I dont really like 4 cylinder engines myself, I like the V6, but because it was too expensive for insurance and the car in general was a lot more expensive, so I just got what I could and got a 5 speed because I regret having an auto Maxima that was plain slow.

Window price was 29,775... including tax and license, we got it for 28,000 (out the door) ... What can I say? Asians don't pay full price. :D Corona Nissan is the sh!t... I love those guys... I got my 96 SE from them also :)

4bangers are rough, less refined... and the v-spec boyz are taking out their balance shafts for more hp... crazy mofos. I drive my mom's Sentra 2.5LE sometimes and that thing pulls like a mofo. People don't realize that the 2.5 is only .5 litter less than the 3.0 V6 but the 2.5 has CVTC which really helps the car in the lower RPMs. They are blinded by the cylinder count.

I read the Altima forums a lot also... I love the thread with the Maxima guys trying to get dyno graphs for the Alti's so they can sue Nissan for 15hp .... hehe I would have gotten a 3.5SE Alti myself but the wife hates the interior... loves the exterior... But she said, "when you are driving, you don't care how the car looks from the outside" She also hates the 6th gen Max... I kinda like it.. hehe

BTW... I love what you did with your car. Love those HIDs...

And as far as people saying Nick is disrespectful and that he has no right being here, don't know that he help the Nissan aftermarket community by producing a cost effective underdrive pulley. I read his thread on the Altima forum back in January :p

Thanks, I really was tired of driving it stock because every grandma had one :(.

I honestly like the Maximas Exterior better, of course that is stock for stock, once you throw on the Aero Kit, they are both hot cars. Maxima interior is even better, much more luxurious feel when sitting in it. Your wife had a better decision.

This proves that hp wise, a 4th gen auto Max has nothing on a 3rd gen 5spd Alti. If you call this "Jumping on the bandwagon", I call this "THE FACTS".

Next we have gear ratios! hehe But I'll save that for later :D

I don't think Nick was disrespecting people because he only stated that he beat a 97 GLE auto before he was flamed. And I don't think he was overrating his Altima because my mom just bought herself a 03' Sentra 2.5 LE and that thing pulls hard. Yes it is an auto. Those 2.5s have continuous valve timing just like the 3.5s. The torque on those things are freakin incredible during normal driving! The 3.0 V6 is outdated... I'm either going boost or getting a new car.... Leaning toward boost because I love my Max :p

Ok, now after getting a ride in a Automatic 2000 Nissan Maxima, I was really dissapointed. I was thinking Oh man, he can smoke my buddies GSR so he doesnt think honda is the best anymore, but little did I know, this thing lags. Transmission lags inbetween shifts and doesnt even hit red line. It was a sad experience driving in a Auto Max, and my older Maxima definatley felt more powerful, I dont know if was just because the 2k Maxima was that much smoother or because it was that much more under powered.

So actually, if you guys can find someone with an Automatic 2000 Maxima, 100% stock as the one I did race, I would love to do it again on film so you guys can see how slow the maxima is with the Auto tranny.

Yeah, the y2k auto Max is a dog.... Compared to a 4th gen, they make almost identical hp until 5200 RPM.... At this point, the 5th gen switches to the short intake runners and keeps on making hp all the way up to the redline while the 4th gen runs out of breath.... Now, you said that it didn't shift at redline which means that the auto didn't take advantage of the power that is left up in the RPMs. The y2k also weighs more than the 4th gen so what you were experiencing is the sad truth that automagics sux.. hahahaa.... But seriously though.... Manual shift the auto and you should be able to get it up to the redline.... Much much better results! :D

Ofcourse there are other factors to why your friends Max is slow... Time to replace spark plugs? Maybe the PCV valve is clogged? Bad ignition coil? Bad mass air flow sensor? Bad O2 sensor? The list goes on.... I went through the same sh1t not too long ago with my Max... Now I'm burning rubber going into 2nd gear!!!!! :cool: Like I said b4... My slightly modded Max beat my wife's 3.5SE autotragic.... This is at any speed.. hehe.... freeway 60-100... 0-60...etc

Oh and yes... I am a newbie at Altima.net also... but I have not posted... dude, i guess the biggest argument i still have would be the torque thing. i know that you can get a Maxima off the line, a manual will beat any automatic, andywhere, off the line, for the simple fact that you can more easily get the power to the wheels. but the max is carrying 25 extra lb-ft. of torque, which is gonna catch up to you sooner or later. how could it possibly not, especially when the cars are of equal weight. just doesn't quite make sense to me, i guess. and i never said it wasn't possible, i don't deny that it is possible. but i maintain that a in a race between a professionally driven altima 2.5 5sp vs. a professionally driven 4th gen auto, the max will win 9 times out of 10. ok, that's it

Best Ive seen for an automatic Maxima 0 to 60 was 7.3 on a 95 or 96.

The amazing thing about continuous variable timing cam (CVTC) is the amount of torque it adds to the engine down in the lower RPMs. I would say that for daily driving, the 2.5 would FEEL stronger than the 3.0 VQ. Torque is good if you are pulling a trailer (or if you are Jared before he went on his Subway diet) .... Doesn't do sh1t for you if you are going from 0-60... (The infamous S2000 arguement).

