I've taken my car up to 110MPH...I must say it felt too slow, felt even slower when I went back down to 70.
Beware speed is a drug and it's very addictive, I should know. When you feel the need to go faster and faster then you know your becoming addicted. When you get irritated that the people in the fast lane passing everybody are going too slow then you know you got problems.

1990 Olds 88 - 110 MPH
1983 Ford Thunderbird - 60 MPH (given to me...POS)
1992 Subaru Legacy - 125 MPH
1988 Formula 350 (still got it) - 140+ MPH (couldn't look at speedo that fast)
1992 Acura Integra - 132 MPH
1992 Honda Prelude - 125 MPH
1994 Mitsubishi 3000GT - 135 MPH easily (saw cop had to abort, he didn't get me on radar till I slowed to 78 though, waiting on clutch to come to try again, hopin for 150 MPH)
wont be satisfied till I hit 200 MPH on the street, most likely in a Diablo.

I have a 2002 Oldsmobile Alero. I got her up to 108 which is the top speed and is governor limited. I thought that I could at least make it to 115, but it was aparent I wasn't gonna go that far when car kept cutting the fuel to the engine...what a bummer. It freaked me out too, because I didn't know that was her limit, so when the car hit 108 and kept bucking, I thought I jacked something up.
I don't ever plan on doing that again. It was fun, but I did it on a stretch of I-25 between Fort Collins, CO and Denver where the roads are absolutely horrible. I was affraid I was gonna hit a huge pot hole, blow a tire, and roll my car.

160mph(ish) in a Lotus Esprit Turbo S4 (not mine) on a german autobahn about three years ago, never been so scared in all my life and it was legal. (no speed limit) Other than that, a Dodge Viper from a certain well known car hire place in LV 144mph in the desert somewhere. the car could have gone faster (obviously) but those things take 110% concetration to drive and are very unforgiving so i chickened out.
Edit - After posting this and reading all the other pages, it disturbs me a great deal the amount of Kids posting on this topic, 14 year olds etc driving at mad speeds through school zones/built up area`s etc like its clever, for a start you aint old enough to be driving, so WTF are you doing behind a wheel of a car, you idiots should be banned from driving for ever. If you are doing things like that now, what will you be doing when you can drive legally, it is people like you that give genuine car enthusiasts a bad name and hike up insurance costs for the rest of us so do us all a favour and stick to your push bikes where you cant kill inoccent people by your recless behavior. A very good friend of mine was driving his new car, an MX-5 (a gift from his folks for graduating with honours) with his girlfriend in the passenger seat, an underage driver pulled out in front of them causing my friend to swerve to avoid hitting him and ultimately roll his car. needless to say it was totalled but the worst thing was that my bud had to go and search for his girlfriends head after she got decapitated in the accident. He currently resides in a nursing home where I think he will stay for the rest of his life as I dont think he will ever recover from that, not a good life for someone who is just 32 years old. So next time you idiots think to taking to the road and being "big " men and showing off to your mates, just think about what you can do to other peoples lives. you should only be doing this shit in the middle of Nowhere with noone else around. Rant over, sorry to everyone but underage drivers really piss me off, there is no way a kid can drive properly, just ask my bud.

Don't be such a moron. Driving Fast is going to be reckless no matter how careful you are. And don't think that insurance companies rate you as a speeder, the same they rate a 16 year old speeder.
At 16 my insurance before an accident on a crap hole 88 Honda Prelude was $265! After one accident that was under $300 it went up to $489. if you had an accident your premium might be around $100 a month depending on your car. So don't think that because a teenager drives fast your rates will be effected. In fact a lot of the statistics on accidents and such are made by insurance companies. There primary function is to find out how much of a risk you as an individual are and then capitalize on it. My Brother is an insurance agent and 7/10 people you look at that have an accident got a ticket within a few month before that time. trust me, the insurance companies are smarter then you think.
And as your Friend, I'm sorry and I agree, with your overall point that reckless teens should be hit harder. But keep in mind, a good driver doesn't swerve. It really just leads to trouble cause you will often smack a car in the other lane and then the guy that illegally cut you off just drives away while your car is totaled. So I'm sorry bout your Friend, but I have to say that swerving is probably the worst habit that every driver, speeder or not, should train themselves out of.
But you are right, i think its awful is someone carelessly speeds through residential, school and such. i always try to limit myself, and while I would say I am tasteful, I never top 35mph in home, 25 in school, and 85mph on freeway. Before my accident I didn't follow that, but I guess i learned my lesson. At any rate a lot of states like California would really like to cut off teenage drivers till they are 18. But I don't think its entirely fair myself. But hey; Life sucks.
And just for the record, there is no difference between "enthusiast" and "Speeder." At least in my opinion
But you are totally right, a little kid can't drive.

