Not true at all. A speaker will "work" no matter which wire (+ or -) you put where, as long as the speaker has 1 + and 1 - connection. Unfortunately, if you wired them wrong, your speakers will be out of phase and potentially sound like poo. You'd be surprised at the number of people who run their speakers out of phase and have no clue. If you still don't have an answer for the wiring code, you could buy a manual (which you should do anyway, really), or a multimeter would also work (you should be able to get a cheap one for less than $20 - it will prove invaluable if you ever mess with electronics/stereo components).
