Thank you guys! The last couple pages were definately a morale booster.

In about 45minutes Im off to work on it, I hope to accomplish a lot today and get pretty close to finish. The only thing I am having trouble with is the start cover, there is a bolt right next to it. I'll figure something out.

Whats new?

Well today was pretty much a clean up day for the trans. I spent hours puttying and sanding, puttying and sanding, puttying and sanding. Then after that I did some more puttying and sanding. I finally feel close to putting the ribs on, then I notice a dimple, a rather large dimple, in the styrene from where earlier putty got chemically hot. So I had to apply the Tamiya Epoxy putty, wait 6 damn hours for it to dry. Normally the "half-ass want to get it done for pete's sake" me would have just let it be, but it was too noticeable.

So, about an hour left of dry time and I get sucked into "The Shawshank Redemption". And you all know TV, especially American TV, there are commercials every 15 minutes to make a movie last 3 hours. Needless to say I could have put the ribbing on, but got sucked into watching a movie.

All in all, Im waiting for some touch up putty to dry and then Ill sand the last of it and put some ribbing on tomorrow. Hopefully.

Its good to see you here Josh. I know you arent a hot rod, your the import guy, hence your user name, but glad to see you here as well.

Yes, a couple weeks ago progress was going slower than a stoned turtle, but now school is out, and I can work on it more, except for my job.

Thanks a lot guys. Its greatly appreciated. Good to see you here Andrew.

As far as the details, I'm crunching some numbers right now. The RC wheels I have picked are 3-1/2" when to scale they are approximately 21" rims. Those are way to big for a hot rod, most hot rods have rims that are 17"-18.5". So what I am doing is making it 1/5 scale, it wont be a huge difference, but maybe enough to make the rims look proportional as well as the engine.

Well this project may be coming to an end.

I am going nuts, and I am very stressed out. I can not find wheels and tires the right sizes I am looking for. I will find the right size wheel but no tire, and vis-a-versa.

If I cant find wheels and tires this project will be scrapped.

Haha. I dont know what to do. I am going nuts. I have invested several hundred hours into this project, not to mention a lot of money. At first tires and wheels were no problem, but now I have decided I need 17" rims in the front otherwise the design just doesnt look right.

Right now Im trying to get in contact with Chris as to how he makes his tires. If I can have scratchbuilt tires then I can have scratchbuilt front rims and this wont be a problem. So please Chris, help me!

Don't give up, have you tried searching for wheels/tires from an RC catalog. The Tower Hobbies website might have something.

Good luck! :)

Thats all I have been doing is searching for RC stuff. I may have found something that might work with modification.

Now my problem is figuring out how high off the ground a normal pro-ride chassis rides. My model frame that I assembled sits a scale one foot (30cm) off the ground. IMO that is way to damn high, I want it sitting a a scale 1"-4" off the ground.

Well here what Im thinking of doing.

Last night I drew the plans out for the body and for the chassis, only side view, they look pretty good. Im not sure exactly how to make the rails yet, since they are curved, compound curved, shrunk, and pinched. Not to mention Im waiting for Chris' response on the tires.

Im not quitting this project, but I'm going to have a side project with it. Im thinking about running to the store and picking up a '37 Ford to modify. I have begun to see many hot rods around here, hell, I might as well build a 1/25 one. It could be good for Project Ace anyway, I might be able to get more ideas for the chassis and other stuff.

white97ex
05-30-2004, 12:02 PM
so you're gonna scrap the chassis? and start over? is the new fram gonna be tubular or gonna go the same square route?

Yea that chassis is scrap. The new chassis will still be C-Channel and box tubing. Most frames for old rods are all C-Channel or box tubing.

--------------------------------

Well it looks like all my projects are halted at the moment. My dad is drving me nuts. I just bought the '37, then we get into an arguement about college and other stuff and he takes the '37 away. My dad just drives me insane he treats me like I'm 8 years old.:banghead:

UPDATES:

Heres the new design for the frame and body. Body is rougly the same but the front grill is at a 90 degree and the top is a lot "smoother". Below are pictures of the design, Im sorry for the horrible quality, especially the view of the top. I'll get better pics tomorrow when its light out.

Tomorrow Im going to pick up a chunk of maple to make some hammer forms for the rails. The rails are just to "curvy" to make with out an oxy-acetylene torch (and I am out of gas, anyone have a couple hundred USD's lying around that they dont want?).

mike@af
06-03-2004, 05:57 PM
Right now Im working on designs to make the powerplant fuel injected with a ram air design. I am also designing new valve covers as well as a new intake manifold to sport the fuel rails and injectors.

If anybody has any good reference of scratchbuilt tubular intake manifolds it would be appreciated, as well as telling me exactly everthing I need to conver to make this puppy look fuel injected.

Later tonight I will post some more sketches...willing that I get some quality ones done.

Yea, progress has been slow. I have been spending a lot of time TRYING to sketch out stuff. I dont know whats up to day, everything I have sketched I have thrown away. I cant sketch worth a damn today at all, and Im about to my breaking point. I am getting so frustrated.

I might post it in S/D, Im thinking about sketching out a "finished" version of it, then post it in S/D. (sort of like the sketch in my other thread, the '37).

If your getting frustrated, just knock off for a while. There is nothing worse than forcing drawing on an off day. Take a break, go eat a snack, then try again in a couple of hours.

This an awesome project that you're undertaking. I started reading at the beginning of the thread and got to about the 15th page and said the heck with it. If you need any help with getting blanks made for the rims, let me know and I can turn them for you free of charge. If you do want them made, it will have to wait until the end of August. I'll be in a welding and machining class for the entire year, so, anything else that you might need machined, I could probably do it too.

Holy crap, I just saw your post count Mike. Damn.

Thanks. I will keep that in mind. What would the blank be made from? 6060 Billet Aluminum, 4040 Aluminum, or 2049? When I get to the time I need the wheels I will probably talk details with you.

--------------------------------

I made a sketch for ram air housing that will enclose the intake manifold. I'll post it up in a bit.

As far as the chassis, I might be able to start it this weekend. My uncle has a torch head for my MAP torch. I will use the MAP torch to heat up two tubes of steel, tack welded side by side at the ends, to bend and then probably run a bead down the tubes. After that I will build a box around it.
