Hi all.Newbie with questions.95 se

I have a 1995 grand prix se 4dr 3.1 and it started acting up this week.It will throw an ses light when driven on the highway at around 210 degrees .And will start to shudder at idle at stop lights to the point where it feels like it will stall. After it cools it runs fine until it gets around the 200-210. All the vac lines seem good. And how can I scan for codes..Thanks in advace for any info..

Re: Hi all.Newbie with questions.95 se

autozone does free code readings, from there they may or may not be able to tell you what to do but there are a number of places online to check for engine codes with a little more info like:

Re: Hi all.Newbie with questions.95 se

The symptons you are mentioning looks like the car is overheating. I got a 94 SE and when overheated will behave just like that and the dash/ECM reading would read less or around 210 when in reallity with the heat gun it was around 240. Check your low level coolant sensor, your coolant temp sensor and that the cooling system is not clogged. Of course get the codes but never would hurt to make sure that your cooling system is on tip top shape

Ok this morning I changed out the TPS and the thermostat and it still has the problem. I can't find the fan relays .Only one fan turns on when the ac is on.Also now I noticed that when I give it a fair amount of gas the motor seems to cut out.It never did this before WTF. Does anyone know where the fan relays are for a 1995 grand prix se 4dr 3.1 ?? I will buy a new fuel filter to see if that fixes the cutting out problem .Thanks in advance for any info.. The car runs great till it reaches about 210 degrees then the ses light comes on and the car starts to sputter and wants to stall out . If I let it cool for a while it's fine till it reaches 210.And now it wont throw any codes at all...Help please....

Ok I changed CTS fuel filter checked all hoses and vac lines .Car is running better but still overheats .I have to turn on ac for fans to kick on .Once fans kick in it drops temp and runs fine .But I am still looking for the fan turn on switch or relays..Anyone...??

I changed CTS .fuel filter.thermostat.waterpump.fan relays.and flushed the rad.And the motherf**er still over heats with the ac off.If I turn on the ac it will run between 200-220 but run ok.When I turn off the ac it gets hot quick and starts to run like shite .Could this be a bad head gasket?? It does not smoke or smell sweet so I can't believe that it would be that.Could the low coolant sensor cause all this nightmare??Is there any gm techs on board willing to help me please ?? I really need to get this car running right before the heat season starts or I will probably fry my motor..Thanks in advance for any info...

Re: Hi all.Newbie with questions.95 se

you could check your engine coolant temp sensor to see if its bad. if you can get at it all you need is an ohm meter and check the resistance between the two contacts:high resistance when the engine is cold:low resistance when the engine is at operating temp. if the resistance is high at opertating temp then the sensor is telling the pmc that the engine is cold when its actually hot. if the pcm thinks the engine is running cold then the pcm will advance the timing. this could explain the shuttering and stalling.

-----------So far I have changed The coolant temp sensor -throttle position sensor-thermostat-waterpump-pvc valve-fan relays--flushed radiator-cleaned the throttle body-and a new fuel filter..The car runs much better but still heats up and the fans will not come on at all without the ac working??????I checked all fuses and fusible links and they are all good.I tried an idle relearn by with a/c off. cold start .put in drive with e-brake and let it idle for 5 minutes. Then I shut car off for 10 seconds and started it and in ebrake put it in drive and let it idle for 5 minutes without touching the gas pedal..And it cleared it right up.Till it got hot and I had to turn on ac to get fans to kick on and cool it down???Would the a/c pressure switch cause this.???Thanks again..

-----No I am still trying to find this damn problem.I went to autozone and had no luck retreiving any codes.I bought a new ac pressure switch and it still heats up .But now it will run awesome around town but once I get on the highway the ses comes on and it starts again. Also I have been trying to find a lower temp t-stat but it seems noone makes em.I am going to spend the day trying to find out whats wrong I will let yous know what I find...Thanks . Also about a month ago a round black gas vent cannister thingy fell out of my car.Would this be the problem? I can't find where it goes to plug it back in..It is a softball sized black plastic thing with a hole for a rubber hose to go into it.I searched the whole undercarriage and cannot find where it fell from.I think its a vapor cannistor .Anyone here know what this is or where it goes on the car.I am so desperatly hoping that this is the cause of all this nightmare .But I can't plug it back in cause I don't know where it goes..Thanks

Re: Hi all.Newbie with questions.95 se

did you check the fans to see if they were still working? if not an easy way to check is with a pair of jumper wires, a couple of aligator clips and couple of t-pins, this is stuff you can pick up at radio shack. the wires from the fans(blk-negative)(lt blu &wht-positive) should be conected using the jumper wires to the battery. if the fans don't work than they're no good. the fan that might be giving you trouble would be the one with blk/wht wire.

Re: Hi all.Newbie with questions.95 se

the only thing that hasn't been changed would be the pcm this what a/c and the fans have in common, but you could change the rad cap and make sure the rad is good, run your finger along the vanes to see if they're not rotten.
