Revell 1/25 69 Yenko Camaro - Reissue!

Yep, its confirmed. The one that started it all, Revell's excellent '69 Yenko Camaro (and the ONLY one of Revell's '69 Camaro series that had the standard, non-rally Sport grille) is to be reissued in the 4th quarter of 2003.

If you want to build ANY '69 Camaro with the standard grille, or the Lemans Blue one from 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS, you'll want to have at least one of these.

I reviewed this kit for SCALE AUTO ENTHUSIAST back when it was issued in the early '90s for my STRICTLY STOCK column that used to be a feature of the magazine, and I was blown away by how really good the kit was. It remains one of my favorite 1/25 scale model kits to this day.

Finally! I can`t wait to get one. They were going for a small fortune on Ebay.
By the way, my 69 RS kit came with two grilles, the one with hidden headlights and the standard grille. I must agree, the Revell Camaro kit is excellent!!

That is true - Revell's Z-28 RS did have the grille unit (not mentioned in the instructions) but not the headlight buckets/bezels. I think they still had the lenses on the clear tree but without the bezels they were off to the spares box anyhow.

Great that the Yenko is coming back. I really didn't want to pay the Fred Cady price for those decals when Revell did the stripes accurately.

On a side note, good to see you here Mr. Greenberg. The disappearance of your column was one of the reasons I cancelled my SAE subscription.

Thanks so much for that. STRICTLY STOCK was a labor of love for me, and it's always good to know that it was appreciated by the people I wrote it for - my fellow modelers. I've received many e-mails expressing similar sentiments in the two years since I severed all associations with Kalmbach Publishing. I'm grateful to this day for that support.

MODEL CARS has the passion, the enthusiasm, the "by modelers for modelers" feel that SAE used to have before it became Kalmbach-ized. It's a pleasure to help Gregg grow the magazine. He is truly one of us - an avid modeler, and a major league car enthusiast!

Kalmbach, on the other hand, has no enthusiasm for anything but advertising revenues. All of their magazines, from SAE to FSM to MR to Bead and Button - use the same "formula". The content is tied to their advertisers and not to their readers. The contents of each
"feature" of Kalmbach's magazines, in this writers opinion, is soulless, without spirit, gusto, passion, or enthusiasm. It is entirely apropos that Kalmbach surgically excised the name "Enthusiast" from the magazine's masthead. If there are no enthusiasts behind the magazine, the magazine will show no enthusiasm. My opinion is now as it was then, that their "business model" - not to mention their arrogance and disdain for the readership of their publications - is inherently - and perhaps, as I believe, fatally - flawed.

Don't expect SA to return to anywhere near its former greatness unless it is sold back to Gary Schmidt or to another enthusiast entrepreneur and is the hell away from Kalmbach Publishing.

MCM, however, is a good read. You can feel that the people contributing to it LOVE THE HOBBY. You won't get false information about a product from MCM out of management's paranoid fear of upsetting an advertiser. You'll get the truth about a product, about an event, about how to do things - and everything about MCM is not done to placate an advertiser. Its done for the modeller, the people who buy and read the magazine. And that's not me shilling for MCM. Thats the truth.

The kit comes with the bezels, all 5 of my Revell 69 Camaro's come with them..

Anyways, I'll probably get one of these! Glade they decided to re-issue this one!

I agree with you on Model Cars. It's a lot of fun to read and I like the fact that now I get to read reviews on ALL sorts of kits as opposed to just factory stock.

The emphasis was taken away from maintaining the ideal that model cars are as much an adult hobby as they are a children's pasttime. SA went from modification, accurazation, and history to becoming a diecast "piece of the month" newsletter.

And, I'm sorry, but Loren Bussewitcz (I probably misspelled his name, honestly I don't care) absolutely SUCKS as a reviewer. He rambled on for NINE paragraphs about how popular the Tri-Five Chevies are before he even MENTIONED Revell's 1956 Del Rey.

I like Model Cars. All I hope for is that it'll maybe grow into a monthly. Other than that, it's good stuff. I particularly liked the Revell Austin Coupe review. Funny.

Yeah, I kinda got a kick out of that Austin "Coupe" review too

MCM is a fine example, like the old pre-Kalmbach SAE, of how good a magazine can be when the people who run it not only know their audience, they're part of that audience. Gary Schmidt, SAE's former owner and publisher, is a great guy and an enthusiast in the true sense of the word. Not only a model car enthusiast, but a real car enthusiast as well. He owns a beautiful '63 Galaxie 500XL 427 convertible and a Grabber Blue '70 Boss 429 - 1/1 scale - among others. Gregg is famous for his custom Ranchero, and now he is tooling around Hawaii in a new Audi A4 Quattro.

One thing I learned in 21 years of writing for magazines is that model car enthusiasts are not necessarily real car enthusiasts, and real car enthusiasts are not necessarily model car enthusiasts. I am - and many of us here and out there in the world are - both a real and a model car enthusiast. SAE was about that. SA is not. Kalmbach does not get it. They never will. The hell with them, then.

MCM picked up where the old SAE left off. Yeah, it is a fun read. Its even more fun to write for, since now I don't have journalistic handcuffs on - and Gregg would never do that to me. Gary didn't either. To them the hobby came first, and it shows. And that deserves support.

Just because a publication says it is about "model cars" but doesn't do their homework, doesn't know it's audience and doesn't really care to, shills for its advertisers instead of catering to the reader, and most importantly, comes across with the arrogant attitude that they OWN the hobby outright and if they catch a cold YOU sneeze, does NOT deserve our support in any way, shape, or form.

You know what's funny? Readership of SA is down tremendously. Subscriptions are down tremendously. Advertising is down tremendously. Page count is down tremendously. AND THEY STILL DON'T GET IT AND DON'T SEEM TO WANT TO GET IT! Now THAT's funny.
