Getting rear drums off a Clio

Can anyone tell me how to remove the rear drums on a 1.2 Clio (1999) to access the brake adjustment? There's just a plain disc as a dustcap and no obvious means of removing it! Thanks!

If you could post a pic it would be good, but on all drums iv ever worked on, theres either one or two small retianing screws, or the drum just sits over the shoes and is held on by the wheel.
If so you may need to tap it off with a rubber or brass hammer, or there will be some small taped holes in it you can wind a bolt into to force the drum off.


However, you have fairly recent model car, and self adjusting brakes have been around a lot longer then the Clio has.
How sure are you they need adjusting manualy?

Thanks for the reply. There's nothing obvious like bolts holding the drum on, or threaded holes for a bolt to ease the drum off. Just a plain drum with a blank plate in the centre, which seems to have a hard rubber seal under it. I tried the usual big hammer and old screwdriver under this, but no joy.. I thought of the auto adjustment, but pumping the brake and the handbrake doesn't improve the pedal. Handbrake needs some adjustment and pedal is getting down.. Of course, the front pads may be a bit worn.., but I need to check the rear drum brakes.. I'll give it another, bigger whack..

You mentioned a rubber plug. These plugs are often present in brake drums. If you remove it and have a adjusting spoon, you can adjust the brake without removing the drum. The plug is to prevent water from entering the brake. As far as removal is concerned, often the shoes wear a lip into the drum and need to be backed off before the drum can be removed. If this is the case, you can remove the plug and adjust the shoes so you can easily remove the drum.

i work at a renault dealer in belgium
we just remove one of the wheel bolts to adjust the rear breaks
with a flashlight and a small screwdriver
when you want to remove the drums it could be possible that there's an edge on the drums that knocks against the brakes so one persone is going to have to brake while the otherone adjusts the brakes . when you try to remove the drums without doing this you'll force the brakes and you'll be needing other
the pedal that is getting larger could be your pumps leaking brakefluid. i hope you got a bit whiser and sorry for my english if it's bad
