What did you thin it down with?
I have found that the best thing to thin Tamiya paints with is Tamiya thinners and using them have yet to get a bad paint job out the airbrush.

If you are talking about the Acrylics they are wonderful paints. They do need higher pressure than some other paints to atomize well,at least 25PSI. They can easily be stripped with ammonia or window cleaner. The flats are a dream to use and you can clean the airbrush with water. I have never had any problems with them. I usually use Isopropyl Alcohol to thin them at about 25% thinner 75% paint.

just some thinner?
Do you mean like enamel thinner?
If you have acryllic paint you can't use enamel thinner, if you did, that is why your paint turned out awful.
What type of thinner did you use?

You can use just about any thinner with the Tamiya Enamel paints, but ONLY use Tamiya thinners (X-20A) with their Acrylic product. You could get away with using water as a thinner, but it takes ages to dry, will run, and isn't as good as their thinner.

Where possible, you should use the Thinner from the paint manufacturer if possible, rather than some generic thinner. Can get interesting otherwise.

i usually spray things up close and thin about 50/50 though.

For the Gloss colors you probably could go lower. It also depends what airbrush you are using. The really cheap single actions need allot of pressure. I have 4 airbrushes a Paasche VL a VLST-Pro and a H model. but I do most of my work with a Badger 175 Crescendo.
Laquers are good at lower pressures like 15PSI. Most manuals for airbrushes reccomend 25PSI. When I first got a gauge I did allot of experimenting and found out what works better.

Same here I have had some good success with a similar paint to thinner ratio usually I use less thinner. But you have to experiment with what gives you.... the results you like.
