T5 gearbox to cologne 4.0 V6

Hi

I am trying to get a bellhousing so I can fit a T5 gearbox to my 4.0 cologne engine, same pattern as the 2.9. Did any American cars have a T5 box with the 2.9 v6?

or can anyone point me to a supplier in the uk

cheers
Robert

T5???

The only t5 i know of is the Toyota 5sp found on some of the RWD 4age powered Levins Trueno etc from the 80's.

Its a VERY stong g/box capable of handling 300hp with out complianing and is a commonly used on the old Rover V8, and many small block chevs.

Here in NZ there are a variety of place's that make conversion plates that allow it to be bolted to any engine you want.

If that's not what your talking about then prehaps elaborating a little more would be helpful.

T5

Moppie, the T5 is the BTR Australia (previously Borg-Warner) 5 speed gearbox which was until recently found in all manual Falcons (the XR's now have the Tremec 3650 and I'm not sure what the Forte etc use) and was used in the Commodore prior to the switch to Getrag 5speed in VR. The Tremec 6 speed in the SS is another gearbox again.

The T5 was also used in some of the Fox Mustang's too. It's a reliable gearbox which is capable of handling a fair amount of torque (including the EB III on 302W).

I think the gearbox you were thinking of is the Celica 5 speed which came in steel and alloy cases. (There's one in the race-car and also two more in several pieces in the workshop until we worked out a fix - well we hope it fixes the problem!)

As far as I know the Cologne V6 wasn't widely used in the US but was confined to Capri, Cortina and Sierra in Europe - I could be wrong but there aren't a lot of RWD Ford Platforms except Mustang and Crown Victoria (and I think the Mustang used a six in a few models).

Robert, you could try contacting Quaife in the UK - they do lots of bits in this area (eg Aisin-Warner 6 speed conversions etc) or they could probably put you in the right direction. I used to have one of their catalogs but this got cleared out when I relocated offices - but they are on the web.

Best of luck and let us know how you get on... incidentally this isn't for the XR4x4 because the T5 is a RWD box? I seem to recall the XR4x4 used a Ford sourced MTX75 box...

Hi
thanks for the info, I never thought to contact Quaife, i'll give them a call

You are correct, the XR4x4 does use an MT75 box. I am building a 4.0 SOHC (from an explorer) twin turbo engine for my XR4x4 and I want at the same time to convert to RWD. I have considered a RWD MT75 gearbox but they are very rare to fit the V6 engine as most were automatics. The T5 should be able to handle the estimated 300-350bhp better than the MT75 as well
cheers
Robert
