Why would you want a Kevlar one??
They don't need to be replaced very often and on that RB0DET blowing the cam belt does not cause damage..

ben, re kevlar belt .Im doing the job anyway so i might as well put a kevlar one in. ( peace of mind)
how is that so, that if it does break , there will be no damage to the engine? |

The way the valves etc are setup on a RB20. Unlike a Honda, they will not be damaged if the cam belt breaks.

are you sure the RB20DET and RB25DET are non interference engines??? - it seems weird that everyone is so paranoid about changing timing belts if a timing belt failure wont cause any damage...

DET's maybe, but if a DE breaks a belt kiss the motor goodbye.

Broke mine while it was running no valve contact. You turn it over all day with no problems.

I'd like for someone with a bit more car knowledge than me to explain in a bit more detail why exactally it wouldn't bust the engine.

WDRacing and Forsteen are the main RB20DET engine builders on SDU as far as i know. but reguarding the engine damage - on an interference engine, if you extend the valves to the full open position and put the piston to the top of its travel - they will touch, therefore if the timing belt breaks - the valves can move around randomly and as the pistons go up and down they can come in contact with the valves and bend them also can damage the head i think.
thats as good as i can manage :P |

Ok here's how it goes. If I take off my timing belt and turn over my engine the valves do not come in contact with the piston. This is because of the length of valve and cam lift. I have had my head and cams installed and rotated my crank atleast 15 times. No contact...
I rebuilt my engine 6 times. I changed my head 3 times. I have changed more pistons then I care to. Believe it or not. Makes no real difference to me. This info only pertains to the RB20DET. WD

Timming Belt
On an RB30 the Valves DO hit the pistons on the SOHC engine mega mess if this happens, so be careful of your change over times. They recommend every 100,000k's I change mine every 70,000 to be on the safe side.

I'm glad for the compliment BDP, but WDRacing and TheCamel are the best sources for engine builds. Me?, I'm no expert. I am just learning to figure out alot of what is going on. Learning how a car works is not difficult, but when problems arise, troubleshooting, or tuning, I go to WD or Camel for help.
