Timing Belt Broke today - are my valves shot??

So ya, I broke my timing belt. I didn't realize it until later, I thought it was my dizzy cause I wasn't getting spark. Then I realized that I wasn't getting any compression and the engine was turning over way to easy, sooooo - I pulled the valve cover and checked the timing belt - it wasn't even touching the cam gear. Any ideas?? Am I going to have to swap out the head, or the whole engine or just the timing belt or what??? Please help ASAP.

Wow, happened to me too last year. My gf was driving 50 on the highway when it broke . To my amazement the head/valves were fine. My mechanic said that hondas arent that bad when it comes to belts breaking. So you might be lucky... I'd say have the valves checked and be sure to be on top of things the next time

Do you know if there is anyway to tell if your valves are damaged without pulling the head off??

Or you can whack on a new timing belt, start it, if it does more damage, they're shagged.

Get it looked at. head off.

Re: Timing Belt Broke today - are my valves shot??

i broke a belt on my old hatch. all i did to check it was spin the cam gear, everything spun freely, then spun the crank, again, no problem, and finally, put a timing belt on it and did a compression test. compression was fine. so i cranked it up, and it went another 30k before i swapped the engine out for a b16a

The only way to know is to put a new timing belt on there and see if it runs. You could check the compression after you get the new belt on to be sure.
Mine broke while I was hauling ass down the highway. I didn't keep cranking on it when it wouldn't start, just got to work. My valves were fine. All is not lost!

yeah i agree as long as its not a dual b series you'll probably have good luck with it, set the timing and give it a shot.

Update - put new belt on, set timing and distributer, it'll start up, but won't rev past 3k. I'm thinking I've got a bad valve or two - also, I've used a timing light on it and the timing is dead on, so everthing should be working properly. I'm getting ready to pull the head off tomorrow.

Before you pull the head make sure your timing is dead on. GL

I hate doing timming belts they are such a pain in the ass! I wish they were chained timming belts instead...

Re: Timing Belt Broke today - are my valves shot??

You could do a compression test and if it has 0 compression than you probably have a bent valve that isn't sealing. That is probably the easiest way.

Update - timing is dead on - the car would start and idle fine and rev up to 3k, but won't rev any higher. Pulled head off yesterday, valves are fine - put new gasket on and reassembled - retimed engine - exact same thing - I'm thinking distributor now - it's giving erros 4, 8, and 9. When I first broke the timing belt I tested the spark and got none (obviously, cam wasn't moving) so I replaced my distro under warranty. Now I'm suspecting that the one they gave me is DOA and has a bad TDC and crank angle sensor in it. This totally sucks because they have my good one now and I have a bad one, my car would be running right now. There aren't any in my area so they have ordered a new one and it should be tomorrow. I hope so then I can put my car back together and drive it again.
