entertain me for a moment please & answer this question...

would you consider a b series swap a "drop in" swap in a 4th gen or 5th gen?

serious answers please. I have reason.

CivicSpoon
03-03-2012, 02:07 PM
For an EX or Si 5th Gen, swapping in an OBD1 B16A, yes.
For a DX or LX (and Cali version CX [4-wire O2 sensor]) 5th Gen, swapping in an OBD1 B18B, yes.

Those specifically, because there's no wiring to add, or modifications that need to be done. With the exception of swapping the ECU & the shiftlinkage (really just pulling out the entire shiftlinkage instead of simply unhooking it from the transmission with the bitch pin), it's no more work that removing the stock engine/transmission and then reinstalling it.

Beyond that, as long as there's an OBD1 ECU being used, and it's at least an OBD1 engine, the other 5th Gen swaps are just wiring differences that need to be changed or added. So I wouldn't exactly call them straight "drop in" swaps, but I may just be being technical. Personally if I was doing a swap for someone, I'd charge a little bit more, for having to deal with the wiring (not more than $50). Depending on the circumstances of course.

Tony
03-03-2012, 11:38 PM
I'm kind of with CivicSpoon, if it doesn't require wiring changes its a drop in. IMO even if it requires a mount kit and no major wiring changes like MPFI, its a drop in.

Tony

BTW where are these legs you promised us?

Tony
03-03-2012, 11:46 PM
Oh and I got the old Rx7 killing mosquitoes today! Its not running right, has an exhaust leak, possible clog cat, leaking heater core, no dash and after 5 mins of idling no gas, but damn it it ran on its own for 5 minutes! Which is more than its done in awhile from what I have been told from the previous owner.

what about the 4th gen?

i ask the question because this guy kept trying to tell me its a drop in for a b series into a 4th gen :screwy: I called the swap into a 5th gen a drop in & he tryng to say it's a drop in into an "ef".....finally I said "ef" is in japan, we got "ed" here in america & unles you have actual "ef" shells laying around in your backyard.....

i hate to say it but i think i, gulp, appreciate talking cars with you guys... :screwy:

CivicSpoon
03-04-2012, 12:48 PM
I honestly haven't dealt with 4th gens that much, so I've never done a b-series swap in one before. But from my previous "research", don't you have to bash in the frame, for the alternator to even fit in? As well as change the throttle cable? And then HAVE to add a bunch of wires (not to mention possibly dpfi to mpfi conversion depending on the trim)? Hammering the frame is enough for me to say that it's not a drop in swap (assuming you do in fact have to do that to get it in).

CivicSpoon
03-04-2012, 12:53 PM
i hate to say it but i think i, gulp, appreciate talking cars with you guys... :screwy:
:crying: ah...that's so sweet :p

But wait...didn't you break the rule of no car talk in the OT thread? :nono:

amy@af
03-04-2012, 02:12 PM
who says there's a no car talk rule?!? :screwy: we always talk car :icon16:

it requires *mounts, axles, linkage, and the other things you mention. To me the mounts is the key to is not a "drop in"....well, I suppose without out the mounts you'll literally be dropping it in straight through to the floor :grinno:

Tony
03-04-2012, 05:40 PM
I don't consider the mounts ruling it out of drop in, its something that takes 5 mins to throw on while its out, same with axles and the linkage, you have to mess with those dropping in a D as well, not change but you still have to deal with them. You do have to make room for the alternator and I think the factory crank pulley as well so it puts it on the edge. I don't think I changed the linkage on mine but hell its been so long ago. No wire changes needed if its OBD0 and the ED was MPFI to begin with.

amy@af
03-04-2012, 06:56 PM
meh, you missed the point. Which at this point I don't think I care. The dumb ass guy came back days later making a lame shot at me and the girl in charge of this "girl only" group doesn't seem to car her boy is giving out wrong info...I'm supposed to turn the other cheek. I'm sorry, I'm not going to be insulted by a guy giving out wrong info & then keep my mouth shut after he insults me days later. I let it go...he obviously didn't.

I will gladly leave. They can keep their retard who doesn't know a swap from his penis....I know I've been wrenching longer than he's had a drivers license :bloated:

Tony
03-04-2012, 08:17 PM
You know kids know everything! IMO it all depends how much extra work is involved that you wouldn't be doing with any other swap. Which if you really get down to it, if you have to change transmissions its not a drop in, which goes against everything I have mentioned previously lol.

Shenanigans!

amy@af
03-04-2012, 09:44 PM
this is what got me...he says the b16 comes in the ef...so you can just drop it in an ef. RoTfLmAo....clearly he's just repeating what he reads & has zero comprehention for what he said.

yes the b16 is stock in the ef9 in Japan. There isn't an ef in america....nor will the ef9 mounts work in an ed civic. But Mr. Know-it-all is sure the b16 is a drop in.....IDIOT. That's just at the mounts. It's hard to find the corect ecu anymore & it's just plain easier to run obd1. Again, having to not only upgrade to obd1 but in most cases also upgrade from dpfi to mpfi.

cool, keep your leg humper with bad info & chase off the girl who has 10+yrs knuckle busting...I will gladly walk away from that reasoning!!!

