Can't get the oil filter off! Is there a wrench for this?
Can't get the oil filter off! Is there a wrench for this?
I use the OEM filters and I am f**kin' pissed right about now. I've been f**kin' around with this damn filter for about an hour now. I drove a screw driver through the center of it to try and turn it and the piece of $hit Craftsman scredriver broke When the screwdriver came through the other side of the filter I hit a wire and not sure if I pierced the outer cover or not. Before giving up and coming in because I am sooooo pissed, I laid my head down on the ground only to feel warm oil in my hair I am sooooooo f**kin' pissed right now I feel like driving the f**kin' car off a cliff!!!!! Is there an oil filter wrench for the little OEM filters? If not, I am going to start paying the $12 at the local Wal-Mart. This is too much f**kin' aggravation! I swear my suspension went smoother than this $hit has tonight! Plus the damn Mobil1 cost me about $28 for a 6 quart pack. This is f**kin' bull$hit! I am probably going to pull the engine next year anyhow, so I may just start taking this $hit to Wal-Mart. Hell, maybe they'll leave the drain plug out and I can get a new engine out of them I'm done venting!! Is there a wrench that will make this easier? PS <> The damn filter is still

Alright, take a deep breath, relax. Better now? I had the same problem when I first started trying to do anything to my car, and it is definitely a pain in the ass to get to that filter in the first place.
There are oil filter wrenches readily available at pep boys, or autozone or whatever. You just have to go in and ask them what size you need for you car, and you should be able to find it with no problem. (or if it is easier for you, just go to the Honda dealer and they'll sell you a filter wrench as well, for alot more money that is.) Finally, a couple tips. When you get the filter wrench, dont get cheap, buy the ones that attach to a ratchet (they look like little dishes, perfectly molded for the top of the oil filter.) There are cheap strap looking wrenches that do not work for shit. Trust me, dont even spend money on those, if you cant find the right one, look somewhere else. Another important thing, whenever you work on your car, doing whatever you are doing....ALWAYS leave yourself plenty of time to get it done right the first time. If you are just starting out, and dont know alot yet, leave yourself an extra day even of downtime where you won't need to have the car running. This is just in case something goes wrong (which it always does) you dont have to rush to get it fixed with half assed solutions. Hope things work out, and please do not drive that car with a hole in the oil filter!!!! |

I always make sure my engine is still warm when I change my oil. Usually the filter comes right off with no problems. If I wait until it cools off, its a pain in the ass to get off. Might wanna try that next time.

yeah use the wrench...but when i can't find mine ( i usually can't find any of my damn tools) I just take a screwdriver and a hammer...and pound the screwdriver into the side of the oil filter and turn it to get it off...piece o cake.

I use a special oil filter socket wrench from Craftsman. It attached to your socket for small places.
It works great for me. Next time only hand tighten it and make sure you use a little bit of oil on the filter seal.

I went to AutoZone yesterday and picked up a metal filter wrench that fits perfectly onto the back of the OEM filter. Then just put the 3/8 rachet into the square on the back and turn. Should be pretty simple to use and since it's the little 3/8 rachet, should not be a problem with space
They had about 10 different sizes for the filters.