gonna disagree with both of you. Kids CAN drive properly (but it's rare).
there is a definate difference in the way "enthusiasts" and "kids" speed.
unfortunately kids driving ability usually isn't the problem, it's the maturaty level and awreness of their surroundings that comes with experience.
I completely agree with picking times and places to speed, not just everywhere all the time.
insurance companies are there to make a profit and their "surveys" are all about helping them make more. A lot of speeding tickets also have very little to do with safety, so saying that people get tickets then get in accidents and its linked is CRAP! I have had two accidents now where people have pulled out in front of me, both times swerving was not an option because of surroundings and my vehicle type, and in neither case was speed at all a contributing factor as i was doing 10 BELOW the speed limit.
Like many people i have gotten speeding tickets, in conditions and locations that could not be considered dangerous, and i have never caused an accident, should my insurance go up so the company can make more money off yet another safe driver?
"Driving fast is going to be reckless no matter how careful you are" FALASY! you're showing your inexperience and lack of knowlege and awareness. You may have noticed nialusa stated he drove on the Autobahn, one of several world motorways without speed limits because their governing authorities realise that speed is NOT the be all and end all of road safety.
another example of your lack of understanding of vehicle dynamics, anyone who says you should limit defensive driving to hitting the brakes is a moron. my friend.
you should know how to handle a car before you're allowed to go out alone. unfortunately, the defining factor of being a kid is being inexperienced and immature. Blaming everything on kids, and ignoring the fact your driving 20 under and not indicating in your 2 tonne rust heap with retreads, no brake lights, and dodgy suspendion on your way home from the bottle shop is ignored, and yet every one of those things is more likely to cause an accident. But i guess the insurance companies don't make money off car maintenance.
FORD did a study similar to the insurance companies, surprise it came out with completely different results, new cars save lives and can be driven faster safer. where do they make their money.
Statistically, the average american, speeding the average amount, would have to drive 100,000 years to die in a car crash. and even then theres only a 7% chance that it would be from ILLEGAL speed. Excessive speed is a whole nother story.

I have to say that when you say you've been in accidnet when people pulled out in front of you; that just one kind of many accidents, and if its like you siad then technically he didn't yeild to you and it wasn't your fault; if you had a cop there you could have gotten off. Also if that happend to you twice, and the company relizes that you are obviosly more of a risk than some one who hasn't had any accidents. But, they are making a profit on you. but a the same time anyone who feels that the insurance companies are evil is'nt thinking clearly; not that you said that, but any one who might be thinking it.
Also by speeding I ussually refer to city streets, cuase thats where most dangerous speeding goes on. I've had car in Lake OFrest come flying in between lanes like a motor cycle does at 50mph when out light just hit green. Some people are just to cocky.

