Aftermarket intake VS stock box
I have heard speculation that an Aftermarket intake with a K&N cone style filter will not do as good of a job filtering the air as the stock intake box. What do you guys think? Also, do you guys believe that an aftermarket intake actually has a horsepower gain?

an aftermarket will work 10x better than stock, especially a cold air unit. the stock boxes are restrictive on flow and have numerous curves and bends in the line to prevent smooth flow, unlike the aftermarket parts that will deliver a nice smooth cool charge of air that keeps your car running better.
your friend is nuts.

Okay guys, I am trying to convince my dad and it seems like there isnt a good argument I can make about filtration of the air. He says that the mesh on the k&n expands which lets more dirt in. You guys gotta help me

My K&N box says...
"The K&N Filtercharger Air Filter is unique in all the world. K&N uses premium quality oiled cotton gauze sandwhiched between layers of wire screen. This special design permits very high flow rates, minimum restriction, maximum filtration, and very long filter line. When dirty, simply wash, re-oil and install." -K&N Cone Filters last up to 1,000,000 miles when recharged with K&N Re-Charge Kit. It will last a long time! You will never need to replace it. -K&N flows more than Foam or Paper Filters Better materials equal better and cleaner flow! Plus the shape of the cone, it can allow air in on a 360* level, while a stock air box filter is only 180* tops.

Ok - I have the tests to answer this. If you have just done H/E then it will make no difference at the treads but will sound better. That's it, a big fat zero. If you have gone cams/cam wheels and compression it may make a little difference - 1-2KW. You do not bolt it on and get instant horsepower. It's one of those things that shows a difference as a sum of the other mods that you have done to the engine.
I found this out when I tried a VTiR CAI (VTiR is your EK series Si) on my SiR - no perceptable difference at the treads compared to the stock box with a high-flow (7% better airflow over stock) re-usable filter in it. Now maybe the SiR has better air pickup than the USDM spec cars and that's the difference - but bang for buck I'd go an insert unless you turbocharge etc. Just my 10c - others will disagree - I'd just suggest going in with your eyes open and not expecting to lose 2/10ths off your 1/4 times as a result. Cheers |

I actually am not looking for HP here. One time when we were doing some engine work, we had the intake taken off and you could hear the air being sucked into the engine. Just figured a Short Ram would produce the same sound, and if I get some added performance benefit, so be it.

CAI
I use both a CAI and the stock airbox in my civic. In the summer i use the CAI but i worry about it sucking up slush in the winter so i cut the stock airbox up a bit and put a K&N filter in it and i can't notice a bit of difference. I get the same sounds from each intake with the stock box cut up a bit. Really all the CAI does is look pretty. In the Civic that spoon sports use to autocross a few years back had the stock air box in it. In a magazine write up on the car spoon sports said that they chose to keep the stock airbox b/c the way that honda makes them they aren't restrictive and that with a good drop-in fitler you will gain something like 2 ft lbs vs. minimal gain with the CAI.

CAI is bullshit as far as I am conerned, The filter cant possibly be colder air because it is put closer to the ROAD and most roads are surfaced with BLACK asphalt and lets see... what color attracts heat like a mother? Oh, thats right BLACK.

OK im a little late on this one, but 1) a CAI does bring in colder air...Melt what is hotter the asphalt or your internal combustion engine. 2) aftermarket filters do let in things that are harmful to your engine. There was a post on another forum a long long time ago, and he worked for a company that used those huge trucks at mining sites, he proposed that his company switch from paper filters they were changing weekly to reuseable filters by k&n that would just be cleaned weekly. After a few months they had the oil in the trucks analyzed to reveal huge amounts of dirt and metal flakes that were never there before, these were million dollar machines, so the k&n's were tossed immediatly. 3) Unless you are doing many more engine upgrades a CAI doesnt do too much for you. 4) why not just cut your stock air box to let more in. I would take pictures of what I did to mine, but no digi cam =(.
