ULTIMATE SCRATCHBUILD: 1:12 Hot Rod-Updated 03/12/06

Stop what you are doing. Wander aimlessly around your house. Go to your hobbyshop, go to Walmart. Look around at any and all plastic things to see what may be about the right size and shape. Tableware, structural shapes, parts for things other than models, packaging for anything. You'll stumble over something that you can work with for the bellhousing. Modifying is always easier than scratchbuilding.

I had done that previously for a couple days. I wish it would have worked. But so far its taking a turn for the better. It actually looks pretty good now (compared to what it was looking like). I'll post pics after some glue is done drying.

I have to say that looking at the plastic kit you built the engine doesn't look so far off in your chassis, I imagine that when there is some bodywork, suspension, wheels and tyres the engine will look smaller in relation to the car.

Actually, one more thing, what about modifying a yogurt pot for the bellhousing, they arte already slightly conical, cut out the base and tighten it up a bit and form your angles differently on both sides??

Thank you. That is quite the complement. Glad to see you following the thread. I appreciate your input for the chassis, I will see what I can do. Once I finish the trans I will bolt it on and drop it in to see how it looks.

I have finished the main part of the bell housing. It doesnt look so bad. I still need to putty it up which I will do in a little while. I have never really been good with styrene so I am quite impressed with myself.

The glue looks a little sketchy there but it will be covered up with some putty and more styrene for part of the gearbox.

Mike, good looking set up. How much power are you looking to get out of this? BTW, if you do enough searching, I'm sure you could get a decent TIG welder.

Just threw some putty on it! Not much as really changed. Just waiting for the putty to finish drying. So tomorrow I will probably start on the gear box.

The tranmission is starting to get annoying now. I need to build a box around a circle. Its not the easyiest thing to do.

Fine. I'll unstick it. I stickied it because it gets a lot of traffic as it is and is something actually pretty damn cool. I figured why the hell not, but since it's SUCH a big deal that it was stickied, it is now unstuck:rolleyes:

The main box for the hear housing has been created. There still a lot notches to be cut in it, so it looks a bit bulky. The putty has been applied just now. There is still much to be done so it looks a little shotty as of now.

Like what was stated before, its looking shotty. I am also running low on the epoxy putty. I need to pick some of that up. I was also going to get some Basic Type. Would that be good for smoothing small joints between styrene?

It looks fine, it's a work in progress. Stuff never looks how it should 'till the end. You seem to be on the right track. I have to agree with whoever it was that said once you get suspension on the frame and whatnot, it'll look right. Just like your transmission, things half complete look odd, but the finished project makes it all work together. As long as it's in scale... I wouldn't write off your old chassis just yet.

Thanks. After I get the transmission complete and some cylinders that are the same size of the wheels I'll set it up to see. I am really wanting to build a pro-ride frame though, so the rear end isnt so high, and it looks more "hot rod-ish". I guess we'll see when I finish the trans.

Thanks. It matches up pretty damn nice. I would take a picture but I have pieces that are catching the flywheel right now. Once I put the flange on the trans it will fit up perfectly.

UPDATES:

Just constructed the sump area as well as notched out part of the rear. This is going pretty smoothly. In the pictures you will see a rather large gap; that will be covered over with some .030"x.125" strip styrene. Tomorrow I will cut some half round sprue and get back to work on it, after the doctor. :banghead:

Im just wondering. But how many of you are still intrested in this project? It seems to have lost intrest and a lot of followers. I really have about 2 1/2-3 1/2 followers.

UPDATES:

I got a lot of work done today. Its really starting to look like something. I will be up late tonight working on the second section of the transmission (shifter box). I figured its still light out so I can get some good pictures now so here they are. I'll get more pictures later tonight hopefully, but they wont be the best quality because it wont be light out.
Sorry about the bad pictures. I didnt have my tripod handy. Anyway you can see what hass been done. After I work on it tonight Ill try to get better pictures.

UPDATES:

This is going a lot better than planned. I got pretty far tonight, it doesnt look like much since the last photos, but it was a struggle. So far I have spent about 42 hours on it, and about 40+inches of strip styrene. Tomorrow I might get pretty close to finishing the trans.

Here is the view of the inner structure of the main part of the second stage (did you catch that). The pics are a little blurry because I zoomed in on a piece thats about 5/8"x7/8", you can somewhat see the ribs.
I still need to putty up that second stage, but you can get the basic picture.
