Thumbs up 2002 transmission oil- thanks O.H.

Thanks for the info Opera House. I have the 2002 XLT with 5 speed automatic transmission model 5R55W. Remember it has no dip stick. With your basic info, i did some research and got the oil changed. Got a filter at Auto Zone, ended up being wrong one. NAPA said there is no such transmission?? Heres what i did. About a 1 inch plug in the oil pan with a 1/8 inch pipe plug in the middle. Pulled the big plug and drained almost 5 quarts of fluid. Removed the steel pan. Took off the filter. Could not find new so i backwashed it, flushed and blew out with air. Cleaned the inside of transmission, pan and about 1/2 spoon full of "crud" off the magnet in the pan. Reinstalled the pan. Now for the refill. YOu reinstall the 1 inch plug which has a bout a 1.5 inch stand tube inside. YOu pump the 5 quarts of oil back thru the 1/8 inch plug hole, then install the plug. I ended up using a 2 gallon weep sprayer with the hose slid over a 1/8 pipe nipple. Pump slow and it filled in about 3 minutes. Remember this takes MERCON V, not straight Mercon. I pumped in exactly the same amount i removed and stopped. Found on the internet that you are supposed it run it for several minutes around town, then park in driveway with motor running, pull the 1/8 inch plug in the center and let any extra run out. That is the level. Not sure i want to be under neith with drain plug open and truck running--- maybe next time. Any way- thanks foe getting me started Opera. I did punch in 5R55W on search and came up with a couple drawings of the transmission, the pan, and description on how to change the oil. All i need to do now is convice Auto Zone and NAPA that FORD built a 5 speed auto!!

Re: 2002 transmission oil- thanks O.H.

Glad it worked out. I recommend www.bulkpart.com to people for filters and other transmission parts. They carry the OEM SPX microfelt filter that Ford uses. The filter for the A4LD through 5R55E is only $10 compared to $23 at parts stores. Even with $7.50 shipping added that is less. Buy a couple at a time. Just remember this is bulk and you have to order the pan gasket and O rings seperately. I imagine the W is comperable in price. Manuals are only $16 too.
