Re: Blowers???

There are different types. The Paxton type is more like a belt driven turbo with gear drives inside. The turbine spins really fast, like 50-60K r.p.m. It's good for high rpm boost and really isn't good for low speed power, but this type can make as much as 30psi and fits under hoods nicely.
Go to your nearest Pontiac dealer and look under the hood of a Grand Prix GTP. They have 3.8 V-6 engines that are super charged from the factory. A friend of mine has one and it is a fast s.o.b., probably close to 300 h.p. He (and I) has done many mods to gain power and I can honestly say that it will easily walk away from an LS1 Z28. That charger design has two big vanes inside the housing that push the air into the engine. Rotor ratio on that design is between 2:1 and 3:1, depending on the ratio of the little drive pulley (12K to 18K rotor rpm at 6k engine rpm). His boost is somewhere around 20 psi.
For my blown Biscayne, I have the big 671 charger. The blower case is almost as big as the engine block. I have it geared at 1:1. When the engine is turning 5ks, the internal rotors are too. The rotors are twisted like two big screws that are meshed together. It makes for a smoother air discharge without the pulsation of a straight rotor design. Power delivery is instant with no difference between low or high rpm. It will make 6psi of boost from idle and might run up to 6 1/2 psi at rev limit.
One thing to keep in mind is that good quality low boost (6 psi) will make more power than high pressure boost (30 psi) that is not cooled off before it enters the engine (that's where inter coolers come in).
Your best bet is to find a wrecked GTP and get the whole top of the engine, throttle cable, ecm, and harness. If you don't know what you're doing, find someone who does. If the whole system is not tuned properly, it will grenade a good engine. That's why they are called "blowers", it'll make your engine go "BOOM".

Re: Blowers???

ok, not to contradict tex here, but you cant just swap the blower and top end to the NA 3.8, they are wayyy different, pistons, cams, heads, obviously intakes, you have to swap the whole engine, wiring harnes, and computer. only easy part is that it should bolt right in, but you do have to replace just about everything that deals with the engine. you might be able to reuse your original block, i dont know if there is a different bolt pattern for fwd or rwd blocks.

Re: Blowers???

Isn't that what I said, 89? The whole top of the engine, ecm, and harness? The 3.8 Camaro's are fly-by-wire and the GTPs use a cable. Yes there might be similarities and differences but a 3.8 is a 3.8. I know that the old Buick 3.8 is different than the new Camaro 3.8 too, but Sam didn't say exactly what year model. Some parts might need machining or have some fabricating done to make everything work, but most of the stuff is just nuts and bolts anyway. A typical situation of a narrow focus. One is rear wheel drive and one is f.w.d., but both cars are G.M., I know I could make it work. My blower case came straight off of a dump truck and it adapted quite easily to the 406 s.b.
The pic of that blower looks almost like what I have in my Biscayne except mine has 16 injectors and it's not mechaincal injection.

Yes, a blower is a supercharger. works on pulleys basically unlike a turbo which works on exhaust gasses.

Re: Blowers???

ok tex, missed that, but you did forget to say the pistons and cam, which are important to include in that swap, or so i was told by the guy at work who put the supercharged 3.8 in his oldsmobile alero.

Turbocharge it......

Another thing to think about as far as high boost vs. low boost is that 30 PSI can be just as good of "quality" as 6 PSI. The challege is getting it back to ambieant temp. Intercoolers are so important to a forcefed engine. The problem with getting 30 PSI back to temp. is that is usually takes one hell of a liquid to air intercooler.

Re: Blowers???

Good description Zwrangler, even my mom would be proud of you for that one.
I know 89IROC, to be blown, it needs low compression and a "blower" cam would optimize the potential of the whole combination. I researched a lot of specifics when I built my blower set up. I don't think Sam had any intentions of getting into the internals of his engine. Looks like he wanted something simple to bolt on, as we all do.

The turbo idea is good. That would be free power, sort of, but the waste gate would have to be turned down pretty low for a stock block. A turbo and a Paxton can both be plumbed quite easily but what percentage of those actually run an inter cooler.
I could tell the difference between the inlet and the discharge temperatures of an intercooler just by putting my hands on it. My Dodge Cummins had a huge intercooler. After tweeking the waste gate, it would make right at 30 psi. The sound of the turbo and the monstrous torque, I sure do miss that thing.
