Re: 97 Lumina, Randomly wont crank,

Thanks, I will report back with the outcome of tests.

I have already tried a jumper from A2 to C1 with no effect.

It's just hard when the problem comes and goes. I have to hook up the test light, test it, then put the relay back in and hope it does not start (meaning the problem is still present). Driving around with the glove box out and tools all over the floor is a fun experience. But at least every time it wont start means that I'm one test closer to tracking down the issue.

Hope you have a good thanksgiving. Thanks for the help.

Re: 97 Lumina, Randomly wont crank,

I have the exact same problem with my 97 and have for about 10 years. I first changed the starter but that is all. I recently ran a jumper with a push button from the battery to the solenoid and when it wouldn't turn over I put the key in the on position and pushed the button which started the car but it would only run for a few seconds and then shut off. Let me know if you figure anything out. I too would like to by pass it all to make it start regardless if it is in gear or not.

Re: 97 Lumina, Randomly wont crank,

Bit the bullet and bought a bypass box from newrockies (dot) com . I actually bought the DIY instructions and made it myself (Would not recommend for cold climates_. The Full bypass box that you get from them will work in cold climates but some of the DIY electronics aren't rated for that cold. Anyway, drop the glove box out and the TDM (theft deterrent module)is tucked up in there. That is your problem. Its a POS system with planned obsolescence to bring in 800$ to their service departments. The bypass box is $170 I think, DIY instructions are $37, Pretty good support for both and %100 return policy.