I never said i got in trouble with the police over my accidents. Both times the police turned up cause it was peak traffic and there were intersections blocked, both times i had witnesses (who i didn't know) stating that i was below the speed limit (one time a guy was following me, the other a lady walked up to the police and said she estimated i was doing half the speed limit and it wasn't my fault) and neither time did my insurance have to pay out because i wasn't to blame for the accident. If you are involved in a accident that is completely not your fault you are unlucky, not a risk. At the moment i'm dealing with three insurance companies because my girlfriends car got stolen, having dealt with them before i'm sure you're aware of how much they will try and get away with if possible. They aren't evil, but they are businesses and they are making huge profits. The fact is Insurance companies doing "safety" surveys and advising law changes is biased because it is in their interests to have all cars insured for lots and parked at home, or doing 10kph, this doesn't make them evil, it makes them interested in profit, like most businesses. Thats why you see all these statistics for how much safer the roads are because of speeding enforcement, but they ignore all the safety improvements to cars and roads. in fact, many statistics actually show that the speeding enforcement has had zero, possibly even a negative affect on safety. how many times have you seen speed enforcement on roads where there has never been an accident, and yet where they occur all the time so people go slow theres nothing. Enforcement on benign sections of road where people are likely to speed because of good conditions and visibility is done for no reason other than revenue raising, yes you will catch more people, but the 200 you catch on a straight aren't the ones who will kill someone, its the one that you catch on the blind corner or in the school zone that has an affect on safety.
most "enthusiasts" wont do their driving on city streets. many will go to tracks or cruises. thats probably the difference.
HOWEVER, I dont want to be confused with saying that speeding is always safe or that it's a good idea on city streets, cause it is neither of those things, people should drive responsibly to conditions. That could be 200 in a 100 zone, or 25 in a 50 zone, but it is never always either of those things.

Don't be such a moron. .
You try seeing a good friend go through this kinda thing. My point was about underage idiots thinking they can drive at warp 9 wherever they want.not the insurance prices. and TRD2000. No. kids cant drive properly, they have no experience and skill earned from driving on public highways. But to end on a more posative note you both had some very good points and opinions, I just hope that between us, we can help stop something like this happening to any of you, cause trust me, it aint nice and it will change your life forever..
Oh and swerving is a natural reaction called self preservation, why just simply run into another car when you can "swerve" and avoid an accident all together.
You try seeing a good friend go through this kinda thing. My point was about underage idiots thinking they can drive at warp 9 wherever they want.not the insurance prices. and TRD2000. you mean like my little brother who was in a car his friend was driving and hit a concrete wall at 100+, they both ended up with broken backs, and pretty horrific scarring. He was first draught to play football that year, now he can walk, but thats about all. his friend didn't have a license and was drunk, and obviously had no idea of driving. I know what you're talking about nial, but generalising doesn't solve the problem. Kids CAN drive, but they really need to be taught responsibility and be mature before they should be allowed to drive by themselves.
generalising should be left to polititions and insurance companies, and old farts who can't aknowlege change or reality. too many of those people throw stones at kids from glass houses, because they are an easy and acceptable target, yet i know of a lot of older, mature, and even experienced drivers, who still can't drive and scare the crap out of me that they are allowed on the road, many have taken 30 years and still not worked it out, at least with kids there is hope that they will work out what they are doing wrong.
If i have kids i HOPE that i can teach them to be responsible and mature, and also careful!, before i let them drive on the road. I am fortunate, i've been driving since i was 6, it gives you a chance to learn to drive so when everyone else is learning the car you are just gettiong used to traffic and road rules, so while all the other kids were crashing and trying to show off, i was just driving comfortably. Having had that experience, i'll be doing the same with my kids.
incidentally, my brother was never a car "enthusiast" so he didn't bother to learn to drive when we were young, him and his friends just drove them with no idea what they were doing.
complete agreement Nial, if i just hit the brakes and trained myself out of swerving, i'd have a LOT of accidents. "swerving is the worst thing you can do"? thats the worst thing i've ever hears on accident avoidance.

Fastest Ive ever been was around 98 on the mass pike around 10ish Probably wont ever got that fast again. I slowed down soon after I realized what I going since it was really wet out and I dindt want to crash and kill me or my g/f. I usualy will do about 70-75, sometimes 80 when passing but its just not worth dieing over to have the speed rush. Maby when Im older and more expeiranced and live somewhere open ill try hitting top speeds. But in the area of teen drivers, no teen has the experiance to go that fast, hell we dont even have experiance to go slow. Most of my freinds (and me) have had our only accidents going below the speed limit. Teens just are not experianced enough. When you have logged a couple thousand driving hours and a few years of expierance then you can talk about being a good driver. But no kid in a civic is going to be able to drive like Shumanger, dont care how good they think they are something bad is going to happen.

