For those who have been waiting for the Minichamps 1:18 GTR and 1:12 road car releases there's bad news; they are postponed again, this time to October. :(
I hope the coming AutoArt release of the road car has increased the pressures to make those 1:18 models more detailed than the old UT/Minichamps GTRs, not just re-realising the old ones with just minor upgrades like added brake calipers seen on the prototypes.
Another delay...Not good.
Would it be out on sale maybe year 2020?

Shame about the delay on the Minichamps models but possibly a good thing as I'm not flush with coin at the moment :(. I am interested however in the 1:18 GTR models and are wondering which GTRs they are releasing? Had a look on Minichamps website but cant find anything.
EDIT: my mistake, just found them-hope its them?
The two Gulf cars and the Lark cars from Le Mans 1997 and 01R. Anyone know how much they might be sold for? Tempted to buy all four...I dont have any McLaren F1s at the moment, they're quite rare in my neck of the woods and when they do pop up they're quite expensive so this might be my way of starting a collection.

Correct find! Their MRSP seems to be about 90 EUR, but on many UK models shops they seem to be around 65-70 GBP on pre-order, including VAT and shipping excluded.

Yep, around 80-100€ is the price, that's what the seller in Finland told me.

By the time they end up in Australia they'll maybe around $2-300 AUD, hopefully not more.
Forgive my newbie question (havent brought a model for ages and dont have a lot of experience with Minichamps) but hopefully these arent sealed shells are they? I like my models to have opening doors and such so I can check out the detail...

Out of curiousity, what are the Autobarn models worth (not necessarily your ones, but in general)?
hurstg01
06-04-2010, 04:36 PM
Hi Paul
In my experience it depends on the model, who else wants it as much as much as you at the same time as you, and it depends on the seller as to how much they want for it.
The most I have paid is for the sets of 2 models on a special plinth in a special display case, the cheapest is under £65.00. Some sell for $249, some sell for less, some alot more. If there has been an influx of a particular model on eBay for example, it dilutes the market so latter listings can be had for cheaper despite the seller wanting more as they have seen what previous models go for. I just make sure I get them for as cheap as possible :). Also, make sure they are built by autobarn; some are built by modellers using autobarn kits, which sell for less. The quality of the models in this instance are nearly as good as the autobarn-made ones, but the finish of the models is lacking in details and care.
Just my :2cents:

Just trying to add my :2cents:
There are lots of those "AutoBarn" Macs on eBay that are built by some "no name" builders with very varying quality; sometimes you may get a very decent build, almost the factory level, and then some other time almost complete crap. So always ask better images before bidding if you are not willing to throw money out of the window. In couple of occasions I have bought double, and getting just one decent model, the other not so good or even crap.
Then there are those kits built by well-known builders to much above the factory level, maybe even with scratch-built additional detailing. The value of these may even go above 1000 USD, depending on the builder and the work done. They popup very rarely on places like eBay, more likely on other professional model sellers of similar items or even specialized live auctions.
The Japanese model stores Raccoon and Romu also have their own lines of AB kit based McLarens and they are also done to even better standard than the original factory built ones, and sometimes to even better accuracy. They are built by very skilled builders, and sometimes even some better known ones. These typically cost some 50% more than the factory builts but they are made in smaller quantities, typically below 30. These rarely popup on eBay but a bit more frequently on Yahoo! auctions in Japan.
On the factory builts the prices on eBay depend on many different factors so it is hard to say anything general. It is just how badly the bidders are wanting that particular model and how they trust the seller. I have seen some go even above 650 USD (one limited edition of 25 street car in 2006) or some just around 100 USD (in good condition) as they were not listed as AutoBarns but those who know them better, could have made a good bargain on those. Last year I got one such for only 53 GBP! :)

Unfortunately for my wallet, I've recently been buying the 1:18 UT Mclarens. I had a couple from when I was little (XP1LM, and a Silver F1 Roadcar). Recently I've obtained the #24 Gulf, and #51 Harrods GTR's, and I have the black GT longtail on the way. When I get the GT in I might start taking some photos. The only other model I'm really anxious about getting is #01R. Seems it's a hard one to get!

