Newbie with questions about getting a 240sx

Hi, I'm considering getting a '90 or '95 240sx, the 1990 being the most likely.

My biggest concern is how much work will I have to face to fix problems it may have. In other words, in 2004, how reliable is the motor and the transmission going to be (for 5 speed or automatic), if we estimate that it has around 100,000 miles on it?

What issues should I be aware of? I figure it would be a good project car to make look good, but I don't want to pour any money into the mechanicals if not need be. Perhaps I should consider a 1995 240sx (I did find a '95 that I like, but it's a rebuild...not sure what to do there)?

Any advice you can give is appreciated!

Personally, I would skip the '90... it's got the weaker of the two motors. The KA24E, which is a single overhead cam motor. It's like 140-145hp.

Search for a '91-94 240sx. They come with the same motor that the '95+ years have, the KA24DE is the dual overhead motor and makes like 150-155hp.

But other than that... they're pretty reliable motors from what I've gathered. It's a truck motor so its pretty torquey and durable.

Re: Newbie with questions about getting a 240sx

just because the motor was used in a truck does not make it a "truck motor." I'm going to put a Corvette LS6 engine in a tractor and from then on that LS6 engine will be known as a "tractor motor."

Re: Newbie with questions about getting a 240sx

Nissan isn't going to create a whole new motor just to put in trucks/suvs/vans etc. So therefore since it is in a truck, don't just automatically call it a truck engine. Call it an engine with enough power and torque to haul ass in a truck.

Considering that truck will be carrying heavy loads, and that the truck itself is NOT lightweight. Then put it in a sports car, think of the power that bad mother's gonna have.
And a 240 is born...
