yeah but i probably will be a good car for her to learn in. At least until she gets use to driving. You should really encourage her to to learn how to drive the 5 speed through once she gets use to it. I swear now that i have one i never want another automatic. They are just so much funnier to drive. But anyways good luck with that Hoags. Don't forget the crash helmet and protective (J/K)

Ride, definetly get used books, sometimes depending on the class the professor doesn't even use the book, due to them just needing a book for a class requirement from a department chair. If you find that out early in the semester, sometime the book store will let you return it... Money in the pocket, which you will need.... ( one of the joys to being an art major, NO BOOKS! HAHAHAH)

Dan, A TRACER? Are you kidding me? are you playing a bad joke on her, you can tell us... J/k actually i think it's a good car for her to start out in, if she beats it up, (hopefully she wont) it's only for her to get around in and doesn't have to be perfect.

OK!,OK!,OK!...But I have to look at it this way...The 4 Cylinderserves me two purposes:

1. Good on gas, she will not be comming to me for gas $ everyday.
2. I will not have to be concerned with her driving to fast, although it is a peppy little thing.

It is a great little starter car for the girl, And the thing is in great shape both body and motor which means less work for me to do.

As for teaching her to drive the 5 speed it will only be done so that she has the know how in cans of an emergancy. I don't need her tooling around in the GT, it has been tough enough to give it up to the wife.

Ride, one last thing about the books, If you buy new, don't take off the plastic wrapper, you will not get a full return price if you do not need it.
Just had another thought for you...a lot of the new books come with CD Roms, even if the prof. doesn't reference the CD make sure you check them out they can be very helpfull.

As for you Tam...you should realize that sometimes you don't always have to make things better for the kids than what we had it. lol.

See ya guys,

grfnkl
07-13-2005, 06:41 AM
Dan, just brought up a point about the books, those CDroms, make sure you return them with the books you'll get more money for them.

I don't blame you dan with idea of having a 4 banger for fuel costs... sometimes i wish i could drive my 88 G/A for that reason alone.

LoL hey thanks guys - I've already bought several used books - turns out frats are a great place to find guys who wanna get rid of their books. And dan, the tracer is a good idea for your daughter - it's rediculously underpowered, so she can focus solely on driving. LoL - I'm mainly glad it's American :)

I'm really bored, so I'll tug Lee's and Dan's chains for a bit.

Disclaimer###### This is in light-hearted spirit, and I in NO way am making any attempt to insult, disparage or otherwise provide any wrongful impression of these two fantastic members of this forum. If for any reason, someone feels that way, then you obviously didn't read this far down. :grinno: I am J/K re this, no offense meant to any of the guys. I just know these dudes, even if NET only, and feel like bantering with them.

Dan, okay a Tracer. The daughter will feel the need for speed, so you are obviously depriving her of her right to scream away at stoplights. What will she ever say to her girls?:lol2:

Lee, okay books. Save the $$$$$, find a hot chick to share HER text with you!!!!!!!!!!!! :evillol:

There's more, but enough for now, LOL.

For those that do not know by now there is a bit of inside joking that goes on between Lee, Tam and Me. We have been working together on the GA Forum for a while now helping in any way we can. So if there is something that is directed to one of us by another and you don't really get it don't pay any attention to it, it is usually some type of friendly insult that has some sort of meaning to us.

With that said, Tam we need Lee to concentrate on his studies, what sort of example would we (as the real world wise elders) be setting if we encourage the activation of his libido. He should realize that if he is having trouble with the ladies all he has to do is ask you and me we will have the answer. However I do like your idea about sharing the text book. That would not have worked for me, if my wife even thought I was "sharing text" she would automatically asume that "sharing text" would have a different meaning.

Lee, I have to ask...in which of your classes do you have the "Asshole" professor? Each semester you will get one, it is part of the liberal arts requirements, I do not have proof of this but it is an observation that I made when I was taking classes. I am sure some of the other members on this thread can verify my thoughts about this.

On to a different subject. I will most likely be starting a new thread in the next few days about an A/C issue on the GAGT, I am going to try to look at it this weekend and then I'll post what I have going on. So guys please watch for it and give me your input.

