I messed up.....

OK i got in a wreck the other day, i was going to be turning right at a red light and was slowing, there was a car in front of me, also turning right, he stopped, and was creeping and was past the white line, and then he stopped, i hit him in the rear, i guess i knocked his power steering belt off he couldnt turn, but NE way we pulled into walgreens, there wasnt any noticeable damage, i knew the kid from skewl, and told him i was ghonna drop my brother at skewl and come back, i came back and he said he called his mom becuase i had offered him a ride to skewl, i got the impression it was ok to leave so i left. we didnt exchange info, i though it would be ok i mean he lives down the street, but when his mom got there i guess they called the cops and so now he says the bumper of his car fell off and that i shoudlnt have left, i got a court date for leaving and the police report says nothing about him turning, and estimated at 700 damages, i am kinda screwed, the father of the kid came over and offered $500 for him to not report it and to "drop the charges". I was wondering if it would be better to go to court or to just pay for it out of my money? and is it possible for him to "drop the charges" or not? i was wondering what i should do........and i dont exactly have $500, so im pretty screwed, not only that the kid doesnt like me at all,and neither do his freinds, they have been messin with me at skewl, there in some kinda of "gang" its pretty stupid, but even if i pay it out of my pocket, i dont where i can just get $500 from my parents are kinda poor, and i only have about 50 bucks left over from my paycheck every other week cuz i gotta pay my car payment and insurance

Re: I messed up.....

Dont settle out of court. What he offered is legit, but is shady. Go to court. Explain what happened to the judge. Let him decide. What about inurance? Dont you have it? But overall, I would go to court over it. Also bring up that they are messing with your shit. Bring in witnesses to that also. That will go against them.

Bah, I cant write today.

Well there is a group of kids who just dont like me at skewl, cuz i moved away for a year and than came back, that wouldnt work, and i dont have full coverage cuz i cant pay the extra 400 dollars to bump my plan up to it, and if my insurance companies does find out, my premium goes up, and can they "drop the charges?"

Did his bumper actually fall off?

DO NOT TAKE MONEY FROM THE FATHER IN EXCHANGE FOR DROPPING CHARGES. He is taking advantage of you because you are young and upset at the moment, and probably don't have a clue what to do next. Also, have you discussed this with your parents? If you are both underage your parents need to sort things out. Do not go head to head with the father, take it to court and explain what happened, and include how he gave you the OK to drop someone off and come back. Make sure you also tell them how the father tried to get $$ out of you in exchange for dropping charges. To me that reeks of extortion.

Also your parents (if you are under 18) need to ask the father to present 3 WRITTEN estimates from a qualified body shop and one from the insurance company. Sorry but if you damaged only a rear bumper the most it should cost is around $250-300...IF you caused even that much damage.

It is better to go thru insurance/courts and be out of a few extra bucks for a few years than to try to reason with a greedy parent. The father can always try to keep making life miserable whereas insurance compnay/court decisions are final.

If you or your parents have any questions or worries you should consult an attorney in your area. DO NOT SIGN any paperwork or give any recorded statements without doing so.

what kind of car was he driving? and if a belt fell of because of a bump, how long would it have stayed on anyway? CAN IT EVEN FALL OF BECAUSE OF THAT??? you should definately get the damage estamates on his car and take it in court. that way, even if you do have to pay it goes to the body shop/ car repair, instead of his dad.

your liability insurance should cover him, full coverage is more for your car. most insurance companies will only take away discounts for your first accident, if this is your first, it shouldnt be that bad.

If the belt fell off as a result of behing hit, either Towlie really slammed into him good (which would have made the car undriveable right there and couldn't even get it into the walgreen's parking lot) or that car is in really bad shape.

But like I said it's better to let insurance/courts take care of it than to try to deal with the kid's dad on your own. He is trying to rip you off. ANd if you do have to fork out money it should go toward fixing the car, not his wallet.

I don't think that they have the option of dropping charges on a hit and run. The police can drop the charges.

And did you say that you didn't see any damage to his car or your car? Well how did his bumper fall off? And how did he get into a Walgreens parking lot with no steering? I wouldn't be surprised if this kid and his parents are yanking your chain. I can almost smell an insurance scam. Or a bad story.

If you were doing 15 or under you could not have possibly done that much damage. As far as "charges" go, is there any legal paperwork stating you are being charged? Also it is not the policeman's decision to estimate how much damages are, it is the body shop and insurance companys who can officially assess what the real damges are.

If you are trying to get out of going thru your insurance that is not a wise move. It is better to do everything the right and legal way (even if it does cost a bit out of your pocket) than to try to get around it. How old are you by the way and if you are under 18 what are parents doing about this...or have you told them??

You should report it to your insurance because...if the police did make a report and wrote your ins info down, and if the kid and his parents called your ins co. they will already know about it. Also depending on who you are insured with....companies do a random check of driver records and if your accident shows up it won't look too good.
