Whats an LS1?

first off im apologising if i have put this in the wrong forum, i just couldnt see the right place for this topic.

Basically, I am from England, so although i know quite a lot about European cars i know very little about American cars (apart from the obvious ones like the corvette, mustang etc.). I keep reading about a car called a LS1, and i was very curious to who this car is made by, how fast (hp) it is, and what it looks like.

Any replies would be very welcome!

ps. its gonna be very embarrassing if the Ls1 turns out to be a european car!!!

No need to feel embarrassed, the LS1 is an engine model used by Chevrolet in 98+ Cameros, Trans Ams and the previous version of the Corvette. You may also hear of the LT1 engine, which is the one, used before that.

If I'm not mistaken the standard hp on this baby is 305 in the camaro and T/A... When it was in the corvette I think it was around 345... That help you out?

The LS1 is an awesome engine. It's rated at around 310 for the Z28, however many people have dynoed it and came up with around 325 at the flywheel. There are even some cases where GM used the LS6 block and other LS6 parts in some newer LS1's. With an adequate driver, a six-speed LS1 does the 1/4 mile in the low 13's.