See ya later, gotta run, but I may be back later tonight if I can't get any shut eye.
Dan

Definetly agree with you on the asshole teacher. It seems like you have one every semister. I don't know if it is my natural bad luck or if every college student feels this way, but it always seemed like the biggest prick was the professor of the toughest class i had every semister.

Hey Dan, how much did you pay for the Tracer?

Hoags
07-20-2005, 09:17 PM
Grandam, I was able to pick it up for $2,000.00. Believe it or not with 121,000 miles there is not so much as a drip of oil from the engine, and the thing actually has some get-up and go to it. I am very pleased with the fact that it doesn't even have any engine noises such as valve slap or knock, it doesn't sound like an engine with that kind of miles on it. The interior is even cleaner.

07-21-2005, 01:36 AM
Well, being a Tracer, most likely it was rather well-cared for and not rodded around. Sounds like a good ride for the daughter, all prior razzing aside.

Cody, Every testing facility has the easy tester and the hard ass tester. It has been that way for years, I gor my liscence over 25 years ago and it was the same story. Everyone getting their liscence said the same thing..." I hope I don't get the hard ass!". Don't sweat it, They aren't as tough as others say they are, They're just trying to get you worked up. If you have been practicing a lot you'll do fine.

Good luck, let us know how things go.

Good Luck Grandam,

just keep this in mind, Hope for the "easy instructor" or do what i did, work the charm... cuz i got the luck of getting the only female instructor, had her focus on what i was saying and not what i was doing.... hehehe......

Better words of advice, take your time through the course, they won't fail you for going to slow. I'm not sure what it's like by you, but over hear in NJ, they inspect your car before going through... if anything make sure the car you are bringing is in good working order, and finally you may be better running the course without the A/C on, reguardless of how hot it's outside.

Aight, thanks alot guys! And I turn 16 the 27th but I have to take it the thursday after my B-day so yea. There is road construction at where the test is originaly at so it is taking in a different part of town but they dont have the cones up there like they do on the original spot. So I cant even see what it will be like and try it out before I take the test. I know I have to parallel parking down, I have no problem with that, the only thing I am sort of nervous about is the backing right turn. The S-10 and the trailblazer turn sharper than my car so when I take the GA, I have to get about 2-4 inches away from one of the polls and then just keep it going in steady till its straight. I know where all controls are, the uphill parking, turning left and right (I meen come on, its not that hard to turn an angle to another street) and how fast to drive down an alley way. So yea, only 4 days till thursday and I just need to think during it. My Behind The Wheel instructor said that the driving portion takes like 10 minutes. I just need to hold out for that long, hahah. Well thanks guys for the encouragement.

Oh wow they actually make you drive one of your cars to take the test. When I took my test you used the drivers ed car that you took drivers ed in, and they never made you parrallel parking during the driving protion of the test. They made us do did it during drivers ed class and that was it. But anyways, good luck on thursday when you take your test, and happy B-Day

Cody,

One more bit of advice, the instructors love to try to catch you off guard. They may try to get you to make a turn from the wrong lane of tell you not to bother stopping at the next stop sign, or tell you that you don't need to use your turn signal at the next intersection. DON'T FALL FOR IT! make sure to do things the way you know is right and pay attention to the details.

Good luck,

Knife, as for me, I also passed on the first shot. The only thing that I did or didn't do was... At the end of the driving course I was told to pull up and park in a spot off to the right, I made sure to use the signal, pulled the car in (1972 Pontiac) put it in park, shut off the car, un-did the seat belt, then the instructor looked at me and said, "OK, what did you forget to do?" After about 45 seconds I realized that I had not set the parking brake, I set it and he said " That was your only mistake, You pass."

Lee, okay books. Save the $$$$$, find a hot chick to share HER text with you!!!!!!!!!!!

LoL workin on that, Tam. Sorry it took me so long to reply guys - i've been pretty busy as of late; adjusting to this new lifestyle.

