Usually when people refer to a "Cold Intake" they mean partitioning off your filter (or cold air box) and plumbing a pipe to the front of the car (usually lower part of bumper) so the air you get in your intake is cold and fresh...and not heated up by the engine....
And yes a cold intake is definately better

The cold air intake is just a longer pipe that puts the intake filter outside of the engine bay. This way it grabs in cooler air from outside the car that hasn't been bouncing around all of the engine equipment. Also, I believe more air will be sucked in because of the better air flow from the new area the filter is. The only problem with CAI's is there is a chance you can ingest water into your engine. A company called AEM makes an air bypass valve that eliminates this problem. I was very skeptical of the product until I saw them test it on the companys president's NSX. They totally submerged the intake into a tank of water and water did come into the intake piping, but never even close to the bypass valve. So no water was even close to getting into the engine. I figured if it's good enough for an NSX, it would be good enough for my little accord

yup super accord hits the nail right in the head. pretty much its a long pipe that routes the filter down to the lower bumper to grab frest cold air since cold air has more packed molecules, it burns better and you get more hp gain then with a short ram. AEM makes a by pass valve. i forgot how that exactly works but it works until you put it in the extreme situations. it will go into your engine if you rev it inside a puddle. and keep on reving it, stop reving it, it will casue the water to be drawn up and down really fast. during that test with the NSX, the water actually was pretty close of goin into the engine. its still a whole lot safer then a CAI without the bypass valve though. and yes water is baaaaaaad for engine, you'll hydro lock your engine and crack and break your connecting rods.

The AEM thing sounds interesting. Can anyone please tell me whether it could be fitted to a GTR and if so, how could I buy it? Is there any website I could visit to read about it?

This is the link to the main AEM page.
And here's the link to the test with the NSX I believe you'd be able to get that bypass valve to fit any intake. They have different diameter sizes to match most engines. The only thing you'd have to make sure of is that you have room to install it. It's bigger than you'd think. I had a small problem getting it in my accord and I almost had to install it over the Carb exempt sticker (that would have been bad!!) but we had ONE other place to put it! So just make sure you have some room around the intake piping where it could go ![]() If you want, I could get you a pic of mine, it's not on a skyline or nuthin , but you'd get the idea.

I'll put one up tonight when I get home. I'll try to find a pic of my old one too so you can see the difference between a short one and the long one! It's 9:00 AM here, you can expect one about 6:30PM

Here's a shot of the whole thing.
Here's a shot of the bypass up close. Here you can see the filter is completely out of the engine bay. And one more shot showing it's all the way out. |

You wouldn't want a car without an air bypass valve now, would you?