Ever heard of a Honda, called a torqueless wonder, its amazing what gears can do. How else would a ITR run a low 15 second 1/4 with only a 128lbs of torque.

Torque is the application of flywheel hp to wheel hp, it does everything for you, hp does more for you on the top end, go ask any professional they will tell you the same. If a car has more torque which means more than total hp unless you're going to top end then it will pull on the other car with more hp and less torque.

The best times I've seen for a 5spd 2.5 Altima is 9.5 and 9.6 that's with a professional driver, so much for shorter gear ratios and the best times I've seen for a 95/96 Max professionally driven is 6.6/7.0 auto/stick.

As far as autos suck, my car is every bit as fast as your stick N1smo, if you look at any comparos on the org they will tell you the same, you'd be damn lucky to win by 1/2 to 1 1/2 car length at your very best.

Besides all of this other stuff, Nick only takes one comparo out of the many to post timeslips, that could be the driver or the bad condition of the car, like N1smo was stating.

I know for a fact that the 2k auto or stick Max will have terrible performance if any of the following are not tended to properly:
Sparkplugs: Most of us 2k drivers don't change them or even have them checked until 40k miles or so because of the recommended 100k tuneup. I didn't until 58k and my plugs were fried, my car was pulling very slowly and I didn't know why, after the plugs were changed, then bam it was on again.

Bad O2 sensors, obviously if the car can't breath right, it can't pull and the list does go on as N1smo said.

What about the professionally driven 2.5 5spd 0-60 times 9.5/9.6, this can beat a 95 Max, or even an auto 2k, which were professionally driven at 0-60 of 6.6/6.9/7.0/7.5, explain that?

are you serious???. my friend has a 1989 corvette Automatic. it only has 245 hp so the fact that it has 330 lbs of torque should't matter when we race right?

The S2000 argument is bs, because people who don't know how to drive that car are the only ones who say that it has low torque.
You have to launch that car at really high rpms to get the most out of it, the beauty behind it is that the cars tach winds out to 9000 rpms.

That argument has no place with the Max and here is the easiest way to explain torque to the laymen:

Take a bottle with a twist off cap, now turn it, that is the application of torque, without that your bottle doesn't open unless you pry off or break off the top.

Torque doesn't do anything for you, that is the dumbest statement ever made on this or any auto forum, go make that somewhere else and they will laugh or lock or both you out of their forum.

Here's another reason that torque is proof: Take a 93 Altima and a 93 Honda Accord 4cyl, both cars make around the same hp and weigh almost the same but why is it that the Nissan with greater torque 150 made better times to 60 and was stronger throughout the powerband vs the Honda.

That statement kinda reminds me of the old addage, whoever said that size doesn't matter needs to have his LITTLE head examined.

You are so stupid with that argument about torque and the power band. The Maxima will beat the Altima because the torque of the VQ is in the right place to do it, between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm's. You obviously have not done your homework on the matter. Pick, my observations are that you are the main instigator here... Just incase you have lost focus let me give you a recap... This has turned into a debate about a 97GLE vs a 2.5s Altima... Not as the title states. And I have provided plenty of evidence that Nick can beat a 97GLE... not empty statements like "the Altima is heavier than the Maxima".

This guy ran 13.9 in an Altima virtually stock.... Nissan miss led Maxima owners into thinking that the 5th gen Maxima is faster and more powerful than the Altima... Marketing!!! people! I saw that video also ;) There was no mention it was a 3.5... Also, driver is a big factor in races.... If you go on the 1/4 forum in the .org.. You will see the dude's post that said he ran 13.9 with an .org member at the track as witness. The best time I've seen by a Max 3.5 6spd is also 13.9 and I think you know who I'm talking about if you go to the .org at all. And his Max is far from being stock...

I also believe that the 6spd has a larger power loss than the 5spd... A lot of the V-spec guys are complaining about their 6spd.... I could be wrong, just going by what they say.

Dont forget, a guy with a V6 Altima ran a 13.8 with a Maxima witness!!! You can check that out at the Org to, it happened in Sacramento!!

Ok, so my dads truck has 315lbs of torque right, but I smoked him in a race, can you believe that??????? OHHH MY GODDDD is it possible, he should beat a S2000, they are both RWD two door automobiles, seems logical. So wait, I have more torque then an S2000, I should beat one too, wait I also have more torque then a Sentra SE-R and I can beat one of those as well as a Type R integra. Oh yeah a Honda prelude, I can smoke one of those even though they run low 15's and my Auto Max couldnt even beat a 5 speed lude, oh yeah, what about that hatchback with a B16 in it, I should own him and his 111lbs of torque, thats an easy race.

You guys have a lot to learn about cars, I know you guys think that if you put a bunch of gas into your car it makes it go faster, but thats ok, you guys do that and drive your cars. I can beat a 4th Gen Automatic Maxima with 205lbs of torque. I even beat a Maxima with 217lbs of torque, so you guys can send my cookies to my house address, PM for shipping insturctions :rolleyes:
