The thread being started is to seperate the real rally people from the ocasional dirt rider and the people who don't do it but they wish they could.

So who does what around here?
Any SCCA Pro-rally people,
WRC drivers,
weekend dirt flinger,
wannabes,

Re: Who's really getting dirty here anyways?

I guess I should put myself under wannabe as well.
I do so enjoy tossing my Mk2 GTi in the dirt and mud.
I'd like to think I'd get quite good at real rallying if I could ever afford to go to a rally school.
I'm trying to get myself in the SCCA this year or next to really start honing my skills.

Re: Re: Who's really getting dirty here anyways?

Iv spent two seasons crewing on a 1600cc class MK1 Escort here in NZ, we did all the North Island National events, plus many sprints and hill climbs.
Great fun, and if you ever get the opertunity I highly recomend it.

Iv also spectated on many of the national rounds, and of course have seen a few of the WRC rounds held here.

As for actualy driving; I got to drive the rally car on a tarmac circut, but never fast in gravel (only while under tow). Most of the cars Iv owned have not been very gravel friendly, the Honda's have all had to short a suspension travel and suffer traction issues, while the Triumph had springs and shocks that were stiff and it would suffer wheel hop. The only car that was any fun was an old Datsun, but I only owned that for about 12mnths, and gave up swinging it around in the gravel after a to close call with a fence post.

Sweet.
Mk1 Escorts are badass.
I wish I were a Kiwi, you guys got all the coolest shit down there! I need to move there or Austrailia or somethin'.
I'm getting really tired of living in the u.s.

Re: Who's really getting dirty here anyways?

Done my fair share of weekend dirt flinging, on forestry roads which were used in rally events too.
Similar to Moppie, one rather close encounter with a fence post slowed me down some....
Also like to chat....

Wannabe

I'm a rally wannabe, however I've had plenty of chance to register for my local rallycross event and haven't. I like to throw my bimmer around gravel public-access, dead-end roads late at night. I can go pretty fast and control the car pretty well, but I don't try an exceed my limits. The only place I could push it to the limit is at Oakland Acres Rallycross in Virginia. I live only 2 hours away and i should really go, but I keep putting it off. Who here thinks its worth a 2 hour drive to compete in a rallycross event, at which you may embarass the hell out of yourself? I'm also thinking maybe its not a good idea to use an E36 4 cylinder... but i've definitely seen weirder cars rallied. And besides that I don't have any other car to use, and rwd on dirt is wicked fun.

Re: Who's really getting dirty here anyways?

BMWDrifter, 2hrs is nothing to drive for a rallycross. They are good times. I have not done many, but a few. This weekend I am driving 3 1/2 hrs to go to one. Heck I have driven 10+ hrs to see a club rally and we missed half of it. Do it and don't worry about making a fool of yourself, BMWDrifter, it is all about having fun. The group that I race with could really care less who wins or looses they are there just to enjoy their cars to the fullest. Plus, i don't know how you drive, but I would put money down that your are probably not the worst there.

Haven't posted here in awhile but... I've been rallying as a co-driver for over 5 years now (nothing fancy, just local entry-level stuff) and been behind the wheel on some sprint races. Absolutely love it

Re: Who's really getting dirty here anyways?

I crew for a couple of teams from state rounds to ARC (australian rally championships) rounds, you just have to do it, as long as you don't mind sitting around for hours on end. he he he

Re: Who's really getting dirty here anyways?

I am probably still a wannabe. I get out to work a few SCCA Pro/Club events when I can, and have specced GB once (and will be speccing Mexico next year if it kills me *determined*). I'm starting in rallycross this year and planning to step up to some club events just as soon as I get that little "don't have rallycar" detail sorted...
