would require...here's a few of what I found...

Nationwide: Gave me a range of prices. "With discounts" range was...like...180-200 a month or something like that. "Without discounts" (which is the one I used...used a middle ground number from this range just to used the "worst case scenario") range came out to ~220/month. I can live with this. But I'd love under 200, which I don't think is completely unreasonable. I haven't had a ticket in...like...4 years and I've only ever had one accident my whole life. I'd deal with 220, though.

Now...Progressive was...like...500/mo or something like that...

Allstate was...HA...get this...it makes me laugh just thinking about it...over 700 per month!!! That was just funny...

State Farm wouldn't even give me a quote...

I hate insurance.

totally with you on the i hate insurance part.

why do the people selling it require full coverage?
i've only heard of full coverage being required for financed vehicles (new cars)

longlivetheZ
10-11-2005, 07:06 PM
Cuz I AM "financing" it. I put it in quotes cuz I'm not financing it in the traditional sense...the dealer is holding the title. My credit blows nut so this is really the only option for me. This is also what I did with my current Z31. Worked great for me. I was amazed that the guys with the 89 agreed to this, actually. It's not easy to find an 89 Z31...especially a turbo 5 speed...even MORE especially an 89 turbo 5 speed in good shape (assuming it's as nice as I'm thinking it is)...plus, pile on top of that the fact that it's pretty close to me (3 hrs...not around the corner but still doable) AND they'll hold the title...I will do just about anything I can to get this car under the given sercumstances (sp). PLUS, down the line, I'm going to be looking for a nice 87-89 Z31 to drop the VG30ET I'm building into. It's just too "perfect".

Oh...and...4500 is average for what the ho-hum whoever would pay for one of these cars if it was in good shape, anyway. I'm gunna offer him 3500 or 4000...hell why not...lol. It would more than likely go for more (I'd say probably up to 6000...maybe even a little more depending on how nice it is and how lucky you get when finding someone to buy it) to a Z31 enthusiast (I know I spelled that wrong). The 89s are the second rarest Z31s as far as overall production numbers go, plus they're (the 87-89s...turbos specifically) the best when it comes to the brakes, the factory clutch LSD, the additional 5 horsepower from the factory, the stouter transmissions, etc...

wow...im with progressive. i am gonna get a quote from Nationwide immediately. if they are half as much for you, maybe they can be half as much for me. :D

as for insurance on financed vehicles...yes. anything that has a loan or isnt paid off must have full coverage no matter what the year or anything. sometimes you can get away with it but 9 times out of 10 it will catch up to you. im not sure how they do it but they find out...i think the bank contacts or views your insurance coverage every so often to make sure that they will get their money if you destroy your car.

llz that is absolutely insane how much they're wanting to charge you for a near 17 year old car... makes me glad i'm only paying 150 a month... mind you that's not even close to full coverage... i'd probably be up around 250 a month with full...

yeah, i paid 4100 for mine (canadian) and it was a decent deal... it's got pretty high mileage on it, but the timing belt was done like 15k before.. the interior's not in the greatest of condition.. as you can see.. but the body's in pretty good shape... if it's a good as llz thinks it is, it will definitely be worth it (love red on the z31's... almost as much as black)

oh, and i thought the brakes were upgraded in 88, not 87?

Worth a try, man...check em out.

I know that. It sucks. It's the worst part about not paying cash for a car. Honestly, if it wasn't for insurance, I could EASILY drive just about what ever I wanted to. For instance...350Z...could be had for 500/month or whatever...which is kinda a lot (cuz my credit is horrible so they jack up the interest...), but I could pay it...what would kill me is the ins. The ins would be as much as the car payment...probably more.

I'm going to look at the car saturday...it's just a couple miles from fort wayne, IN, come to find out. Few hr drive. It'll be fun......and so worth it...hopefully. I'm gunna talk to the dude about workin on me with the ins...it's not even gunna get driven but 1 day a week...if that...it's just for fun. It's mostly gunna be parked at my parent's house where it will be safe, under a car cover. It'll be my "weekend fun car", if I even drive it that often...probably won't. The dealer I bought the 88 I have now from didn't even MENTION insurance...at all...oddly enough. I'll let you guys know what's goin on.

there is everything wrong with the celicas in the US. we dont get the cool stuff like you do.

My beater ass eighty-something Celica GT-s with a 5-speed was actually pretty fun...especially for a little 4 banger with FWD. One of the coolest things about it was the 7000+ RPM rev limit. I don't like the newer ones at all. The BEST thing about THAT car was that it was old and a bit beat up (wood and duct tape were parts of the body work...) so you could do pretty much whatever the hell you wanted to to it.

Oh...and we did get all-tracs here but only for 2 or 3 years...don't remember exactly. They're quite rare. My Uncle (the Car Pimp that works for Toyota) has one taken apart in his garage right now. He's modding it. It'll be a fucking blast when it's running again.
