timing belt and water pump :(

My water pump went out and my timing belt tore up and broke. I have never replaced either and I was wonder if anyone give me some in depth detail about how to change them properly? Any help would be great.

Re: timing belt and water pump :(

If timing belt broke then your engine (at least the heads) is fucked.

What year/model is your car? If you have a SOHC (base model stealth, or 97-99 base model 3000GT), then your engine is just fine. But if you have a DOHC engine (every other model, r/t, es, TT stealth, or SL VR-4 3000GT), then I'm sorry to say, your engine will need to be replaced.

When the timing belt breaks, the valves in the head bend. USUALLY, you only REALLY need new heads, but for the price of swapping heads, it's cheaper and easier to get a good used engine and just have the whole thing swapped in.

I have a `94 base model (SOHC) Do you think I may need a different engine?

If its a SOHC you have a 99% chance of being safe.

Re: timing belt and water pump :(

ur likely fine, when you get the belt and pump fixed, turn it on and listen to it idle, if no weird sounds, drive it a short distance, if still nothing you're fine

Re: timing belt and water pump :(

Okay, I've got the pump off and new on. But the only problem that I think is left is that my timing belt and I don't know how to set the timing back. Can anyone help me with that problem?

just make sure you got ALL of the old gasket residue off. If not, you'll have to take everything back off, and do it again. even the smallest piece will cause it to leak.

www.stealth316.com should have a page that shows you how to set the timing.

OKay, I went back and double checked the gasket and noticed that the new water pump had a spot for a bolt that I didn't have... well.. to make things easier to explain:

Whoever was messing with the water pump before me broke a bolt head off and now it is flush with the surrounding metal So I can't even get another bold out to start thinking about puting my new water pump back on...

And as you all know I am not the smartest cookie when it comes to mechanical stuff and I'm kind of new to it... so is there anyway possible to get that bolt out so I can get a new one in?

Re: timing belt and water pump :(

THe "bolt" flush with the surrounding metal sounds like the screw that goes in thru the backside.

Re: timing belt and water pump :(

Take a picture of it. If it's a snapped bolt, you'll need to drill and tap/re-thread it.

Ok... How would I get to this bolt if it comes through the backside?