Sorry chiming in prematurely but this is a huge thread. Could someone simply tell me who makes the most accurate Mclaren f1 model representation that has nice detail regardless of size. I can't believe the doors don't even open on the new 1/8th scale model at such a hefty price. I understand if the doors don't open on any suggested models. Can someone help please?
Thank you,
Daniel

Hmmm well, UT models 1/18 are detailed well. And they are quite wanted ones today. I have couple of them #01R, #03R, #06R, #21R and XP1 LM and I can recomend the UT very highly. They arent perfect on the detail; DOC can explain more closely this case; and we have to remember they are over 10 years an old models, which productions have been ended long time ago.
But still they look good, the scale is right and the detailing is high. Only bad thing is they need lots of room on the self, but other way they look stunning.
Here is an example of XP1 LM's detailing, made by UT:
http://kuvablogi.com/nayta/prev/img2436893.jpg
And here is the #12R by UT. It just simply looks stunning:
http://kuvablogi.com/nayta/prev/img2436880.jpg
What comes to the prices; well over 100€/£/$ is much, but still it could be even higher. I think 80-120€/£/$ is quite good price of these. Of course there is many of them 150-200 on sale, but is it worth? XP1 LM's are atleast 3 different versions and the rarest ones are over 250 atleast....
But anyway; if you want good looking models, not mather the small detail erros compared to an orginal GTR's and not mather the needed space of the models; these are very nice indeed.
What comes to the 1/43 scale models; no open doors or hatches. Unfortunately. Atleast Mincihamps and IXO and Autobarn. But ofcourse, if you have money; you will get one 1/43 which has these open doors and hatches, but it's much much more expensive.
My self; I still waiting the 1/18 Minichamps #01R to be come on sale, expected it should have good detailing, but.....
Hope this helped you atleast small way. :)

If you need to find the most accurate you first have to define the scale you want. Otherwise you end up to 1:1 scale and that's costly! ;)
Those Amalgam 1:8 models are the most detailed and most accurate but as you noted, don't have the opening doors etc. If you really want them, UT's 1:18 models are quite good in accuracy but lack the details compared to newer models, e.g. the forthcoming AutoArt release. Also the 1:12 Minichamps has good accuracy and is quite well detailed and are only a fraction of the prices of the Amalgam models.
In 1:43 scale the best ones are AutoBarns and Minichamps. AutoBarns are resin kit based handbuilt models and so have more and better details than the diecast models of Minichamps. AutoBarns retail price is around 250 USD but the prices in second hand markets depend heavily on the "needs" of the market, some can be had for around 100 USD and some may require even above 500 USD to get it. The same goes to Minichamps race versions on the second hand markets, the BPR'95 West model topping the price range maybe around 700 USD currently. The Minichamps street cars can be had for around 20 USD or even less as they have been produced in too large quantities considering the markets.
Almost all 1:43s are so called curbside models, no opening features. There are also some kits (Renaissance, Provence Moulage) to make high detail models with opening doors etc. but they are very pricey as built ones as they need professional skills to built them up. Renaissance Super Integral kits are the most detailed and the most labourous, finished ones are going well above 1000 USD if built by a professional, even 5000 USD if built by a top professional.
So it is more what kind of price range are you planning and what you can get with that money.
I hope this provided at least some kind of guidance. :)

Romu (http://www.romu-romu.com) has started to take reservations for the HPI 1/43 longtail F1 GTRs. Maybe the most interesting of these will be the 1997 Presentation (http://www.romu-romu.com/item/10013.html) of the 19R. Others will be LM'97 Lark (27R), LM'98 Loctite (22R) and the orange 27R. There is no mentioning if they have the engine details or not.
Found a gallery of the Presentation Livery - it looks fantastic! Click the pic to see more:

There's also orange (http://picasaweb.google.com/hpisales21/8193McLarenF1GTRPlainColorModelOrange#), black chrome (http://picasaweb.google.com/hpisales21/8195McLarenF1GTRBlackMetalPolishModel#), and white (http://picasaweb.google.com/hpisales21/8194McLarenF1GTRPlainColorModelWhite#).