LMAO! :grinyes: o god you guys kill me :) - yeh I haven't had too much trouble with the libido thing, Dan. The chicks here are actually really stuck up (due to the average 1 to 10 girl to guy ratio) so I do good with some, but whenever I piss off or "mess up" with others, I don't even worry about it; I just remind myself that they're irrelevant and that I'm here for the studies. But when I don't mess up, I am the mac daddy! :smokin: LoL. And per your request, I'll be sure to consult you dating gurus whenever I'm having trouble :evillol: After all, as Tam said; I'm "not the only buck in the woods" LoL! o and as far as the sharing text thing, it's a great way to provide an opportunity for interaction; and I know several people that are currently borrowing books from each other (not neccesarily to get the chics either) - though it is a brilliant way to get the women, especially when you're the one lending the book, because then you can tease the shit out of them with it :).

Parking brake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Damn good hint!!!!!!!!!!

Not too many drivers with autos use them anymore, although they should. I don't, but I should.

LoL or if you really wanted to score points with the driver through use of the parking brake, you could show him your "M@D L337 Dr1ftiN6 Sk1Lz!!!!1" by doing a hesitation / weight shift on a long turn and pulling the ebrake to drift; thus showing him your badass driving skills. Or even going around a turn in town. Take a turn going like 20 mph while he's writing on his clipboard, turn out away from the turn for a split second (hesitation / weight transfer) right before the apex, and then whip it into the turn while ebraking to show him what a B@dazz3d Drft3R U R!!!! LoL gol i'm just goofy right now. For disclaimer reasons, don't do any of what I just said on a driving test (though it would be funnier then hell) LoL. Good luck with that test, Cody.

Talk to you all later.

Oh, and I just thought I'd throw in - if any of you haven't chimed in your respects into one of the many "Andy Commeration threads" I would advise to do so. Good luck everyone.

Hey Tam,

The fact is that I don't use it on the auto trans in the Suzuki, you would think that I would have that emblazened in to my thick skull after the driving test. Any way another good reason to use the E-Brake is that on most cars with rear drums using it will help keep the rears adjusted.

Lee, I am soooo glad that you are concentrating on the studies. It sounds to me like you focus is right on track, good for you. I hope all is going well with your classes.

Make us proud!!!!

Hey Ride, Lee, You remeber when I said that I also wanted to get a GTO after college? well I have my chance right now, My dad works at john deere and some guy came in from GM (from our dealer in town) and they did this buisness check for vehicles and every single person had a GM vehicle in the shop (accept for only 1 person) and also, this is run by our county becuase our dealer got in two new GTO's...2005..and they wanted to give one away to a person that was already a owner of a GM vehicle...well, out of all the places to get picked, John deere and Firstone got picked. My dad was going to put his name in the drawing but instead, he put my name. So for the people that work at both paces, I have a 1&200 chance of winning it. Hahaha...

Oh Dan I forgot to answer your question in my last big post - about the asshole professor. I actually have been very ridculously lucky, in the fact that I do not have any douche-bag professors (yet) - my least favorite is just simply boring. Honestly, all of them are cool. Hey guys...I just heard on our local radio [AM Talk] I know...I'm getting old listening to AM News/Talk but it is the only way I can keep with what is going on. Any way the host was talking about law that either passed or is going to pass making it illegal to smoke in you own car. What the hell? That's wrong, how can they tell us that we can and can't do in our car. They say it's a distraction...I can thinl of several other things that are more distracting while driving...Eating a Big Mac for one and how about the ladies that put on their make-up while driving? OH yea, how about the things that your lady can do to you while driving...Some of those can be a BIG distraction. You guys know what I'm getting at...what gives NJ the right to tell me not to smoke in my car if I decide to drive through their state, or NY telling me that I can't use my cell phone while driving.

Sorry guys...The thread from Dave in Texas got me going this morning.

Dan: I heard about what NJ is trying to do with that law, about not smoking in cars... ( parents extremely upset) I doubt it'll get passed, there are enough police that smoke while driving you really think they'll enforce that, ( other then the rookies) i do agree thier are far worse things people do when driving in the car... such as make-up, even cell phones are bad (without hands free) Learned my lesson once with that one....... Leave it to NJ to mess it all up as usual... LMAO

Dan: I agree, i don't like the G/A "haters" either. Either your here to help or get help, not to down grade. As you just said "For as much as we love our GAs at some point we hate the thing as well" i can agree with this on a daily basis with my GT.

