Question SES code 440...

Have a 97 Grand Prix GT with 102,000 miles. My service engine soon light came on...took car to Auto Zone and it showed code of 440 which is an Evap emission control system malfunction. Possible causes were bad gas cap (replaced), vacumm leak at engine (couldn't find one), the EVAP cannister, hose cracked or a defective purge or vent solenoid. Don't have a clue about where they are or how you check them....anyone out there know?? or is it time to take it to a professional??

Re: Help...SES Light is on

I do not remember seen the evap canister on my GTP. I know that ripn12s or CarnutCass can tell you where it is located. PM them on that

Re: Help...SES Light is on

Cannister Purge solenoid: Top front of the engine, on the intake manifold near the fuel injectors

Cannister Vent and solenoid: Behind the left side of the rear fascia splash shield, behind the wheel well. You have to remove wheel and wheel house liner.

Here is a link to service information on this code if you want to read thru it. Hope this is a 3.8L engine - I wasn't sure

Pretty complicated stuff since it takes 8 pages (LOL)

Re: Help...SES Light is on

Other things that could cause this code are

Fuel tank pressure sensor
Air leak at the sender
vaccum lines off anywhere on the fuel vapor lines

Re: Help...SES Light is on

Flatrater, aren't those leaks supposed to give you a fuel smell around the engine bay?
If that is correct, Sticks have you felt such as smell on your car?

Re: SES code 440...

i have the same message with code P0449. i just bought a purge solenoid canister vent valve blah blah...I havnt installed it yet but it only cost $25. and should take only 5 min. to install.

If you cant find the canister...buy it, remove the engine shield, you cant miss it. If it was a snake...