KRW models (http://www.krwmodels.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=65_698&zenid=iiaa3k2pjek8udvvenfn8ov593) also lists Suzuka 1998 #15 (Davidoff) and Suzuka 1997 #27 (Parabolica) to come from HPI in the future. I hope those will also have the correct front winglets, and not plain like the orange (http://cgi.ebay.com/1-43-HPI-Racing-Mclaren-F1-GTR-Plain-Color-Model-Orange-/250705372798?pt=Diecast_Vehicles&hash=item3a5f34667e) (27R) without them. This one (http://cgi.ebay.com/McLaren-F1-GTR-GT-Long-Tail-Car-27R-2005-1-43-Orange-/190449540216?pt=Diecast_Vehicles&hash=item2c57ad5c78) has them correctly as 27R was at Goodwood 2005. Also to be seen if HPI will have the small winglets on the LM'97 models like IXO has them (correctly).

Sami, I can say at least their earlier 1/43 diecasts have been good. I have their 1998 Le Mans winner 911 GT1 with the engine details and it is really nice, but you really have the see it live as the pictures (http://www.hpimodelcar.com/en/line_up/index_8050.php) don't do it so well (they had earlier even better HD pictures there). Sadly these longtail GTRs are just curbsides, no opening panels, but I hope the build quality has stayed at least the same.

Doc Thanks again. Seems very profesional manufacturer indeed. I can't really wait to get it. There are one and two specific models what must get, one was defenitely this Presentation #19R, now only missing #01R presentation livery.
Man....Now just hope that this same manufacturer would do the #01R presentation livery....this same very reasonable price!

This is my first post on this forum/site so I thought I'd start by saying hello!
Been reading threads in this particular section on and off for a while, decided it was finally time to join in since like many of you I am a McLaren nut. Definitely my favorite car of all time by a good margin.
I just went through every page of this particular thread last night and was wondering if there is a comparative thread for RC models. I did a search and didn't come up with much.
Part of the reason I ask as I have a pretty decent sized McLaren F1 RC collection and was wondering if I should start a new thread or contribute to an existing one that I might have missed.

and
That 56XPGT model a few posts back - is that a custom '97 GTR model or a legit purchasable model? Would love one of those but never seen a proper GT model before...?

It is a proper 56XPGT model as from its early days, not a GTR'97 modification. The maker is "pdStudio" and sold on eBay by a seller "myarche". They are a small series handbuilts of resin body, quality is close to Spark/Red Line models. They offer a quite good quality/detail ratio for the price, but could be improved in the built quality.

Romu has just released 1/43 Lucky Models open/close JGTC 1996 LARK #60/61. #60 is limited to 200 pieces, #61 to 100, and they can also be had as two car set (LE50). Click images to get to their pages for more pictures:

I would have hoped they had the Motorsport in detail vol. 9 CD to make them even more correct as there are still lots of details done wrong or even missing, especially in the engine bay. Still quite nice for the price.

colour is all wrong. Red should be Rocket Pink and I'd say the Metallic Grey is too light.
I did order a long tail on ebay (not Minichamps, but cant remember who) a while backand the pink was red. looks bad next to my Minichamps short tail
Minichamps is close and GF Williams' images on the GTR livery thread are close.

Hi Andy,
How close would you think the Minichamps short tail LARK is to what it should be?
I have both Minichamps LARKs and the both, old and new (ACO) version of the long tail and there's a clear difference between the long tails, newer being lighter, much more to the yellow end of the shade, older being closer to the short tail's color. I also have the AutoBarn's short tails, which were made by using old printed photographs (books and magazines) as the reference and they are too much to the orange. Also I have those made out of kits with the Raccoon's Fluorescent Pink paint (which should be the closest there is) with the Romu's deluxe decals and that color combo is the closest to those GF Williams' recent images when seen live. I have tried to photograph them in different lightings but turns out this is the hardest color of all the Macs to get into the photos such that it is even a close match to what they really are. Even the Minichamps LARKs are not easy ones as the grey is easily too light in the pictures if you get the pink about correct. The same problem seems to be with the old pictures of the real cars. The hardest part is to catch the "glow" of the pink color.
Here are the pictures of Romu's and Raccoons versions of #60:
http://www.romu-romu.com/site/honten/GTSpirits/PHOTO/GTS_Lark/Lark_60/Lark60_1.jpg (http://www.romu-romu.com/site/honten/GTSpirits/PHOTO/GTS_Lark/Lark_60/Lark60_.html)
http://www.raccoon-auto.com/minicar/abload/autobarn/lark60a.jpg (http://www.raccoon-auto.com/minicar/abload/autobarn/lark60.htm)
Romu has typically their photos taken more to the "warm" side of the real shades (more to the red end of shades), so maybe those Luckies are closer to the right when seen live. Still compared to the this GT Spirits LARK, they are darker pink (or red). But for the final verdict would need to see them live.
Is it possibly this long tail LARK you have?

