280zxt vs eclipse gst?

ok, there is this girl at work with an eclipse gst (90 something? not sure what year) its an automatic with some kind of exhaust... i think its just a muffler... but anyways...

I was wondering if my bone stock '83 280zxt 5spd could keep up/win against her eclipse?

My Z is supposed to have something like 180hp at the flywheel, but then again its almost 20 years old, and probably a little tired

And I still wanna know if I have a chance before I try it

She would probably win. those gst put out about 210hp wich would be quite a bit above 180hp.

Thumbs up You stand a good shot...

She is making a little more HP than you 210 to 180 (by the way both of these numbers are at the rear not the flywheel) but you are runninng a five speed and should weigh about 400lbs less! 180Hp should get you about 14.8sec in the quarter in a 3000lb ride. 210 hp would be about as fast in a 3400lb ride. Looks pretty even to me, if your cars not too tired I say the five speed will do her in. Also, you may want to check into dialing up your boost a little. Im not sure how to do it on your car but if you search the net I bet you can find something. You can bump the boost up on most cars by three or four psi for free by modding the waste gate. This should be a safe and easy mod since your getting new injectors and all.

I'd say go for it, the combined advantage of the 5-speed, plus the weight advantage gives you a fair chance, if not the advantage. Because although the GS-T has about 210 HP, it's a freaking bath tub compared to yours seeing as how it weighs 3100lbs. Now I'm not an expert on the datsuns from that time period but I'm pretty sure your car can't weight more then say 2600-2700lbs, which gives you a 400 or more lbs. advantage. I say go for it.

I doubt the GS-T has 210HP. I have seen the turbo on those and it is tiny compared to mine. My car is rated at about 205HP and I kill stock GS-Ts and GSXs all the time. Ah, but I don't really know, I am sure you guys have looked it up. Anyhow; I say go for it, I bet you could take her.

Well well well, i just learned something interesting. The GS-T isn't AWD. It's FWD. And yes it does produce 210HP. I was wrong, it only weighs about 2900lbs, but since it's FWD, that gives you the advantage still. I was always curious as to what the difference between a GS-T and a GSX was, now i know

o it does come to thing of it i do remember something about 210hp

hahaha the GSX is better but probably is slower due to the AWD

i think you should get a RB26DETT and shove it into your car (that would cost quite abit) but it would be great fun to see peoples faces when you mash the throttle and hear some chirps from the dump valves

One more thing...

Here is another little trick that worked well on my old 83 ZX NA. If you dont live in an area that does emissions testing you should gut your cat! The stock cats are really bad to close up over time. Mine started to really run crappy and the problem gave me fits forever! One day I looked under the car and the cat was cherry red! Removed the muffler, took a long pry bar and busted the element up. You need to have the car running while you do this. That way as you break up the element you can rev the engine and blow the crap out the back. It made a TON of differnece for me! I could feel it for sure in the seat of the pants meeter!

Additionally like I said do a search on 280ZX performance. You should be able to find a free - $20 mod that can up your boost a few psi that will make the biggest difference!

i used to work at a garage where they sold cars as well as fixed em (tossers they were) anyway they'd rev the engines to blow the rap outta the cat all the time all the sudden it would go poof and this black crap would fly out the exhaust then it would drop a note or two and they'd ease off

did a little research and came up with this. A stock 1983 280 zx turbo runs 0-60 in 7.3 sec. While a stock 1990 eclipse gs-t runs the 0-60 in 7.4
It would be a close run if both cars are in top notch running condition.

I was thinking about some kind of a motor swap... I was looking at the 90-96 300zx twin turbo motors, but they seem to have high repair bills, and are pretty expensive...

There was a wrecked Skyline on ebay with the rear completely destroyed which came with a fairly low mileage complete engine/turbos/wiring/drivetrain/etc for 6k... If I had 6k, believe me, it would be mine :P I just gotta get outta debt first, and I'll either rebuild the motor outta my '81 280zxt, or buy another motor to swap in... A v-8 would be fun, but I really like having turbo over having tons of cubic inches (having both would be nice tho)
