Best get yourself a good manual and/or mechanically minded friend for starters.

I've been there many a time man, I feel your pain. I had an 89 subaru justy... sorta Http://www.geocities.com/danmdevries/danny.html And then an 82 olds delta, both cars required quite a bit to keep em going. The justy also served as my home for 2 months in the Chicago winter. It's getting warmer, and unless you are mechanically inclined, I'd recommend walking/hitching a ride to work. I kept the delta running just by funnelling money and labor into it. I dropped nearly 7 grand in the car, bit by bit, over the course of a year cause it would need a repair, i could barely afford it, i'd do it, then another thing would break, i'd blow my next paycheck on that, and so on.... Look for a moped or somethin to hold u over until you can get the car fixed/fix the car or get a new (working) car. Timing belt/chain snapping is not a fun thing, happened in my first car, valves all F'd up.

Oh, yeah, go to autozone, get a haynes manual (about $15) and youll find it is the best investment you can make for your sexcort. That'll help with the timing belt deal, however if it's your first one, I'd try to find a friend that knows what they're doing at least for supervision.

Just a note:
The 1.9L Escort engine is a non-interference engine, which means it won't screw up the valves if your timing belt goes. But it will leave you stranded.
