Unhappy a/c blower switch or blower motor?

I've got a '97 GTP and like alot of fellow owners I've got problems with my a/c blower. I've just within the past 10 minutes changed my blower resistors and it hasn't helped. Whenever I turn my a/c switch on the daytime running lights and the information center go completely off and the rear defroster switch (which is located in the a/c switch panel) will not activate the defroster. The a/c blower doesn't work until I put it on setting 5. Then the daytime running lights and information center come on but are very dim and the defroster still won't come on. But the blower works and runs great! Like I said earlier, I've just replaced the resistors with AC Delco parts so I know their good. Could it be the a/c blower switch or what? This didn't happen all at once, the other settings would work but gradually got to where they would go off while the a/c was running. Any ideas or information would very much appreciated!!

Re: a/c blower switch or blower motor?

If you changed the resistor I would start by replacing the fan motor. Had to do that in my GTP as the motor actually went bad and damaged the resistor. There may be other problems so you might as well replace the switch at the same time. If this doesn't help you may need to get a wiring diagram and see where these circuits are to check to see if there is a short in the system. I checked the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual but I really couldn't see any interconnection of any of the circuits in the system. Good luck in finding the problem. Oh yea! I bought a used fan for $25 from a salvage yard. It works perfectly.

Re: a/c blower switch or blower motor?

Thanks GTP Dad for the help. That's what I thought someone was gonna say. I've been out in the car pretty much all afternoon and read the owners manual a couple of hundred times (and the fuse section begins on 6-66 appropriately enough). And the crazy thing is that on the fuse labeled DIC/HVAC is responsible for rear defog, HVAC, Driver Information Center, daytime running lights, and heated seats (which I don't have). All of these things are affected whenever I turn the a/c switch on. Since I wrote the last post I've pulled the dash and checked the switch once again. I can eventually by disconnecting the harnesses to the main board on the panel and the switch itself make the a/c work like new. But however whenever I let the car sit with the ignition off for about 10 min. it does the same old crap. Well anyway if anyone has any other ideas please give 'em to me. Meanwhile I'll be replacing motors and switches.

Re: a/c blower switch or blower motor?

OK, after replacing the a/c switch, blower motor and the resistors. Guess what the problem was... ...give up?
THE FREAKIN IGNITION SWITCH!!
Well, I hope we've all learned something from this I know I have. That whenever there's an electrical problem in your Grand Prix, there's really no darn telling what's wrong with it. Oh by the way, I accidentally found my problem after remote starting my car to check the clutch under the hood. Went around to the driver side after about 5 minutes of run time and it was frigid in the car. Info. center, etc. was all working including, yes, the 3rd speed on the a/c.

Im having pretty much the same problem with my 98 grand prix..last night I turned the heat on and when I switched to #5 it would come on but on no other setting, when I did turn it to another setting the headlights would go off but no fan running! The ac and heat only work on the highest setting.

Re: a/c blower switch or blower motor?

Well welcome to the club kitten! I swear just when I thought I had it figured out "it" wasn't the problem. I hope you have better, quicker, and less expensive luck than I did.
