wont start

checked the plugs, wires, rotor, and dis cap. gas is in, oil is good. new battery. the engine turns, but doesnt actually start, or seem to want to. the starter is turning the engine too. im thinking maybe battery cables, compression, or timing. any help is apreciated, as my car is sitting in the parking lot at work.

btw, i tried push starting it, and it still didnt start. so its not the starter.

thanks
paul

Re: wont start

did you actually check to see if you had a spark?take the coil wire running to the engine or any wire for that matter and hold it close to a ground, IE screw or something metal. Make sure the wire is closer to the metal than it is to you. It hurts like hell to get shocked by that thing.

Listen to the fuel pump! When u turns the ignition key on, to accessories u should hear the pump build up pressure and then stop. If u can’t hear it open the fuel pump cover and try again. If nothing is sounding it could be your fuel pump or your ECU. My stanza (it has a KA) did the same thing and I had to rout the fuel pump directly to the circuit, meaning that the it is always on and not controlled by the ECU, so when I turn the key on accessories, the pomp sound will not stop.

One more idea, check your hoses, a small vacuum hose can make your life miserable. I had that too when I had the stanza. Look for crakes or loose hoses around the intake manifold, I had one and my car would not stay on for more then a few seconds…

Something to think about!

Yes. try and start it. You will need someone else or jump the battery to the starter via a cable. To check the fuel, I would take the fuel hose off at the fuel filer, place it in a container, and turn the key to the on position. As you can imagine, fuel should spray out of the hose. Listening is probably sufficient, but taking the hose off is a sure way.

you most likely have a bad ignition coil... one way i saw my friend do to fry his coil was by putting the battery in backwards. i hope thats not what you did! i would say its about a 80% chance that you need to replace your ignition coil. costs $139.00 from nissan dealerships to replace, or go to a junkyard and try to find one for cheaper

Re: wont start

i dont think i put the battery in backwards. it started up just fine at first, then the next time i went to start it, it just turned. i had someone check it out today and they suggested the fuel pump, without any hesitation. estimated 30-40 bucks. so im gonna replace that, and see what happens

Yes. try and start it while holding the coil wire (the one that goes from the coil into the middle of the distributor) very close to a ground. You will need someone else or jump the battery to the starter via a cable. To check the fuel, I would take the fuel hose off at the fuel filer, place it in a container, and turn the key to the on position. As you can imagine, fuel should spray out of the hose.
