There are salt mines in another part of the state where they 'harvest' salt to be used on the roads. :crying:
One of the first things I notice when arriving in a warmer climate is all the immaculate older cars.
My 99GT is rapidly showing signs of salt exposure.

I agree Wylie. My 99 GT has developed 2 rust spots on the body, one at the fuel door and one just behind the passenger wheel well at the seam between the rear bumper cover and body. I just had to replace a brake line that runs from the ABS assembly over to the passenger side front caliper, and my stabilizer bar is cracked on both ends. I'm waiting for a little warmer weather to deal with the stabilizer bar, as I intend on taking pictures to add to the replacement proceedure we have at tips and maintenance

I just welded mine.

Average life of brake and fuel lines here is about 5 years, slightly longer for gas tanks. It seems the average age of vehicles on our roads here is about 8 years, and I find myself turning my head when an "older" ( late '80s/early '90s) vehicles drives past. We go through a lot of door bottoms, and lower rocker panels, and sub frame parts.:frown:

Rust? Whats rust? :uhoh:.....
10 plus years here and our vehicles have very minimal rust and/or corrosion, if any. I'm glad. :grinyes:
You know the rust is bad when you try to jack up your vehicle and it falls down on the jack destroying the fuel and brake lines. Right Tim (tblake)?

That's harsh Bob! Funny, but harsh. You get more sandblasted hoods/grills/etc... as well as go through a lot more air filters down there I'm sure.

Not really Rich but the dust storms we get periodically are a PITA. My hood and front end is still original to include all paint. Add windshields but a lot of that is from rocks from 18 wheelers or some dump truck without a cover or just bad luck.
I definitely go through more filters. :grinyes:
BTW - A lot people from up North come down here to buy their used car. It freaks them out when they can't find any rust.

'85 Cavalier? I haven't seen one of those in ages. (Had to Google Images to remember what one looked like . Hey Rich, I say we send Bob a package of rust down to Texas just so he doesn't feel left out.
BTW, I'd rather replace filters than rusted out body panels.

Yeah, but with it comes drivers who dont know how to drive in such conditions.
I'd take your weather any day Bob, What kind of natural disasters do you have to look out for in Texas? We've pretty much just got the chance of tornado's in the midwest.
My next car I'll probably buy from down south and drive it home. Just so I dont have to deal with rust.

Hi Alex.
Not a problem. You are welcome here. We are not tribal in nature and welcome everybody. We used to be but that was a long time ago. Mainly with the Ford Mustang crowd. :twak:
Man, that is cold and in March? So much for the theory of global warming. My son is freezing his rear end off in New York but he will be going on Spring break next week for some relief.
 Why is it that the Mustang crowd has a bad rep among every single car crowd? Beh, a car is a car. Some like slow cars with good gas mileage, some like fast cars that break all the time, some like cars that charge you $50k for a badge, etc. Whatever you like is what you should be driving! Truth be told, I went to test drive a GTP once (I believe it was a 2000 or so) and liked it. The only downside was I found out after I drove it that it had a salvage titel. :( Honestly, if that were not the case I probably would be an owner of a GTP in here with you guys...and had thousands of dollars more in the bank! Seems like a very friendly crowd you guys have in here...very few and far between in this day and age. That's one of the reasons I like the 3/S section on AF, very friendly/open-minded people in there. Well, I figured I'd check in and see what was going on. Time to look at some of your threads and start learning! :D

Thanks for the compliments SL3000gt. We like to think we're pretty easy going over here. Our mod team (myself included) pride ourselves on keeping it light, but also on topic so threads are easy to follow. Bob (Bnaylor) and Lynn (GTP Dad) did a great job setting up the tips and maintenance sub forum. It helps limit the numbers of new threads on the same ol' same ol'. Although if we were uber competative on the highest thread count here on AF, we should remove it and we would probably be #1.

Haha, you ought to hit 3SI, there are some real post whores there. The sad thing is, along with a lot of AF, the 3/S section has died down some in the past year. There is me and some others who are regulars along with those who drop in now and then...but that is about it now. However, not a bad turnout for how few 3S's there are. That is one of the reasons I like to visit this section from time-to-time is because it regularly seems busy. Plus, any cars with F/I fascinate me! Maybe it is time to get rid of my SL and get a GTP for a DD so I have something with a bit more pickup as SL's tend to run mid 15's...low 15's if you can really drive...but that is about it stock. Who knows, maybe I'll throw on some twin turbos on the SL too and have a DD with no traction lol. Either way, good to be on here. I'll stop in here and there.

