Heater blower and a/c blower problem

Yesterday when I got into the vehicle I had the blower on full blast but it only blew very light for at least 4 blocks then it cut in and started blowing full blast, if I change mods say from windshield to floor it takes at least 2 minutes before it starts blowing again.this has been doing this on and off for a while.
The other problem I have is on the highway when I put cruise control on my blower quits and of course starts blowing again when I shut off the cruise. I Dont know if these problems are related.
Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks............scotty

Don't know what year your escort is but if it's a '91-'96 change the resistor. it's right next to the blower motor inside the passenger compartment. it's a common component that fails on these cars. Other than that I'd say you might have a vacuum problem.

On my Escort ('93) the first problem I had was a bad connection at the motor. One of the two wires connecting to the motor was burnt. This is caused over a long period by power arcing across a bad connection. That's what this problem sounds like to me. If you have good connections there then it could be the motor is worn out. Typically IF a resistor assembly goes bad it will only affect one motor speed and will not affect hi-speed. Anyway, have a look at those connections.

Mine is a '93 and I have a ghost problem that is similar and to make matters worse the wipers also cut out. I have traced the problem back to the ignition switch. I have had the entire dash out and even went as far as using a megohm meter to check out every conductor that comes out with the dash and every conductor that stays in the body that is associated with the wipers and blower circuit. The only common point that I was able to find was the key switch. I never did figure out how to get the damned thing out.Both myself and my father have a bad habbit of having rediculously large amounts of keys, although not enough to be janitors
If it is just the the blower, check the resistors. It could possibly be the blower failing depending on the age and usage, the motors use non-replacable brushes.
