RPM to change gear?
hi
i´m very new to all this tunning & racing stuff. i have an automatic 94 civic LX and would like to know, what RPM is the best to change gears for racing. remember, since it´s an automatic transmision, it has only 4 gears. Mods? till now, only a new sound system. first i have to finish all repairs (not many) and install an alarm |

Since it's an auto, do you think it really matters?

its an automatic transmission meaning that it will change the gears automaticlly and you don't have to worry about it. just smash the pedal and go.

I'd say zero rpms. I think the engine should be OFF before attempting to open the transmission to change the gears.
(If you go that far, recommend just swaping in a manual tranny.)

Unless your one of the people who like to shift the car themselves pretending they have an automatic. Like going 1 2 then d3, and d4.

I don't believe it matters either way. It's just that the automatic shifter is designed to be less stressful on your engine. So if you want to ultimatly shorten your engine life go for it. But you will look like an ass to anyone that sees you doing it.

Downshifting an auto is no good, you can upshift all you want. Just dont hold it on a low gear for a long time. When you hold the gear too long then shift, thats bad for the trans. Results in a hard shift which feels cool, but no good for the tranny.
Manual valve body tranny's need to be upshifted & downshifted every time. This is what you see in some race car(mostly drag). That type of trans every day on the street worn get torn up very quickly. |

thanks
i meant manually shifting my automatic car (1, 2, d3, d4) - and it´s for racing only. for normal, everyday driving, i prefer the automatic shift. JDMAccordLX, i´ll try shifting at 5500 - thnx |

How about this. lets all stop arguing about how to shift an automatic, and just tell him to either sell his car and buy a manual or do a manual swap. Because if he is going to start getting into the whole racing tuning thing he is gonna need one sooner or later ne way.