So...um. If anyone out there has a wireless router, make sure to have a secure password and change it often. Got a letter from our ISP (Verizon) yesterday, saying some company sent them a subpoena to get out personal info (name, address, phone number, etc), because of some alleged illegal downloading of copyrighted material; via Bit Torrent. Of course it couldn't be just some regular Hollywood movie or major label music; nope. Ohhhhh no, it's for a different kind of copyrighted movie; the hardcore type (not illegal hardcore but hardcore enough). From the discussion I've read online it's all over a 10 minute video.

I live in a typical suburb, where the houses are 10-20 feet apart, so we're not sure who it was. Maybe the hacker wannabe kid next door who leaves his house 5 times a year, maybe the 50 something year old who moved in with his disabled mother a year or so ago, maybe the weird guy in back, or maybe any of the other teenage to 30 something year olds near us.

But now the shit storm starts. Apparently the case has been going on for almost a year now without our knowledge, with 564 other anonymous people involved. So we have to get an attorney to try and convince the judge not to give this company our information ("motion to quash"), and unfortunately the judge of the case has been tossing out such motions left and right.

From my research, the whole thing is a legal scam of sorts anyways. The main attorney is a divorce lawyer, who decided to get involved with the porn industry, for alleged copyright violations. He picked porn, because of the stigma and embarrassment attached to it (I'll get to that in a second). He's so slimy, that he's had most of his copyright cases thrown out all over the country, and now claims to have "retired", but instead has partnered up with other attorneys across the country. They send subpoenas to mass amounts of people, upwards of over 1500 each. They file the subpoenas in major states where not many people involved are from, so it makes it harder for them to defend themselves in court. For example, the lead attorney is from Illinois, but the case was filed in DC. So to ultimately defend ourselves against out info being released, we might have to get a lawyer in the DC area; ridiculous.

Then there's the "greatest" part of their scheme. They've received some names from previous subpoenas. They've only started litigation of a dozen or less people, in cases that include THOUSANDS. But not a single one has actually gone to court, after a year or more from the lawsuit being filed. Instead, they post the alleged pornography copyright infringer's names on their web site, to embarrass them publicly. So the reality is, they are using public embarrassment to convince these people (eventually me & my family) to settle out of court, for a lesser amount (apparently $1900-3900), rather than having their name posted on a site claiming they are illegal porn downloaders. Even more disgusting, the main "former attorney" is even joining in on internet discussions of his bullshit cases, and trolling about how they are going to get people. Even more, MORE, disgusting, some 70 year old grandmother was one of the people "caught" in this disgrace of the "justice" system, simply because she didn't secure her router.

tl;dr - Secure your wireless router and change your password regularly, and/or apparently don't download pornography via Bit Torrent; if you actually do (who the F*** downloads full porn.videos???)

Welcome to my own personal hell, that I call Life.

CivicSpoon
03-09-2012, 01:37 PM
lol I wish it was that simple. And it's only like 50 yards of people who must suffer my wrath. Thinking about changing the routers name to something like "FBI" to either give intelligent & innocent people a laugh, and possibly scare the dumb, young, & guilty into thinking they may be being watched. Or I could just rename it "Saxophone" like someone else in my neighborhood did.

I'm going to have to think about that one, even with the double dog dare (which makes it very VERY tempting). If I do, I'll certainly post a screenshot of it :)

Suspiciously, our router password was turned off recently. Though I did log on to the router a few months ago, and it was definitely on. Not sure if these 2 things are connected, or if they are, how.

Maybe it was Ali Rahman using my router to search for his father's long lost treasure :lol2: (Anyone get that joke?)

Some of them are getting smarter now. They are finding houses for sale or rent, copy the info from those ads, and post them with their own contact info on other sites. They ask for a $800-1,000 down payment for the first months rent, call back when they get it, and claim someone else is willing to pay them the first 3 months rent. At that point, it's too late, and they have their money.

My brother and sister-in-law had that happen to them a month or so ago (6 months or so after some Russians got their credit card info and social security number). They just had a baby a year ago, so they wanted something bigger than their little apartment. Crazy part is that someone was there to show them the house, and apparently did so by breaking in. Saw news reports a week later, about it happening all over NY.

The internet is officially the Devil

Man I always miss out when the action picks up around here, then when I come back the neighborhood is vacated like Craig's block when Debo is out.

Anyways eff the farmers and their assholish domination of our clocks! Also eff the power surge that knocked power from my apt bldg, setting all my clocks to flashing 12:00 overnight, causing me to be late for my train, leaving me a free half hour to post on AF and clear out the OT forum....again
