What is needed for SOHC VTEC Swap...

I was going to do a B16 or B18 but I don't really feel like dealing with all the mounts, linkage, axels and all that crap. So now I rather just stay D-series. Which the most powerful USDM ones would be the D16Y8 and D16Z6 I think? I really would only need the engine and everything attached to it right? I can still use my tranny? And out of the Y8 and Z6 which one is better?

Use the Y8...it is newer. You also need to convert to either OBD1 or OBD0.

Y8 is a little better due to higher compression and better designed intake manifold. To do the swap you should use your tranny, newer engine, your ecu, distributor, im not sure about plug wires, your axles, and somehow hook up vtec either via and rpm activator or zdyne product. The swap seems so straight forward, I will be starting on mine after I grab my engine on the 20th of oct.

Is there any tutorials about how to do all the wiring exactly?

sorry Bleebdat..i have to correct you a little. you only use your parts if you have a SI..if you have a DX you will need d16a6 (si) parts. you can use a dx tranny but, if you have an extra $1-200 it is very worth it to get a better geared Si tranny.

there are 2 ways.

-use a6 ecu, distro, and rpm activated switch
-use z6/y8 parts and p28 (92-95 Si/EX) ECU. you can rewire 50 wire (i hope you have patience) or get a wire conversion harness for $150

the p28 route is much better. you can lose a couple of ponies going with the 88-91 Si ecu. i also hear you lose a little gas mileage (but i doubt much). the p28 ecu will engage vtec, no rpm switch needed. another i noticed is that with the p28 your check engine light flashes the error code rather than pulling up your carpet to read the ecu.

this post is exactly why i have been asking people for informational and engine source links in that other post wouldn't it be great to have all the engine/swap info at the site?

I had the patience and resoldered all 50 or so wires, i would rather have done the wire harness route if i had a chance to do it again.

Yo, I don't remember where I read it, but I know I did.... isn't there an issue with the DX throttle cable being too long also? If so, the required one would be an Si throttle cable?
Anyone know where to get a DX - D16Z6/Y8 conversion wiring harness at?

oh, so by wiring harness you mean instead of having the wires resoddered, putting together two connecting ends with which to plug the DX and the sohc vtec ECU together?

You can use the throttle cable of off any 4th gen model that has multi point fuel injection stock. I used the cable off of a CRX HF and it works fine.

One thing also when you do the swap you'll notice that some of the hoses and wires wont have the same mounting brackets so you might have to fabricate them.

One other thing, if you're not using the p28 ECU, you have to use a distributor from a car that came stock with multi point because those have the cylinder position censor inside and the DX distributor does not.
