whinning noise while in 4wd hi
About a week ago I'd posted a thread with respect to grinding in the hubs. Schludwiller was right, the hub had broken, but I was fortunate to have both replaced by the dealer under warranty. I was able to test it out this weekend, again heavily snow covered roads, and noticed a whinning, kind of like a bearing going when I went 35 km and got progressively worse as I increased speed, but only in 4wd. I took it into the dealer and explained this, but of course they could not replicate the sound as there are nothing but dry roads right now. My fear here is that they may have done something, as the sound was definitely not there before I took it in for the hub replacement, and I may be out of luck trying to claim anything when I can finally get them to test it on roads suitable for 4wd. Sorry long winded, but I wondering if anyone can give me any ideas what the sound may be, so that I can discuss this further with them this evening when I pick it up.
Thanks again for all your help. Cheers, |

Well it could be the front bearings have either no lube or they are contaminated. It's kindof hard to tell what they did when they replaced the hub. I haven't replaced a hub myself yet, so maybe some of the other guys on the board can give some insight. (Chuck, Rick?)
Glad we were able to help with the first circumstance. |

Thank you for the reply, I truly appreciate any information people can give me as I'm at a loss when it comes to anything beyond changing the oil. The dealer believes I'm hearing the transfer case chain, could this be????

Yes, I think it is possible that you are just hearing the transfer case. I also hear a slight whine in 4WD that varies with speed. Had the same thing in my Trooper (which was much louder than the X).

I wouldn't try and guess, but as you say it is happeniing when you are in 4WD. If you could send us a WAV. file of the noise that would be better!
I had a guy stop buy while ChuckH, Hayley and I were working on trucks this weekend. It was a 2002 and made noise only while driving..he thought it was related to suspension or steering?

I would roll down your windows when you are hearing the whine. Stick your head out the window and see if you can hear it coming from the front wheels. If so, than chances are it might be your wheel bearings. Otherwise it might be the T-case chain as stated above. To tell you the truth, really the only time I have my truck in 4wd is in 4lo, So I can't help you out there