A lot of Japanese cars are no slouches. :grinno:
While we are on the subject of Japanese cars worth considering or buying what does everyone think of the new Acura TL? I haven't bought a new car since 2002. :uhoh:
The last performance Japanese car I owned was a '84 Nissan 300ZX Turbo with all the beeps and bells including t-top. 15 sec car back then and it would definitely do over 150 mph. :smokin:

I like the new TL, and even the commercials for it. You almost can't go wrong with Acura/Honda, their reliability is legendary and their interiors are well engineered. Their syling got kinda vanilla for a while, but they're coming around again. Honda's mess me up because the serpentine belt end of the engine is on the drivers side, which is backward to about every other carmaker out there. The 1st gen Dodge Intrepid/Eagle Premier/Chrysler Concorde family were odd also, FWD with longitudinal mounted engines.
VR43000GT

The serpentine belt on 3S's are also on the driver's side...and a can be a PITA to work on/change.

Nice pics Tim!!
Don't worry about changing the subject, that's why it's called "off topic" you knucklhead!
I agree that the G8 is sweet, I'd own one if I could afford it.
I still think of all the retro-rods coming out, Chrysler got the look right with the Challenger. You can tell it's a new car, but anyone who remembers the classic movie "Vanishing Point" from the 70's can instantly recognize the new Challenger as an updated version of the 70s vintage cars of the same name. The problem with buying one is Chrysler's questionable build quality. I deal with a few police fleets that have the Charger's and Magnums, and they have all sorts of fuel system, transmission and suspension issues.
The new GT, Cobra etc...versions of the new Mustangs are sharp, but the base cars are a little vanilla. That's what sets the Challenger apart, it doesn't need ground effects, spoilers, etc... to look bad ass!
I will reserve my opinion of the new Camaro until I actually see a production version. As always, GM is last to the party and the styling is ?!?!?! The side and rear of the car look good, but the front facia looks to angular "new Caddillac" to me.
Don't worry about changing the subject, that's why it's called "off topic" you knucklhead!
I agree that the G8 is sweet, I'd own one if I could afford it.

13mpg city on the G8 GXP?! Wow, that is truly terrible. Lol, the blown V8 Vette is getting better than that.
I agree, the new SRT-8 Challengers are pretty nice. I have seen a couple in person and they are definately not a retro flop.
And richtazz, here is nice little spy shot of the production Camaros getting ready to be sent out:

I've seen a few of the new Challengers but no SRT-8 with the Hemi so far. Brings back good old memories since I used to have a '70 Challenger R/T with a 440 Magnum engine back in the old days. :crying:
I still wouldn't consider getting one since it is a Chrysler product. Plus it looks like a PITA working on the engine like many of the Chrysler models out today. Try changing a serpentine drive belt in a Stratos or Avenger. :banghead:
The problem with the Aussie made G8/G8 GT/GXP is the parts situation. It could take months to get repair parts for it like when in an accident. The GTO was a dismal flop. Sorry to say it but I'm looking at Japanese for my next new car. :uhoh:

That's actually the best angle for the Camaro. It's the front end that I'm not that hip on. I guess they only come in Red, Yellow, Black and Silver huh.
I bet those jonesing for one are droolsville over that picture.

Don't be so quick to dismiss it soley based on the fact that it is a Chrysler. I have been top some GM and Chrysler dealerships in Omaha recently and it appears that both auto manufacturers may be turning a new leaf. I have seen the SRT-8 in person and it actually had a very nice interior, and what looked to be a smooth well-built body. Of course, this is not always the case if you know -TheStig- (one of the AF moderators). He bought his G8 GT and has had nothing but problems from his interior going to crap to mechanical defects that the dealership fights to take responsibility for. Truth be told Bob, that is actually one of the things that started to deter me from buying a GM (specifically the GTP and Camaro SS) when I was looking for a car. It was just sad to see a SS Camaro with the same interior as a Cavalier. :( If when I was looking for a car, GM or Chrysler would have had something that looked like it had a little more effort put into it, (and maybe had AWD to if that is not too much to ask for :D) I would have taken a more serious consideration.

