not one that old, although it would be cool.

i was thinking more like this:
http://foto.spullenbank.nl/common/img/00/00/03/65/_T36589.jpg

drop in an S2/RS2's DOHC 2.2-litre Straight Five turbo engine (yes, i'd have to change my name) add a bigger turbo, maybe some new internals etc...

900bhp potential. (no, i'm not kidding, they really can make 900bhp!)

i wish i had space to work on my own car...

i've found an engine, $1225 with all ancillaries/turbo gear.

hopefully i can skank out on Nicole over christmas, spend like $400 on her and buy the engine with what's left...

A one car garage isn't enough room to do a motor swap.

But it is nice for little stuff.

2.2 Straight six
11-25-2006, 05:52 PM
not for you. GM's silly design work means you have to drop the car over the engine. with the Audi i want, i drop the engine into the car.

damn, i want that engine....

skibum1111
11-25-2006, 05:58 PM
Umm, no you can get that ls1 out the top, its just alot easier to take it out the bottom. I did one out the top, you have to lift the car up almost as high to clear the firewall and the radiator support, but it can be done.

2.2 Straight six
11-25-2006, 06:02 PM
ooooh...

can't you pull all camaro engines through the top if you remove the engine alone without the tranny?

Rally Sport
11-25-2006, 06:06 PM
'the hell does that mean?

Basicly, good luck..

Also im not completely sure on this, but in all past generations its easier to take it out top than the bottom..

Mr. Luos
11-25-2006, 06:08 PM
It is easier to leave the motor down and lift the car off the k-member with a 4th gen.

You can leave everything on the motor, tranny included. Otherwise you have to tear the motor down to pull it from the top.

Genopsyde
11-25-2006, 06:51 PM
i pulled my motor and trans together out the top.

skibum1111
11-25-2006, 06:55 PM
I did motor and trans out the top as well. It can be done on an ls1 just the motor, but getting the top transmission bolts out looks like its quite impossible, never mind reassembly.

Do you understand the changes that need made??
Cheaper to buy an LS1 Camaro and sell yours.

I am all for the swap, but you are bitching about bills (don't we all??) and wanting to spend more to swap in a V8.
I'm just kidding about bills, I live at home.

I know exactly what's in store for that. I made the sticky thread, remember? :grinyes: The only bills I have are what I spend on my car.

It'll be a spring project at very earliest, the targa top is the priority as of now anyways.

Genopsyde
11-26-2006, 12:53 AM
tell ya what Shan, if you want an LS1 and that targa top, you better start looking into a roll bar. SFC's or not you'll twist that thing in half.

Look into a single bar that will run from the left side to the right, and will be right behind the seats. That way it won't hinder getting in and out of the car.

Geno is right. I was involved in a 3rd gen build, 400hp out of a 350 truck block, even with sfc's you could still pop the rear glass open. Targa top means removing the center support from the roof. I'd be more worried about the car folding than twisting though, especially in an accident situation.

666_speed
11-26-2006, 01:20 PM
Targa is first, A roll cage will probably be a must. The 6 point ones are not too bad. I'm glad you guys have advice for me haha, I'd be lost. I'm only kicking around the idea of a v8 swap as of now, but I am awaiting my next paycheck to try a new route for the targa top to see which turns out better.

Being unsure about your future sucks ass. I am in the same position right now. I envy people who know what they want to do in life and have already found that path. I just picked accounting as a major to hold me over til I decide what I really want to do. Who knows, maybe I'll just stick with it and make some good money. Money is always nice to have.

after looking through the snap-on site again, i can't help but think that all their stuff is ridiculously over-priced. socket sets way into the hundreds and for that you really don't get much either. i know they're top-quality, but there's a point where you can spend stupid amounts of money and the quality doesn't warrant it. i looked at an apprentice set and that costs $2,700. for that money i can go to another company (Draper Expert/Craftsman/etc) and get more tools for less money.

skibum1111

Personally, I'd avoid craftsman. I've broken most of their hand tools working around the house, get tons of crap when I take them back to get new ones. The tools I have from snap-on have lasted for years, only had to return one socket that i shattered with an impact gun (yup, use impact sockets only with a gun) and had no problems with it. Half the time sears doesn't have the replacement tool in stock which is what led me to snap-on. Plus, if you are working in a garage the warranty on craftsman doesn't apply.

hmm.. odd.

my friend managed to break a 12-point deep impact socket on something, never seen that happen with even and impact gun. and they have some serious gear in their workshop (they have a 1,800lb/ft impact gun for plant machinery)

i'd go with snap-on, but i can't afford their stuff, at least not now. where my friends work they have something like $220,000 worth of snap-on tools!

skibum1111
11-27-2006, 07:12 PM
I've broken more sockets with hand tools than with impact tools. Seems like a 3 foot bar with 12 feet of pipe on the end of it might have something to do with it. The sad part was it was the only way the axle nut was coming off the jeep.

Must just be your sears, I never have any problems taking back craftsman tools. Haven't had to take back to many tools though.

One brand I really like is mintcraft. It sounds like a cheap knockoff brand but they have a good warranty (life time in store exchange). They are made in America and are almost as cheap as the japanese brands. We carry them on at the hardware store I work at, so I get them at wholesale.

i've been looking at a company called Draper Expert. i dunno if you guys get them. they look pretty good and are priced well too.

i'm thinking Draper Expert for most of the sockets and stuff. and Teng for my torque wrenches and a spinner handle.

skibum1111
11-27-2006, 07:49 PM
I get accused of using sears tools for professional jobs, which is why I'm sick of their crap. I work on cars as a hobby, and for some strange reason they can't seem to understand that. As for Draper tools, never seen them here, but that doesn't mean that they are not here in the states.

haha, we do that at college. my friend and i were dismantling a Rolls-Royce Eagle diesel engine. we'd get the breaker bar and put like a 4-ft tube onto it and have both of us lever it (combined weight of about 320lb). on some of the crank retainers we'd have a bar each, hook it on and sit on it and it still didn't come off.

going to take my camera and get a pic of the crank on Thurs. i think it weighs something like 150lb maybe more. i'm sure it weighs more than me (140lb)

Cheater bars are nice... 1" drive impacts are even nicer...

We've got both snap-on and craftsman in our shop at home, and for hand tools I will take snap-on anyday of the week over craftsman.

On the price issue, when you make your living wiht the tools, might as well get the best that you can since its what is putting food on the table.

i don't doubt that at all, but there is a point when something are close to unobtainable. although it seems the best option is to buy a whole set (tool box with all the gubbins already in it) as it's obviously cheaper.

One of my friends has $105k invested in tools, mostly snap-on, few matco tools in there for variety. The sad part of it is he doesn't turn wrenches on cars anymore, now he's a service writer for a dealership. It is nice going to his house to fix a problem because if its a tool that exists and I don't have it, he does.

Before that last post, you guys didn't mention matco or duralast. I know the guys on Horsepower use Matco. I think my dad has an assortment of tools from different companies, but I think he has mostly craftsman.
