MR2 Turbo vs Mazda 6

I thought these things were supposed to be quick (the V6 I mean)

Im on my way back to school because I was home for the weekend, I was on RT 29 and at a stoplight some kid in a silver Mazda 6 pulls up next to me. He couldnt have been more that 16 and whats worse, his mom was in the passenger seat. But, he revved at me, I smiled at him, I thought it was cute, I didnt really think he was going to race me...

So when the light turned green I didnt really launch, I took off as I usually do, and I hear his tires screach, and he starts gunning it, so i figure'd "why not" and I floor it. Needless to say his car was far behind by the time I hit 3rd and I wasnt even shifting that quickly. He started to pull up for a loser flyby when I started cruising in 5th at highway speeds, so I downshifted and left him again...

Like I said, I thought those things were supposed to be quick? Wheres the "Zoom Zoom"?

i drove the mazda speed protege that my class mate had. it was a turbo one. when i drove it i expected it to feel the boost kick in and have a continous build up of power. but thats not the case. the car felt like a n/a and it was probrably one of hte slowest cars i have ever driven. i mean even a stock eclipse GST felt much faster. and i thought the stock GST felt slow as balls. i guess i got spoiled from driving 13 second cars.

Like.. mid 14s at best? I want to say 14.8... but don't quote me on that, I can't remember the exact times off the top of my head.

they run a 14.4-14.5 but they trap at only 95mph. and it takes over 15 seconds to hit 100mph.

Oh ok, i'm guessing he would have probably gotten me. I dont get to run my car until march 5th so i'm not sure what it will run. i'm guessing 14.7-14.8's at best. I bought a 5.0 because i was thinking they were fast....stock.....at the time. They aint.

Re: MR2 Turbo vs Mazda 6

Well the new Mazda 626's run a low 15 sec. 1/4 mile author. your MR2 turbo's 1/4 mile is typically in the mid to high 14 sec. range. 3 tenths of a sec. is more then a car length from what I have experienced. as for the RX8, it sucks. I've seen mostly high 14 sec. 1/4 mile times posted for it, and I believe a 15 sec. 1/4 mile pass once in a popular magazine. They corner well, but for the price you could do a heckuva lot better (Evolution). In any event, nice kill.

Re: MR2 Turbo vs Mazda 6

The Mazdaspeed Protege you saw in the mag, 94tegRS, ran a 15 sec. flat 1/4 mile. They aren't slow IMO, but they're no SRT-4.

I'm also leaning towards the statement of "You were in a turbocharged 2 seat sports car and he was in a stock family sedan with a bit of a sporting edge."

A Mazda 6 is pretty quick and fun to drive WHEN COMPARED TO A CAMRY OR ACCORD. Be realistic. Mazda is trying to lure away sales from Toyota Camry and Honda Accord by using the same tactic that Nissan has been using with the Maxima; offer the same utility and appliance like reliabilty as the plain jane Accord or Camry, but in a more sporty and fun package.

In conclusion, lemme ask you this; Did you want to be dusted by some kid in mommy's sedan?
