Re: what's double clutching?

Ok, I want you to go around to every single person who told you that and give them a swift kick in the nuts for me. Then you can do with them as you like.

Double clutching is used on either cars with no synchros, cars with bad synchros, or cars where the owner wants to save the synchros. It's also used for DOWNSHIFTING which no one seems to understand. I swear that shitty movie is corrupting every single person who watches it. Double clutching cannot be used for upshifting like in a drag, what you do is push in the clutch, shift to N, let out the clutch, rev-match for your next gear, push in the clutch, shift into the gear, release the clutch. It's like normal rev-matching with one extra step. In normal rev-matching you speed up the engine to get ready for the downshift, but the transmission is still spinning the same speed as it was. Then the synchros have to work overtime to line up the gears so they mesh together properly and don't grind. When you double-clutch you speed up the engine and the transmission to the new speed, so when you shift into gear the synchros barely have to do anything to line up the gears.

Actually if you do it right you don't even need to use the clutch to go into gear, but I wouldn't try that until you've been driving a manual for several years and have perfected it.

Re: what's double clutching?

It doesn't matter what he meant by granny shifting, it was a movie and ATLEAST 90% of everything said in that movie is completely and utterly wrong. Please forget about anything even mentioned in that movie because it will just confuse you about how things really work.

And yes you can shift without a clutch, you just have to get the timing perfect. If you don't do it right you will grind, hurting your tranny and murdering your synchros. That's why I said you shouldn't even try it unless you've been driving for many years and have everything perfect.

Re: what's double clutching?

in the move they just throw out some catchy phases like double cluth and granny shifting

also shifting without the clutch is often refered to as floating gears

Re: what's double clutching?

yeah, I would never shift clutchlessly while racing. It would grind big time. But it's pretty easy to do when driving normally. Just press the stick gently towards the gear you want to get into and when the rpms drop into the right area after an upshift, the stick will slide right into gear.
