Yeah so yesterday (about those tornados lol), we had massive storms coming this way that looked potentially tornadic to me on the radar. So I decide to go out to my car (with massive amounts of lightning in the distance) to go hide in a parking garage at Purdue. I walk outside... big puddle under my car. Figured it was from the AC... but realized i hadn't driven my car in 24 hours. :uhoh: F@#$!!!! :crying: You guessed it, once again, big pile of coolant all over the place. Turned car on, insta-low coolant light. Turns out now I either have another massive gasket leak or my radiator or a hose exploded. LUCKILY my buddy came and picked me up because we were going to go work out... storms were nasty.

On the way to work out, tornado sirens go off. We have to park at one of the farthest freaking spots away from the building... we get out of the car and SPRINT to the workout building, I'm wearing sandals and going through massive puddles of water and soaking my feet in mud. Finally got inside right before the hail started...

Forced us into the basement for a while. After it was done we worked out and it was storming the rest of hte evening.

Long story short: Tornadoes came by, my car is dead, and if it's another gasket it's not going to be driving for at least several months. So I'll be buying a new car.

UUUGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH :crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::c rying:

new life is in my grand am.... took out the entire trunk... all carpet, left an 'essential' kit ... tire/bar/jack/jumper cables, all down in the storage... Seats are out completely, plastic panel is out... and both doors in the back are now out.. with child lock on lol

Its a small amount but noticeable... accelerates fairly good, can easily feel colder air at night just makes it wanna gooooo lol

Downer is... my rear speakers have no 'boom' cause of the open pressure to the cabin, and theres tons of road noise now. Why do our cars have an open vent like thing in the trunk?

xeroinfinity
06-07-2009, 07:36 PM
Yeah Vipey hope your troubles are something else besides the LI. I thought you had that replaced last year ??

I dont think we had any tornadoes but the winds were high and the hail was pounding my SE. I just took it out that day from its long winter overhaul. :(
Luckily it didnt look like a golf ball when it was over. I saw some pics of cars from the Lafeyette area that had broken windows, and major dents.

Yeah Gir those parts did block some road sounds, a little. Where is this vent youre talking about ?

Thats something Ive been looking at is droppin a couple hundred pounds from the SE.... maybe CF hood and fenders :dunno:

pull back the carpet matt stuff in the trunk and look in the passenger cornor... a determined rat or mouse could easily chew thru the brittle plastic lol...

oh yea, fixed my exhaust rattle noise for $10... bought new hangers, lifted it up, cut the old ones off and slipped on the new lol... good investment, it'll keep me SANE from now on while I drive lol.

I need to build me a couple sub boxes to fit behind my tire well area.... just big enough for a 10". I guess the weight reductions will just get added back then.

Performance rods, pistons & rings, crank and bearings are a definate! :evillol:

Under heavy cloud cover you wont get a signal. At least with UHF/VHF you could get a static picture when the weathers bad to know if the storms headin your way. Now you wont know?! :screwy:

And from what Ive heard you also need a HD antanna, and an amplifier if you live more then 30-40 miles from the broadcast towers.

Yay for getting a 6 point $126.50 ticket for crossing a road closed ahead sign (disregarding traffic control device) when my intention was to turn around and go back the way I came. And then of course letting traffic in front and behind of me go free. Apparently THEY didn't break the law, but I did somehow... when they went THROUGH and I merely TURNED AROUND. FUCKERS.

At least I had fun with paintballing, until I got back home and my GA dumped all its coolant again, and I have no coolant, and no way to go get coolant, and I'm stranded here thinking about this ridiculous ticket I shouldn't have to pay.

Oh and my parents/grandparents/uncles/aunts might lose the family business this week if the bank calls in their credit line, meaning my entire family is unemployed from a job that used to net six figures. Therefore we lose the house, and I either have to get my car fixed immediately with money I suddenly don't have or lease a car with my dad to cosign before he's labeled unemployed, and pay for THAT with money I don't have.

When will the shitstorm end?

Some judges in the area are pissed at all the challenges so if you lose they automatically fine you the maximum amount allowed (TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS), so I'm a bit terrified to try to fight it... because I could buy a used late 80's corvette for that money... heh.

