I got a ticket for having hyper white bulbs a while ago, and tried to fight it in court. They say the bulbs look blue when in fact they're hyper white and my car is blue, so it reflects back a bluish color. I lost the case despite my best explanations. Just goes to show you that whatever a cop says is basically law, even when he's colorblind.
Im appealing the decision, but I need to know a concrete way to PROVE they are really white and not blue. Can anyone help on this?? I thought maybe getting a prism and one of those light spectrometer things, but I have no idea where to get it and how much itll cost. The ticket came to $105.... Please help guys!

Yes they truly are white and not blue, and yes, the cops and the judge saw them in a fairly dark garage with quite a bit of ambient light. They still said it looked blue. I dont get it, everyone else who sees them says they're white, but in contrast to my shitty stock headlights, they do have a bluish tint. Whatever, I've gathered some more evidence (including buying more lights to show the packages say "WHITE", statements from my color theory teachers, and pictures of my lights and those on lexus' and bmw's).
Thanks for the help guys. I'll let you know how the appeal goes...

That's really lame the cop is ticketing you for your bulbs. Technically speaking though a bulb is not certified 'white' unless it has SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) certification. If anywhere on the bulb it has a DOT stamp, it IS legal. Many bulbs do not have either of these certifications on them. But basically if it has DOT on it, it's legal, if not, it's illegal. But check your state laws for sure. I know this to be true in Minnesota because I called MN State Patrol. They were able to give me the number to where I found out our state's laws. But all in all I think it's pretty stupid with all the other sh@t on the road!

I agree with CustomWhips. Many of the new BMW's and LEXUS vehicles have very deep blue and purple tints to the headlights. I am pretty sure if you have hyperwhite, yours are closer to white. I would present pictures of these new vehicles with their lights on at night and explain that the law is providing double standards.
And i'm not realy serious about this: Leave your lights on and wear out the bulbs. the slight blue tint of the bulb will fade away the more you use it. I bought hyperwhite turns and when i first got them, they looked blue (both the bulb and the actual light given off). now the bulb is barely tinted and the light is pure white. |