Alex, the real test is a long term test and evaluation but in the end Chryslers normally do not fair that well not to mention the resale value versus GM and Ford. Even the retro Mustang looks cheap.
But there is no way I am going to pay well over $45K for a Challenger SRT-8. Of course there is the R/T model but that isn't much cheaper. The Acura TL is looking better and better to me. I don't need anything that will burn rubber like a fire breathing monster. That is what I have the GTP for.

I've always kinda liked the looks of the Tiberon, and the new RWD car they have is getting rave reviews, but I'm with Bob, I wouldn't own one.
That Red Mustang is the vanilla style I was talking about. The GTs/Shelbys, Cobras, etc... look better, but if a car needs all that cladding/ground efffects to look good, maybe the basic design is flawed. I like the looks of the Lexus G35 too.
I hate to say it as I've always owned GM products (I live in a GM town), but they don't offer a car that really interests me at the moment other than the G8 which I couldn't afford. If I decided to downsize the GP for something with better mileage and a manual trans (I love stick shifts), it would probably either be a Honda Civic or Mazda-3.

Yep, I'm on the naughty list. Bob warned me, one more bad remark and I'm gone.:nono:
GTP will be doing a lot better here soon Bob, I've got some parts on the way (delco ps hoses, Delco pump, Delco strut mounts, delco load bearings, LIM gaskets) Its a great car and to tell you the truth the best thing about it is ITS PAID OFF! I;d way rather be dropping a a few hundred now and then on it than making monthly payments.
Just pulling your leg Tim.
At least it gives you something to do and it beats taking it to a shop and any work you put into it is your accomplishment. I know what you mean by having a car paid off. When I made the last payments on my GTP and later on my Regal GS it was a great feeling. I could sleep peacefully at night plus all of a sudden my mod and beer budget went way up. Nice having a lien free title in your hands. :grinyes:

Ahh yes, the good old days! :icon16: Where a mod could pimp slap some dumb-ass, post whoring idiot resurrecting threads from 6 years ago. I remember a certain mod PM'ing me a few times when I was new keeping me on the straight and narrow. I won't mention his name, but his initials are BN,:thumbsup:. Obviously I didn't take it personally and go crying to my mommy, hold a grudge, leave AF, etc..., as that same mod is who nominated me to mod status. I think some of the old ways should have stayed, as it gets old trudging through a bunch of irrelevant crap from some noob or know-nothing typing in all caps, using incomprehensible English, and being a nuisance. But hey, it's not my website, so I try to follow the rules. I do believe the new AF is a little friendlier, but that may or may not be for the better. If it's just post counts they want, it seems we were busier when the Mods brandished their ban-sticks with abandon and kept the trash to a minimum. Just my :2cents:
The changes we've made here at Grand Prix, the tips and maintenance sub forums, this off topic thread, etc... have made our little corner of AF a prime example of the potential a good mod team and their supporting advisors can reach. My hats off to everyone involved here, as even if i say it myself, WE ROCK!!

Plus in the end it is our membership and the participation we get from them. We can only do so much but obviously we are doing better than other AF forums. :grinyes: Our tech stuff here is some of the best around even versus the other GP forums on the NET. We get people from Club Med after they get run off over there or fail to get good tech advice.

:grinyes:
Those are the two most important budgets one must manage too. :iceslolan
Quick question that is too short to require its own thread. How hard is it to turbo a GTP? I under stand obviously intake mani., complete new exhaust kit for turbo/s, some sort of e-manage, etc...but is it really that difficult to do as I have only seen a couple people online who have actually done it?

it really isnt "that hard" to do. places like ZZP and 3800 performance sell kits with everything you need. personally i'd stay with supercharged, especially with an automatic. however as i stated in another thread...i rode in a turbod 636 WHP grand prix daytona edition and it was pretty damn cool...

I agree Bob.
Didn't we have a video floating around AF a while back of a turbo'ed GT running a 9.83 and putting a major ass-whoopin' on a Viper?

Anyone notice the price of gasoline dropping a bit or is it just my imagination. The drop before the summer storm.

That's funny Bob, I was thinking the same thing. It dipped about $0.15/gallon here. I wonder if it's going to approach the $4/gallon mark again this summer when everyone is out and about traveling and playing with their summer toys?
Speaking of spring and summer, since we're in the middle of a late snowstormhere in Michigan, is spring or summer ever going to get here? Stupid cold weather and snow!!! Anyone in a warm weather area, please feel free to rub it in!!!