Fuckers are going to get my money no matter what I do. :crying:

Good news is I THINK I fixed my coolant leak... for $8. Coolant resevoir cap's o-ring was so expanded from years of liquid on it, it was looser than a $1 whore on 50% off night. I'm not even kidding, I could slip it over almost any part of the cap... which explains why it would selectively spill all over the place when I refilled coolant, or sometimes it would be fine...

either way, we'll see if this was the fix or not... and I'll just PRAY it was!

With Ed McMahon passing away earlier in the week it kind of gives credence to the old theory that celebrities die in 3s doesn't it?

!
You heard wrong JC..A basic antennae is all you need. We have a guy in our local paper who writes a column on tech stuff and he recently had an article dispelling the myths. In fact there are videos on youtube that show you how to make your own digital antennaes cheap. In some cases, an amplifier will be needed if you live a certain distance or other factors come into play. But they can be purchased cheaply at Wal Mart or other stores. I went out and got an indoor/outdoor Philips antennae for about $38. I attached it with a clamp to my entertainment center and aimed it towards my local broadcasting towers. Perfect reception :grinyes: ( it came with an amplifier that you attach the antennae cable to and plug it into a outlet.) I did have an outdoor antennae in my attic which worked fine for the 20+ years it's been there but I couldn't get my ABC affiliate with it for some reason. With the new antennae, I get a whole bunch of newer stations, some 60 miles away. (I'll look for that article concerning the myths and send you the link if I find it.)

Yeah I heard this last week that the old anteniis worked though you do need an amplifier if you live way out from the broadcast locations. One thing I dont like about it is when the weathers crap my sttellite goes out and i heard so does the HD channels. I used to use my vfh for those time now its not even woth paying $10 for a hd box.

that's crazy 2 celebs in one day without it being some catastrophic event like a car crash. after i had heard ed passed, I said farrah was next, and my guess for third was going to be Patrick Swayze. MJ was a bit of a shocker and that fact that no one knew at first if it was true or not made it odd.

Well on side topic I'm considering on selling my 88 Grand Am. I've come to the realization that I probably won't get to restore it and fix it up like I want and in the end it's not going to be worth a lot even if I do, so I'm at the point of making that very very hard decision. I know my bro-in-law wants it, but honestly I'd rather part it out then sell it to him. He's part of the reason why the car needs half the work it does and yet he keeps coming back to me asking if I want to sell it to him. :screwy: If you guys have any thoughts on what i should price it at let me know. Nada has it listed at $1050 for poor condition. The car isn't running at this second but the last time i charged up the battery it started right up no problem and no CEL.

It was pretty ironic they both died, MJ was a total shock! I would expect Patrick Swayze...David Carradine hung in his closet...strange days they are. I do think MJ was addicted to pain killers, those will shorten your life when used on a regular basis. This will be remembered as the year the actors died.

On a brighter note, your 88 GA grfnkl, ask high so they the buyer has talk down room. Makes them think they're getting a deal. :D

Most shops over torq the lugs, thus warping your rotors.

Yours should be torqued to 100ft lbs Gir.

Fiber optic is great  Verizon installed FiOS in our area 3 years ago and I get the 20 mbps download and 5 mbps upload service. Sure beats the old 27kbps dialup service I had. I'm in a rural area and cable is too expensive to run out our way due to lack of houses, and satellite internet was very costly. ( I have Directv and I think they wanted something like $500 to $600 to install the service and monthly costs were about $70 to $80  ) I'm now waiting for them to start up their FiOS TV service, hopefully later this year. Everything, including the phone, internet and tv service will come in to the house through the fiber optic cable.

I have Dish I think for the wild blue its $40-50 a month plus a $100 for professional install, I might be able to void that and install it myself.
Wild blue directly would be close to $100 or more a month, just like the Hughsnet. HN costs a lot for the install, around $200 and they wont let you install it yourself. :crying:

About $60/mo. I think they have specials once in awhile. Installation was free, and the router was free too. I read where the equipment they give you for free costs over $1000. I have this good sized box, they installed in my basement that handles my phone and internet, and hopefully later this year FiOS TV.It also contains a battery backup good for about 2 hrs. in case of a power outage, you can still use your phone, one issue digital phone has since it goes dead during a power outage, unlike a landline.

