engine stalls after warm start

I have a 95 Explorer Sport and when I start the engine while it's warm I have to give it a little gas as well as keep my foot on the gas to hold the rmp's around 1000 for several seconds before putting into gear. Sometimes even that doesn't keep the engine running and as soon as I let off the gas the rpm's plummet, usually causing the engine to stall. On a cold start I don't have this problem. First start of the day the engine fires up no problem, I don't have to give it any gas and the rpm's stay strong. I'm trying to sell this truck so I don't want to put a ton of money in it, but I don't want to sell someone a truck that's going to be stalling on them, either. Not to mention it's a bit hard to convince someone to buy something that won't stay running! Any thoughts?

Throttle plate needs cleaning?
Air intake not functioning properly?
Bad vacuum hose?
Bad sensor?
Piece of crap Ford?

Re: engine stalls after warm start

Have you tried testing the Intake Air temp sensor? Or the Idle Air Control motor? Check those two. I checked the IAC by removing it and plugging it in and having someone else turn on the ignition. My other method was to remove it, compress it, and then plug it back ing, but that's not necessarily recommended. For the IAT, Just hook up an ohmmeter to it and change the temp around it by bringing it inside and see if the resistance changes. Hope that helps

I have the same exact problem. I replaced my IAC Valve and it is still doing the same thing. Have you found out what the problem is??

Or does anybody else have a solution (s).

Check the recall history. Explorers had a recall for timing chain problems.
do you have MIL codes P0301 and or P0174?

I don't have any codes showing up. I also checked for recalls. I had all of the recalls fixed. The one to the timing chain doesn't apply to me.

This a common problem with explorers. Most often caused by a vacuum leak. Often this caused by a leaking intake manifold gasket or a stuck EGR. I have a 2000 4.0 sohc that had the same problem. I had to replace the manifold gaskets. Good luck let us know what you find.