got a mate that used to drive carts in italy when he was 14. team mate was fisschella. anyway your right, he came third to schumacher in tokyo. Guess no kid can drive after all.
edit.
sorry shouldn't have written this, just that i know lots of kids who crash below the speed limit thinking they are good, and i also know some that can actually drive, unfortunately lots of kids come unstuck by thinking they can drive when they really can't, or by trying to copy what their friends who have been driving for ages do. That ended up being what slowed me down, friends trying to show off, go faster, slide further... whenever i did something "stupid" but that i knew i could do cause i'd done heaps before, a friend would try it with different conditions or different car.... couple of times they crashed and i figured i'd better stop setting a bad example. too many kids just follow or copy without being able to make the decision properly for themselves....
for the record. for better or worse (i think better) my mum used to let me drive up to 160 (100mph) when i had my learner license. As i said i was already used to driving, I dont know that i'd do it with my kids, but it meant i had someone with me when i was learning to drive fast and i got used to it. My dad used to get me to drift his tacoma on gravel roads, and try and get me to lose it so i'd get a better idea of control and slippery conditions. All in all, i'm probably alive because of all the conditions and experience i got well outside the bounds of normal learner driving that most kids do.

My dad would let me drive the van in the snow when I was learning. I crashed cause I hit black ice in a RWD car, not much you can do on a small road with fences. Cept maby hit the fence. This year I know to be more careful. And I agree drivers ed classes should teach more about conditions we drive in not go forward, go back. But slipry weather and snow and ice, espicaly here in newengland. And congrats to your freind but I think track racing is a differnt area then the streets.

drivers Ed is a whole bunch of crap. they should just have the driving time with a nongovernent (like it is now) insturctor time increased, thats where I learned everything.
But ack to the insurance companies. explain to me why insurance is cheaper on my car in the city of San Clemente California than it is in Tustin California? On the other hand I have no idea what state your living in, i guess farmers Insurance quates by Credit score in some states using your social security number, but in CA its definityly a lot of statistics.

I took drivers ed with my 12 hours of driving (6 behind wheel 6 observing) in a total of 6 days. I did not learn anyting new, I learned better while driving the van and crown vic around with my parents. I wasnt allowed to drive solo untill they thought I had enough driving experiance. Which is probably why Im still alive and not in a twisted hunk of metal. In Mass at least your suposed to have your parents sign a peice of paper that says that you logged 100 copilot hours. But so many parents just dont bother or the kid fakes it. We really need a better system.

I had a '78 Trans Am a number of years ago- it had a moderately built 462 motor with a 2.73 posi (pretty funny, huh).
Right around the same time, a friend of mine had an 5.0 Mustang GT that topped out around 125 (conv).
I could walk past him at his top speed, while I still had another 1500 RPM left. After several runs, we had guessed around 155.
that's my story, and I'm stickin' to it....155.

I hit 120 in my 96' Mustang Cobra. But at that speed, I could feel air starting to seep in around the closed convertible top so I slowed down.

115mpg in my old 90 Buick Park Avenue the front end was about to shake off. The fastest was 120mph in a 93 SOHC non-vtec civic 4 door, I was test driving it and the owner said take it for a 1 hour and just bring it back in one piece, it only had a intake and muffler.

I've done about 320km/h that's 200mph in a Porsche 996 turbo on an airstrip :)
On a standard road I've "only" been up to 260km/h thas about 162mph.

we have on country road in the county where the speed limit is 35 (freaking 35!) and it has this wonderful half mile stretch perfectly flat and straight, like a drag strip. i'm a wimp, so i hit 100 and stopped, but if you knew my car (92 stanza 2.4 sohc OD automatic) you'd be surprised.

I've only had my learners for 6 months so i can't go on freeways or drive alone but i was in the car with my sis, 97 honda accord v6, she went around 180. It's funny, her car is a pontiac 6000le (nicknamed gooly) and her speedo tops out at 130kph so half the time she doesn't know how fast she's going.
