Where is multi-remote control unit? And how do I get access to it?

I just bought a 99 maxima GXE. It did not come with a keyless remote even thought the light for security was blinking. So I ordered a keyless remote from keylessride.com. When I tried the set the remote in the multi-remote control unit, I had problems. I was told to lock all the doors
and then put the key in and out of the ignition more than six times and then press remote. But I did not get the blink hazards like I was suppose too, after the key has gone in and out more than six times. I tried this procedure many times with no luck. I think the previous owners may have installed the aftermarket security system. I bought the car from a dealer, so he has no clue or remote that came with the car. So I need to inspect the multi-remote control unit and fix the wiring or figure out what the aftermarket security system is and get a remote for that. Can anyone help with my dilema?

Thanks
Andy

I believe the unit your looking for is located in the trunk, right hand side, behind the pannels.

Unhappy

I looked in the trunk and found nothing, after I pulled out the panels. I did stop by a nissan dealer and asked them where this part might be. He told me that the thing I wanted to look at was under the center console. Under the heater and radio. He said that if a aftermarket alarm was put it, they would have hacked in there. He called the unit a IVMS (In-Vehicle Multiplexing System).

Now, I just have to tear the center console part without breaking the
wood grain panels. Is there a easy way the remove them without breaking them? Where are the snap points? (so I can be carefull) They did not give me any pictures of how to take this apart. Might anyone have pictures of this.

Andy

PS - Thanks for all replies

Well, it looks like I still have problems. I took apart the center console and saw no hacks in any of the wires. I did not find a aftermarket alarm in there either. So I went to the trunk and took out the panels and did not see anything. With closer inspection I found two connectors hooked to the car near the car jack. I think they took out the multi-remote control unit altogether. I think one is for a power antenna (which I do not have) and I think the other might have gone to the multi-remote control unit.

So the questions are as follows:

1) How can I tell what those wire are really for?

2) Does the led in the dash blink even if the multi-remote contol unit is removed?

3) If it does not, where would you put a aftermarket alarm? I looked all over and could not find one. There are stickers on the window that make me believe that a aftermarket alarm might be installed.

4) If nothing can be found. Where can I get a new multi-remote control
unit without paying an arm or a leg? Or should I just get a new alarm put in? Which would be cheaper?

Man, I could really use a factory shop manual.

Something doesn't sound right here. I thought all 99 Maxima's had the vehicle immobilizer system. (Chipped Ignition Key) Which is part of the security system. The procedure for the programming of the remote is to get in the car, LOCK THE DOORS, then put the key in and out more then 7 times in 10 seconds, hazards will blink indicating program mode, press remote button and so on. Are you SURE you locked the doors before you started putting the key in and out????

Also, check the trunk again, look at the rear panel this time, not the sides. I looked in my 99 and much to my suprise, it's not on the side like I though it was. I do hear the clicking when my lights flash when I arm my car come from the very rear of the trunk. Perhaps the unit is back there, near the trunk latch.

Montarabob post the following in a different thread about keyless entry -

"If your car is equiped for it, yes. 96SE should be. Check in the trunk, behind the grey trim, right side by antni. If equiped youll find a black box mounted next to antni."

My car does have the micro chip keys, but that seems to be part of a different system. I tried the steps you mentioned multiple time with the doors lock and was unable to get any hazard lights to flash. I think what might have happened was that the person who owned it before me put in a aftermarket security system and removed the factory security system. When they sold the car, I think they took the aftermarket system out and did not replace it with the original.

There are two sets of stickers on the car. One set look factory the other set look aftermarket (but has no name). I looked all over and can not find the aftermarket system if it is still there. Like I said, I did find two connectors dangling from the antni compartment. One is pretty big and I think this is where the factory system was.

Does anyone have a factory shop manual? So I could get some references. The hayden books do not even talk about this stuff.
