Awesome.
Happy birfday sucka.
Those drawings are awesome. Very nice to see such care taken in planning... puts a tear in my eye buddy, a tear (weepy Willimo).... I saw your motor at Hooby Looby, $26. I don't know if that's more or less than at your LHS, but it's there. What would be nice is if they threw a half-off sale... right now. NOW! Do you year me Hoob Loob!??
Thanks Will. Lots of time is going into the design of it. Total time on the build (including design) so far, 174 hours. There are still many more designs yet to come
At my LHS the motor is $30, I dont really feel like running over to Hooby-Looby because they most likely wont have it. Mine Hoob Loob carries tamiya bikes usually, and a few Tamiya cars. When I go to my LHS I should try to get a birthday discount.
----------------------------
To everyone else:
Thanks for the birthday wishes. And can somebody get me a dimensions on the diameter of the fly wheel? Also can people search for some manual transmissions for a 426? I need to study now. I'll check back later.

Thank you for information that I have already stated. If I had my TIG welder at my leasure I would use it. However both my MIG and TIG are up in Michigan at one of the metal shops I work at.

Whats new?
I got the motor today. Just did a real quick mock up to put it on the chassis and see what it looks like. It looks like shit. Absolute shit. The thing is huge. I had planned for a big motor but it looks like shit in the chassis. It looks as if its a 4026. I'll get pics later, but right now Im pissed off.

I got the motor. It looks like shit in the chassis. Its too damn big. It fits but it looks like it came from a Catipillar 726 (Worlds Biggest Dumptruck). Tell me what y'all think. Im not sure. I rarely see cars with just their chassis. The frame for one looks too narrow.

Damn mike that is big. I hate to say it but did you think of making a new frame or fixing that one.
mike@af
05-22-2004, 12:02 AM
Damn mike that is big. I hate to say it but did you think of making a new frame or fixing that one.
Turns out the frame I have spent 173hours on is trash. After hundreds of hours and design, somethings just didnt look right.
A. It was weak, I didnt design reinforcements.
B. It was ugly.
C. The engine didnt fit
D. I decided to change some of the body design.
So yes, I will be building yet another chassis! Pretty stressful and pissy day. So I just ran to Wally-World and picked up a '32 Ford Vicky to assemble a rolling chassis since both my design and the Vicky use the relatively same chassis. Thus I will build the same 1/25 Chassis 4 times larger. Its a great tool to measure off of. Should have thought of that earlier.
Another problem is Im craming a big block into a small block street rod. Oh, well. I like to plan things that are just beyond what I think I am capable of doing. I like a challenge, and the rewards is quite gratifying.

Its all fun. Half the problem is not having all the parts available. So Im going to start off building the transmission. After that I will check with my old frame and see how it looks.
I just bought and assembled a '32 Ford Vicky to look at the rolling frame. I'll post pics as soon as finish eating.

UPDATES:
Last night I went to Wally-World and bought an AMT '32 Ford Vickie. I thought it would be excellent reference material as far as the chassis and suspension components. I quickly assembled the rolling chassis so its not detailed, since all its being used for is reference. The build had some painful areas to work through in which parts didnt fit, horrible assembly procedure or something else. But who the hell cares, its not for a comp or show.

Sorry for the blurry pic, the shots were taken rather quickly.
As far as the build right now for the 1/6 Rod, I have been designing and planning the transmission assembly. The transmission will be built from scratch and its turning to be quite the challenge.
Thanks for your comments everyone, without you I probably would have quit this build. You keep me motivated!

I have spent numerous hours planning out the trans and how I will build it. This is design number three of the trans mission and I am heading towards the eleventh hour so far.

Please tell me what you think of the transmission design so far. I am just using that '32 Vickie tranny as reference. It still needs some more detail. But am I heading in the right direction?

The welder is small as hell thats for sure. The only problem is it being oxy-acetelyne and I hate oxy-acetelyne. Its like welding with a stick of plastic and a lighter. This is what I really want:

Thats part of the best part, looking at it and saying that came from nothing.
As far as display, I will build a 30"x18"x18" Plexi case for it. However, I might need to build a trailer for it when I take it to NNL :grinno:.

BTW:Mig is better when you weld thin metal and Tig when you weld bigger metal.
Other way around. MIG is used for welding heavy gauge steels, as well as tacking heavier steels since its wire feed. TIG is used to weld thinner metals such as 22Ga. as well as aluminum. To weld aluminum like 2049 you need to use TIG (or be really good at oxy-acetelyne) because you can adjust the frequency and amps. The frequency is set really high when welding aluminum. All in all MIG isnt as adjustable as TIG therefore TIG is most commonly used for all thicknesses and types of "hard" metals.
Thanks for the comments!

Then i havent understanded what they are in finnish :eek7:
Then in the Mig they weld with "sticks"
and in Tig is wire ??
MIG is wire feed with an inert gas usually argon.
TIG is with stick/rod to fill/join the metal. It does have a tungsten electrode in the torch to create the electric arc to weld. However it is not used to fill/join the metals, thats what the welding stick/rod is for.
Does that help? PM me if you have more questions as I would like for my thread to stay on topic.

Thanks for the comments guys!
The bell housing is turning out to be a bitch. I didnt think it was going to be as hard as it is. Trying to make a cone with a 45degree angle on one side and a 20degree angle on the other side with styrene is a pain.

Stop what you are doing. Wander aimlessly around your house. Go to your hobbyshop, go to Walmart. Look around at any and all plastic things to see what may be about the right size and shape. Tableware, structural shapes, parts for things other than models, packaging for anything. You'll stumble over something that you can work with for the bellhousing. Modifying is always easier than scratchbuilding.