It is one of those pdStudio models, and it definately has the wrong colors: red and black instead of pink and grey. :disappoin

wow, lots of info! The pdstudio Long tail is the one I have. I have the Minichamp 1:43 which I got when it came out originally. I havent seen the real car in years of course, but I think this model is pretty close, if a bit 'matt'. In real life, these Rocket Colours consist of many layers (Rocket Red Marlboro is 7 layers!) to get the vibrant colour. With the gloss lacquer, it would get quite thick, something you cant do on a model.
Anything with a hint of Orange in it is wrong. It is very much a Rocket Pink.
I refer you back to GF Williams images, thats pretty close. I have an image on my own website, which I colour corrected to the best of my ability.
IIRC the metallic grey on the Lark car is the same colour (or damm close) as the Ueno Clinc Metallic Grey, which was referenced off a mid 90's Mercedes SL Bumper. Ueno Clinic owner wanted the same colours on the race car as his personal SL :)

Its a nice model, especially considering the low price; it's a shame the wheels don't rotate, but other than that I can't complain

Is there a particular Manufacturer and scale that has the most complete representation of all the various Mclaren F1, LM, GTR, GT colors and liveries?
For example UT 1/18 or one of the 1/43 manufacturers?
I only ask because i'm getting interested in collecting and would like to stick to one particular size if I do start.

UT made the widest range of the F1s in 1/18 scale, around 20 different versions, and only leaving the GT out of their range. Guiloy and Maisto has done some of them also in 1/18 but I wouldn't recommend them, as they are more like toys, not real scale models. Also AutoArt has the 1/18 road car and rumors are they are doing some others in the future.
1/43 provides the widest range if you want to stick to one size. In that scale Minichamps and AutoBarn have the widest range around 60 different versions, Minichamps also having the long tail GTRs, AutoBarn having only the short tail road and race cars. Sadly neither of them haven't released new models since 2008. IXO is still releasing new models (both short and long tails) as is HPI (long tail GTRs). Then there are lots of smaller, mostly Asian manufacturers/builders and they offer many different versions, both short and long tails. And then if you can't find one you want there are the kits from different manufacturers like Renaissance, Provence Moulage and AutoBarn. Those can be then built by professionals even after your personal desires.
Many start their collections with the 1/18 UTs but later turn to the 1/43s. For many the space requirements to hold a large 1/18 collection are just too much and so it is easier to continue with 1/43s or just because all of the different versions aren't available as 1/18s.
I would suggest you to think first what are the targets of your collection, is it to have all the different versions or just some of those that are special for you. Also how much are you willing to "invest" in the collection and what is the time frame you are willing to put into that collecting: the approach "all-at-once" or slowly during a longer period of time.
The prices are currently on the quite low level so it should be a good time to start collecting, but on the other hand, the older sold out models aren't popping up on the markets so offen at the moment.
In the 1/43s IXOs are the cheapest and typically sold new around 20-40 USD, some specials even up to 80 USD. Minichamps road F1s sell around 20-40 USD as well but the older GTR models that are already sold out range from around 30 USD to even several hundreds, depending on the condition and the desirability of the particular model in question. AutoBarns are handbuilts like BBR and MR models so their initial costs to get to the detail level they have are much higher. Their typical selling price when new has been around 250 USD for the normal single car editions, but the 2nd hand market prices have been from around 100 USD to even above 600 for the single car editions and even 1200 USD for the doubles. Prices in building from the kits depends much of the kit and details wanted and goes from around 150 USD to even above 5000 USD.
I hope this gave some ideas how to start your collection, and hopefully didn't confuse too much! ;)

Thank you DocGTR. That's was not only very thorough but extremely helpful.
I'll probably stick with 1/43 since I'm more into variation then getting select models although I have been thorough with #01R(have 1/43, 1/28, 1/10, 1/8, and 1/5 all in RC though).
I'm also in no rush and don't see myself playing hundreds just to be complete so I'll probably go with what's being produced...IXO and HPI it seems. Haven't bought either yet, do you have a preference between the two? The HPI in the shots above I think look great.
