Belt tensioner jumps HELP !!!
I have a 1996 Sonoma with a 2.2 4 cyl 5 speed in it. The belt tensioner chatters every time I put the engine under a load. If I lug it down a bit then step on the gas or just shift gears then give it a little gas, it makes the tentioner jump up and down against the spring pressure about 1/4 to 1/2 inch very fast. It tore up one tentioner already. I replaced it with a new one from GM, which is a Gates. It has a brand new Goodyear belt on it. All the bolts are tight. It still does it. Has anyone else ever run into this, or know what would cause this or would fix it????????? Also, the engine has a slight knock, that gets better as it gets warmer but never completely goes away. I have had 3 - 2.2 engines that have done this. I have been told that this is a trait of the 2.2. Is this true? If it is, is there any way to make it stop? THANKS !!!

maybe you have a bad pully?? or the shaft attached to a pully is bent.. the 2.2 engine is crap, it is very underpowered for a rearwheel drive vechicle but they also warp heads and blow headgaskets like crazy, next timeit goes drop in a smallblock or even a 4.3.. but if you really wanted to you could get a copper headgasket and a higher flow waterpump that might help you out a bit if the smallblock is outta range for you..