If you don't mind me asking, where you live do they string the line on poles or bury it underground? In my area, it is generally strung up on telephone poles, but in some housing developments it is buried as there are no poles.I watched them back about 3 years ago when they brought the line down the road , installing it on the poles, quite a site. After they finished I had to wait about 3 months while they upgraded the switching station with the new equipment. My house is one of the farthest from our switching station and Verizon had told me it would've been useless to get DSL because of this as my speed would only be slightly higher than dialup, if that.

I had that during the free period and a little bit beyond,(They gave me more free time as there were so many issues with AOL and the then new Windows XP always clashing they felt sorry for me always calling their support :lol; ) Anyways, while I was with AOL, I was in their beta testing program and were one of the first to try out their new versions they were coming out with ( 8.0 then eventually 9.0 ) Whenever there was a new version to try out or a major update, I would have to download it, which could take up to a day to do because it was so large. I used to leave the computer on all night and hope the connection would stay and allow it to fully download. Even simple programs and updates took so long. God I do not miss those days.

and then people wonder what the flip happened to your phone.
Funny you should say that, everyone always says, "where were you?? I called and it just rang and rang ?"

That's not a bad price for that. Yeah I bet the system equipment is expessive for either fiberoptics-FO or the sattelite internet. I know those who work on FO make killer money, even out this way in the BFE. All FO in this area is burried or soon will be. The tubes it goes in have been in the ground since 1997. :shakehead:

maybe they're waiting for me to finish college so I can do it lol.. be in the hot sun, middle of farm land america laying down a thick ass heavy optic cable...

after the cable is laid down, they still gotta change out the routers and switches with faster new ones.... Technology is slowing coming lol

My exbrothernlaw works on FO only, on call 24/7/365, and is one of only 2-3 people who know how to connect and repair damaged FO within a 500-600 miles range of here, so he does do some driving. The job comes with all sorts of pirks, comp truck, free phones, laptop, etc etc.. He's a dick btw!

Yeah downloading large files on dialup sucks! I know even some XP updates take forever. Thing that realy sucks for me is my ISP resets their servers every 12hrs so you get booted offline. Thank god for download programs! Torrents a great too! I downloaded a 2 GB movie a while back, Tokyo Gore Police, it only took a week and a half.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Aol=aohell, I had a program that would keep me online until the file was downloaded and no errors. I had AOL, then I switched to Earthlink. Then finally got Comcast for internet and TV, dumped Comcast, and went to AT&T for DSL.

As long as you live anywhere in the US, you'll have underground cabling :D, if I'm not mistaken there are some stretching across the pacific and atlantic oceans, with also the use of satellites we communicate with the rest of the world lol

oh yea, its my birthday today :D

I live right in the middle of a triangle dead zone. It would realy suck to live in the upper midwest, no service for them!

I remember when I first got dialup I could have 4-5 windows open all loading at the same time and rather quickly. Now If I tried that none of them would probly load just get a "page no found" error. :(

Hey, Happy Bday Gir !!

Yeah, that part I knew, what I should have said was if the new cable they were installing was going underground, or on a pole. One would think with technology and resources available today the line would be installed underground as much as possible. This minimizes the chance that a storm could come along and take down the network, or sabotage, etc. The main excuse in my area that they still install the lines on the poles is that it's cheaper. I'd rather spend a little more money now and know that it's done than having to do it in the future. But it's weird how some sections in my area, the cable is buried, while in others it's strung up on the pole.
I read an article a few years back commenting on the fact that the US still relies on stringing cable up on poles whereas many third world countries have invested the time and money to bury their cable, which is generally considered to be better.
Another article I read about 20 years ago stated that the cables that stretch across the oceans have to be maintained constantly because of the fact that the continents are still moving and sometimes a cable is in danger of breaking due to this, and among other dangers outlines in this article I came across : http://www.popsci.com/scitech/article/2009-03/who-protects-intrnet
