Question 2002 transmission oil change?

have a 2002 explorer 4 wheel drive with OD transmission. book says it has no dip stick, and i sure cant find one. thinking of dropping pan, change oil and filter and refill. anyone done this? i dont have a older transmission to compare to for dip stick location or level. thought maybe i remove tube to cooler to check level? but how to refill?

Re: 2002 transmission oil change?

Form follows function. The following I have gleaned as the procedure. Remember fluid level is HIGHER with the engine NOT RUNNING. This is the reason you fill, then run the tngine to temp, and then add fluid. This is a tricky procedure if you do not understand the theory.

"Drain the fluid out of the plug on the bottom of the pan. Unscrew the large plug to drain the fluid. This will only drain fluid in pan. Then reinstall large plug and remove the small center plug. You will have to push fluid in pan using a pump or trans filler plunger. After you get four quarts of fluid in the pan, start engine and bring trans temp up to 124 degrees. Add a little more fluid until you have a steady flow of fluid out of hole. Go through the gears and recheck in the same way. Reinstall the plug."