Are car auctions a good place to buy a car?
I heard you can't take it for a test drive but they let you run it while its on display.

Auctions aren't always the best place to buy a car. the better ones let you take a look at the car in person and let you test drive it, unless they otherwise inform you of everything that maybe wrong. You take a huge risk though, that the person is or isn't telling you everything that they may know of about the car. my thought is, if it's close enough to where you live, and you can look at it and drive it, the better off you are from any hidden surprises. Some also offer warranties, make sure you read the fine print if they offer one.

I;ve sold cars on ebay before and have done very well, the main key is asking questions and taking a look at the car in person.

Yeah I would avoid auctions unless you are looking for something rare and are willing to put in the wrench time and the money to make it run the way you think it should. Alot of the time at auctions people take there car there just to dump it on someone else. You can get good deals out of them but I have seen more bad than good, and again that is my opinon. The best way to go about any purchase to talk it to a mecanhic and have it checked out before you purchase it.

You can get some good deals at an auction however you can also get a piece of junk that looks good. I have been around the new car business all of my life, I can tell you that the auction is the place that the dealers will take the trade-in that will not sell on their lots for any number of reasons things such as cars with bad valves that they have put in some heavy oil to cover the tapping or cars that have been trashed. It is amazing what a good detailer can do to make a car look good on the surface but underneath the mask is a pile of crap. If you go to an auction, most of them will have an open observation period prior to the actual auction. Make sure that you look them over real well before buying.

My personal opinion would be to buy from a dealer with a good reputation or from a private owner where you can take your time to look it over.

this is to grandamdriver52, where the hell did you find the picture of the GA convertable? I was just arguing last week with someone who said GM didn't make GA conv. and I new back in the late 80's early 90's they did makem. Now I have proof of life! Thankx
Also about the pontiac G6, have you noticed the body is close to the GTO's ? Gm is making terrable mistakes dropping so many car lines, like OLDS, the GA's then they come out with this Cobalt to compete with the Neon?!? NEon is Krap anyway you cut it. YA they've got bolt on turbos intercoolers etc. But after about 20000 mile you need a new engine becuase your spinning bearings, using more oil then you can add. Im soorie if I'm stepping on toes here but I truely Love the Automobile in many forms, new and old but todays autos have no Character. They all look alike, and they get bad gas mileage. I have a 1966 olds Dynamic 88 with 125000 original miles, it has a 425 rocket motor with three 2's and it gets just as good gas milage (25mpg) as any new car does. I am a little ticked at GM but I still buy, drive them but that dont mean I cant Bitch.LOL!

So yea, And guys on the GTO...I never got it...Some guy at firestone got it and guess what he did with it?...He sold it to his nephew in indiana so that was retarded...he has no pride in the GTO at all...it actully made me sick...

Grandamdriver is correct GM has never produced a Grand Am convert. A conversion company did the work, and just about any car can be made into a poptop if you have enough $$$. Actually, the Pontiac sunfire when it first came out as a conv. was a coupe that was pulled off the production line and sent out to a conversion company and then sent to the dealers. I ordered one for a customer (when I was selling) and it took an additional 3 weeks than a coupe or sedan because of the conversion. Just a little tid-bit.

Cody, how's the drivers freedom thing going? Are you tired of lugging all of your buddies around, (the ones that have deep pockets and short arms that can't reach the cash in those pockets? That got olld fast with my buddies, I started charging them to get in the car. lol.

Be safe,
Dan

Well maybe I won the bet after all, a pictures worth a thousand words. I live in Indiana and I remember back in the late 80's I saw a couple GA convt. But I guess like you said Hoags you can do anything if you got the $$$.
I just got tired of this guy, he's a young fellow who thinks he's never wrong and has all the answers. I far from know everything, i wish I did, but I do know what I saw, and it was a 88-89 GA convt. so for once I kinda proved him wrong:) That was deadon Hoags, about the "friends with deep pockets and short arms" oh how I remember those days.. I went through the same thing, 'I got shotgun' will cast ya 10$ these days. LMAO! :)
